Can't believe we're back. | Papatowai, New Zealand

My wife and I are back in the CATLINS of New Zealand, one of the first places we visited in New Zealand almost 3 years ago.

This is the first stop of our South Island road trip, and our first stop since leaving Queenstown where we had been living/working for the past 9 months.

Now we've arrived, this is what we came for... Papatowai DOC Camp | Catlins

Papatowai was one of our favourite spots to hit in the South Island. Beautiful Camp ground with lovely sites and close to a lot of great places for exploring. Including Mc lean falls Cathedral caves, and a little remote beach we got exclusive access to, thanks to a friendly farmer we talked to.
If your into diving and Paua, we found a great spot for that, but don't tell to many people, so if we get back there next summer there is still plenty there...

Papatowai Beach - Catlins

A very short clip from a tour of the Catlins trails

New Zealand Road Trip: Southern Scenic Route - Waterfalls & Wildlife ... Papatowai to Surat Bay

Southern Scenic Route from Papatowai to Surat Bay – short walks to see Matai Falls & Purakaunui Falls + a beach walk at Surat Bay where several New Zealand Fur Seals were basking in the sun.
Again, the roads on this section were mostly sealed & almost traffic free ... definitely roads less travelled which adds to the appeal of the area.
I only had three days available to drive from Manapouri to Kaka Point, but in hindsight should have allowed a few more, in order to take in all of the side trips & walks.
Look for other highlights of this journey on the Southern Scenic Route:
Manapouri to Clifden
Tuatapere to Riverton & Bluff
Invercargill to Waipapa Point
Slope Point & Curio Bay
Owaka to Kaka Beach & Nugget Point

The Catlins are STUNNING! - Exploring the Catlins (Part 1)

The Catlins, a spectacular stretch of coast in New Zealand's South Island. Located between Balclutha and Invercargill it's rugged, untouched & beautiful. Stunning native forests, deserted sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, huge caves, loads of wildlife, and even the chance to swim with Dolphins. It should be on everyone's bucket list

Cathedral Cave

The Cathedral Caves are one of the thirty longest sea caves in the world, located on Waipati Beach, 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south of Papatowai, on the Catlins Coast in the southeast corner of the South Island, New Zealand. They are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area, along with the McLean Falls, the highest water falls in the Catlins, located 4.9 kilometres (3.0 mi) away. The two main cave systems join together within the cliff and one has a 30 metres (98 ft) high ceiling. Often blue penguins and fur seals will emerge from the gloom at the far end of the cave.
The 199m-long cave is formed in Jurassic sandstone (about 160 million years old) of the Murihiku terrane, though the cave itself is much younger, ten to hundreds of thousands of years old.

The caves are only accessible two hours either side of low tide. Access to the caves from the road (Chaslands Highway) crosses private land, with a small user fee(10NZD pp) being charged to help maintain the road.(wikipedia)

What Exactly is THE SHUTE? Catlins, New Zealand HIDDEN Adventure

While researching our road trip through the Catlins, we stumbled across something labeled The Shute on a topo map. There was no trail to get there, but we figured we'd have an adventure and go see what The Shute was all about. It turned out to be one of the best hidden gems in the enitre area. The Catlins Forest Park is in the Southern most part of the south island of New Zealand. This region is considered to be one of New Zealand's best rarely traveled areas. There's tons of beautiful waterfalls surrounded by lush rainforest as well as an awe inspiring, rugged coastline full of adventure.

Something Not To Be Missed When Heading To New Zealand

#travel #newzealand #travelvlog
The Lost Gypsy gallery is located in the Catlins New Zealand. It hosts a gathering of wacky experiments and crazy inventions, all arranged in an old school bus.
Artist Blair Somerville has dedicated the last 24 years creating these masterpieces of engineering combined with science. It's an awesome morning or afternoon out with loads to see and do!

Text taken from their website @ The Lost Gypsy:

Blair Somerville made his first automata more than 20 years ago. He was cleaning out a Pūpū Karikawa (Cooks Turban Shell) when it made a curious little sound.

What will happen if I turn it? he wondered. A little wire here, a twist of the pliers there plus a few choice words and voilà! The infamous gurgler was born.

We found this to be so true on our visit as we discovered multiple small hand crafted pieces which lure you to touch, press, turn & watch…usually with an unexpected outcome. Brilliant!

Coffee & cake is available for purchase, we didn't but all looked amazing!

If you should find yourself on a road trip of the South Island of New Zealand between Dunedin and Bluff then make sure this is on your list of places to visit!

Great Start to the Catlins - full time family adventures.

Catlins adventures part 1...
This week we start off at Kaka point which is the road into the nugget point light house. Far less remote or isolated than I thought it would be and tar sealed all the way through.
We were really impressed by the massive rocks in the water, was stunning to see it on such a beautiful day, and then to be rewarded with the Amazing Aurora that followed that night.
After a few nights at Kaka point enjoying the beach and sea lions, we headed off towards Owaka to dump the tanks and refill with water.
We then took a change of plan and went into the Hinahina harbour on the Catlins river and spent a night at the Yachting club there... It was a beautiful spot, interestingly, it was windier here than it was at the beach.
I had watched a couple of videos on youtube of people diving at Jacks point, looked like there was plenty in the water from what I saw online. But there in person it was pretty empty of sea life. I am a little scared to get into water to deep, i'm a bit of a novice so maybe deeper would have presented more food.
Catlins has started off to a really great adventure and we were really enjoying the natural beauty it had to offer.

