Adventures: The Ohio Statehouse & Capitol Square

Located in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio, is the impressive Ohio Statehouse. This massive Greek Revival structure has been a prominent feature of Capital Square since its completion in 1861. As the seat of government for the state of Ohio, the Statehouse holds both the Ohio Senate as well as the House of Representatives. A detailed restoration and renovation in the 1990s brought major updates to the building. Today, you can explore much of this fascinating structure which holds an extensive museum, gift shop, and cafe. The statehouse also has underground parking which makes Capital Square a great place to start your downtown visit. TINY creek is full of MONSTER trout - a creek this small should not have this many BIG fish! p18

In part 18 of the 9-week truck bed camping road trip, I'm fly fishing a tiny creek that is full of big native cutthroat trout...some of which rival those found in the biggest rivers out west...which is super impressive considering this creek is tiny. The last fish of the day was a monster for this class of stream...watch closely to see the other freaks in that pool. Be sure to check out the teaser at the end for part 19/day 2 on this stream without a doubt it's the best small stream or creek I've ever fished. This fishery is amazing...lots of big native westslope cutthroat trout in a beautiful small stream, wilderness setting!

I started my 9 week off-the-grid, road trip on July 31, 2022, and spent roughly 3 weeks in WY, ID and MT returning home mid-October. I'll be sharing one video/week until the series is complete. Check out all the videos from this trip in the playlist linked below:

Adventures in Johnson County, KY! (Paintsville, KY) Episode 8!

Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Explore Appalachia!

We started the morning off at Paintsville Coffee House, where we got a little inside scoop on how they make their most popular drink with Lena. Here we caught up with Judy Daniel aka our Paintsville guru, who was our host and guide for the day.

Second on the agenda, Cassidy, Natalie, Kevin, and Sydney decided to break from the group to go tour the old Methodist church a few blocks down the street and get the inside scoop on the history of the building. They ran into Judge Executive Mark in town on the way! After an inside tour and even a trip up to the tower (if you were downtown that day and heard bells ringing…yes, that was us), Kevin and the gals headed back to the coffee shop to meet up with James, Josh, and Kaitlyn, who had continued chatting with the coffee shop crew.

Fueled by caffeine, it was time to start biking! We were able to borrow some bikes to use on the Dawkins Line Rail Trail, which is an old rail trail, originally used for moving lumber, that has been converted into a recreational trail used for walking, running, biking, and horseback riding. We rode for a few miles, the trail was beautiful. Well taken care of and surrounded by the KY landscape, biking on the Dawkins was a perfect fall adventure for us.

For lunch, we headed to Smokin’ Butts BBQ per Judy’s recommendation. The restaurant is on a golf course, so we got a stunning view overlooking the green and the mountains. We tried almost every entree on the menu, from pulled pork tacos to the brisket platter, and everything was fantastic, leaving us with full bellies for the rest of the afternoon. Time head out and explore by land and by sea (lake)!

Kevin, Kaitlyn, Natalie, and Sydney picking up some kayaks from Laura to paddle the lake, and Josh, Cassidy, and James went to check out the infamous Edible Trail.

The Edible Trail is a part of the Paintsville Lake Activity, Nature and Edible Trail (P.L.A.N.E.T.) - Outdoor Classroom. Once we arrived, we met Zac, Becky, and their golden retriever, Abraham Lincoln. They were excellent guides. The trail normally features a variety of edible fruit. We missed out on a lot of the fruit because of the time of year we visited, but there were still some persimmons and berries hangin' in there! Abraham Lincoln led us to the end of the peninsula where we stood atop an incredible lookout. We had a panoramic view of the water surrounded by cliffs. The Edible Trail definitely earns the Explore Appalachia stamp of approval.

Meanwhile, the other crew out at the lake split up into a canoe and two kayaks. The goal was to paddle out to this little island and see if we could catch any fish. The island was covered with lots of unique vegetation and rocks. Unfortunately, it was insanely windy, which made fishing very difficult. But, it’s like Kaitlyn always says, “it’s calling fishing, not catching.” After a little more exploring, we headed back to shore, with Sydney and Natalie winning the race home. After we dropped the canoe and kayaks back off, it was time to join back up with the whole team and head over to the Griffith Family Farm.