We've reached the END!!! Ship Graveyard | Best Pies

Hey everyone a bit of a low key episode this week... After a couple of big weeks in the Catlins we are back in town, in Invercargill... Some wet weather, but we enjoy some pies, and checking out a few spots in Bluff.

NEW ZEALAND : SOUTH ISLAND : EAST COAST!

Earlier this year I travelled to New Zealand. So if your interested in going or want to travel there here's some advice on where to go on the East coast to Queenstown...

*** Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE ***

Places I visited:
-Nugget Point (Beautiful light house that overlooks the two seas meeting)
-Shotover River/Canyon (To see this Canyon go to : Shotover Jet: (speedboat) : Amazing jet boat ride and got to see some of the places they filmed Lord of the rings. The bus journey in is scary if you don't like heights however overall experience is worth it.
-Timaru - the lighthouse is beautiful but I didn't see any penguins :(
-Papatowai - I cant remember if the beach is Papatowai specifically but its definitely near by.
-Devils staircase
-Christchurch : brilliant food!
-Purakaunui Falls : was just beautiful
-Moeraki Boulders : are the strange boulders on the beach
-Queenstown : the adrenaline capital of the world.

We picked up the hired campervan & drove to Kaikoura where we went whale watching and saw a sperm whale. We then drove further along the Pacific coast and out to the extinct volcanos that form the Banks peninsula to beautiful Akaroa .Then on over Arthers Pass (stopping at Castle hill) to Hokitika where we had a gorgeous sunset. From Hokitika we went on to Franz Josef glacier and walked the trail to the glacier .From Franz Josef we went to lake Matheson taking in the circular walk around the lake great views. Then on along the coast via Bruce Bay(good stop for a coffee from the mobile cafe) and on to Haast turning inland up the Haast river & Gorge, some great views all along the river with lots of waterfalls to stop at.We took in the Thunder Creek Falls & Fantail Falls .

After Arrowtown we drove to Queenstown and along lake Wakatipu to Glenorchy then back to Queenstown and south along the other arm of Lake Wakatipu to Kingston had planned to go to Milford Sound from here but due to the road being washed away due to storms(and people stranded) our plans had to change so we switched our itinerary & drove south to the Catlins , stopping at Surat Bay then on to the Matai Falls & the McLean Falls , passing by Curio Bay and walking out to Slope Point the most southerly point of mainland South Island next and west along the coast to Riverton, stopping at Colac Bay & Gemstone Beach then on to Te Anau road to Milford Sound was now open for organised Coach convoys(we booked for the 2nd day it was open), a great day with good weather for Milford te Anau we headed for Twizel via Queenstown & where there are dark skies for star gazing. From Twizel we continued on to Mount Cook where we walked to Kea Point(a short walk) and the longer 11km Hooker Valley Track to the glacier lake below Mount Cook
Leaving Mount Cook passing lake Tekapo we again crossed Arthurs Pass to Greymouth this time. Then north up the coast, stopping at Pancake Rocks and then into the Buller Gorge stopping overnight in Murchison. The next day we drove on to Motueka staying for a couple of nights and walked along the coast by the sandspit.Following this we drove over Takaka Hill (up to 10 min wait in the traffic lights) where there is lots of road slippage, to Pohara on Golden Bay.We walked a track to Wainui falls and also visited Labrynth Rocks.Back over Takaka Hill to Marahau on the edge of Abel Tasman National Park to walk some of the Abel Tasman Coast Track and also a trip to Split Apple Rock.Leaving Marahou we had our first rainy day heading for Havelock,we stopped at Pelorus Bridge where we had on a previous trip canoed the river. The next day we drove the scenic route along the coast to Picton & on to the Ferry for North Island. The Catlins - Part Two

This is Part Two in our journey to explore The Catlins.  We want to do justice to this amazing area of New Zealand.  The trick is to 'rush it slowly' and peel back the layers. Check out our Part One video.

We departed Niagara after a two-night stay and headed towards our next destination - Papatowai.

The tiny settlement (only about 30 permanent residents) is only around a 35km drive from Niagara.

Papatowai, meaning 'where the forest meets the sea', is located close to the mouth of the Tahakopa River.

This was to be our basecamp whilst exploring:
McLeans Falls
Purakanui Falls
Tautuku Beach
Tautuku Estuary Walk
Tautuku Sawmill
Matai/Horseshoe Falls
Catlins River Branch Railway Line

Dolphins @Curio Bay | Petrified Forest | Slope Point - Full time family travel

Hey everyone in this video we finish the bottom of the Catlins, with an epic swim with Dolphins, and check out the last of the Catlins. We thought we'd spend about 10 min at the Petrified forest, but there was actually a lot to see and explore here which we really enjoyed.

Slope point. Not a lot here, but hey it's the bottom of Mainland New Zealand which is cool to tick off the list.