The farm is like an idyllic playground for both kids and adults alike. Kevin and Natalie explored the farm with Chester and got to hear all about the Griffith story. While they were out exploring, Sydney and Cassidy made it their mission to taste test the sparkling coffee and find some candy for the road. The sun started to set, so after watching it go down during some quality conversation and storytelling with Chester, we hit the road to head back to Paintsville. It was dinner time.

We headed to The Alley on Main, a swanky restaurant and bar venue downtown. The place was packed and the atmosphere was lively! We headed inside and sat up on the second floor, with a perfect overlook view of the stage. Snacking on some appetizers like fried mac ’n cheese, loaded nachos, and flatbreads started off the meal strong. However, the burgers and Nashville hot chicken sandwiches really took the cake. Everyone enjoyed watching Senora May’s performance, which was just about as laid back and fun as anyone could dream of!

After the show ended, it was time to head back to home base and call it a night. We said goodbye to hosts and drove off into the sunset- er, moonlight.

Follow along as we continue to explore this region!

Findlay, Ohio

Findlay is a city in the county seat of Hancock County, Ohio. Findlay was founded in 1812 and incorporated as a city in 1887. Findlay was originally settled by Frenchman Jean Jacques Blanchard in 1769. Hancock County Courthouse was built in 1886-1888. Listed on the National Register of Historic places. A top of the court house stands John Hancock, below him sit the three figures, Law, Justice, and Mercy. Tours of the court house are available and can be scheduled by calling the Court House directly. Findlay's University, a private university in Ohio is consistently ranked as one of the best colleges in the Midwest. I liked Findlay there was a lot to see and do. I loved seeing the neighbor hood homes, such rich historical character, wonderful details. Details we no longer see in most homes today.

Painesville, Ohio

Painesville is a city in the county seat of Lake County, Ohio along the Grand River. Twenty seven miles Northeast of Cleveland, Ohio. The court house was designed by architect J. Milton Dyer and built in 1909. Statues of the Biblical Cain and Abel flank the stairway entering the court house. (I love the architect of these older court houses.)

Visiting Paine Falls Park - Painesville, Ohio

I revisited Paine Falls Park in Painesville, Ohio to see what beauty these falls had from my memories the last time I visited well over 10 years ago. Nice small park with overlooks to the falls area and some small walking areas but no hiking trails.

PARK HISTORY
Colonel Hendrick Paine, nephew of Edward Paine, founder of Painesville, moved his family from Parkman, Ohio, in 1818 to this little valley. It became known as “Paine’s Hollow.” Paine built a log cabin on the terrace on the north side of the valley.

With the planning and financial help of his son’s (Elazer A. Paine) father-in-law, Samuel Phelps, Paine carried out the industrial development of Paine’s Hollow. He first built a sawmill. In the years that followed, many other industries came to the Hollow. By 1840, valley businesses included an iron forge and furnace, a tannery, a shoemaker, a blacksmith shop and a wagon maker. An ashery was built to produce lye for soap and potash production. The area also included several houses and a school for local children.

By 1850, surrounding forests had been felled and prosperity began to decline. With the lumber supply gone and new technological advances, water power was no longer needed. The area fell to ruin and many of the settlers moved to neighboring cities. In 1974, the area was named Paine Falls and was dedicated as a park by Lake Metroparks.

2021 Lake County Fair (Painesville, OH)

County Fair season is back after a year absence and our first stop is the extremely sketchy and highly disappointing Lake County Fair in Painesville, Ohio. Marvel at the 5 adult rides (Swings, Rock-O-Plane, Musik Express, Slide, Ferris Wheel) and handful of kids rides from Kissel Amusements. Scan the midway for your favorite food trailers. And of course, enjoy the people watching. County Fairs bring out some interesting folks!
