Historic Highway 80 was a coast-to-coast highway that traveled over 8 states and 2,726 miles, from Savannah, Georgia in the east, to San Diego, California in the west. While not as popular today as its cousin to the north, Route 66, Route 80 was just as historically important, and by the 1950s was bringing more people into California than Route 66.
Highway 80 has long since been decommissioned in California, but most of the old road is still drivable and there is still plenty to see. From the Sonoran desert in the eastern part of the state, to the mountains of San Diego's east county, to downtown San Diego, Highway 80 in California is well worth the time to explore. In this video we are going to look at 15 places to visit on Historic Highway 80 in California.

Santa Maria California is one of the hidden gems of California's Central Coast. Just north of Santa Barbara and a few hours from Los Angeles and San Francisco, it's a great get-away for anyone trying to escape the city crowds. While in Santa Maria California, we got to do some amazing activities, we drove a dune buggy, UTV, on massive sand dunes, went wine tasting, ate some delicious barbecue, BBQ, and saw some epic beaches. During our time here we visited Naughty Oak Brewery, Riverbench winery, and Presqu'ile winery.
The Oceano Dunes is one of the few areas in California where you can drive on the beach which is one of the best California Attractions. With all the things to do in Santa Maria it is a great reason to visit California. Let us know if you find our travel guide helpful!

A Trip On California's Historic Highway S-2
County Highway S-2 travels from the deserts of Imperial and San Diego County to the mountains. A good portion of the highway travels along the same route that was used from 1700s to get into California's interior, and was one of the major routes to California during the gold rush of 1849.
The S-2 goes from Ocotillo in the south to Highway 79 near Warner Springs in the north, and travels through Anza Borrego State Park. Along the way there is beautiful scenery, historic stagecoach stations, ranches that hosted troops in the Mexican-American War, and a path through stone that was carved by hand. It is a great day trip and one of the best drives in San Diego County.
The S-2 follows a lot of the same path as the Southern Emigrant Trail, The Butterfield Overland Stage Coach, and the trail taken by General Stephen Watts Kearny and the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican American War.

Finding the Exact Center of California
Just north of Fresno on California State Route 99 is where the palm meets the pine, the symbolic point where Southern California and Northern California meet, but the geographic center of California is actually located miles away, just outside of the town of North Fork.
North Fork was once known as Brown's and was a lumber town for over a century until the mill closed in 1996. Now it is home to the Sierra Mono Museum and is the start of the Sierra Scenic Byway. And of course it is known for being in the center of California, as it proclaims on the sign as you enter town.
In this video we travel to North Fork and check out the center of California and find out what is there.

A Trip to the Oak Grove Stage Station - Built in 1858
Travel in the mid 1800s was slow, and getting mail to California took along time. With the transcontinental railroad still in the planning stages, in 1857 the US Post Office awarded a contract to John Butterfield to deliver mail between St. Louis, MO and San Francisco, CA. Thus the Butterfield Overland Mail was born.
Typical stage delivery of mail in those days took up to 52 days to go from San Antonio, TX to San Diego, CA, but the Butterfield Overland Mail was able to get from Missouri to San Francisco in 25 days. They did this by running the stagecoaches day and night, and taking a more Southern route to avoid the snow and high mountains.
Along the route around 170 stations were used, most are gone. In eastern San Diego County you can find the Oak Grove Stage Station still sitting there after all these years. This station was built for the Butterfield Overland Mail in 1858, and after the route shut down in 1861, it became a hospital for the Union Army's Camp Wright. Over the next 130 years it would play an important part in its community, serving as a tavern, hotel, a post office, and a general store.
In this video we travel to Oak Grove, CA on Highway 79 to visit the Oak Grove Stage Station, what is said to be the last remaining station in the west that was built for the Butterfield Overland Mail.

A Drive on Route 66 in Needles, California
For travelers coming from the east, Needles was the first town in California on Route 66. In addition to being an important Route 66 town, Needles is also an important railroad stop and the town is filled with historic buildings, classic neon, and history. In this video we drive down the Mother Road through the town and make stops at places like El Garces, Carty's Camp, the Sage Motel, the Needles Wagon, and more.

Looking for Abandoned Highway 395 in the San Dieguito River Park
US Highway 395 used to travel from downtown San Diego all the way to the Canadian border. The highway was decommissioned south of Hesperia, CA in the 1960s and the 395 in Southern California was bypassed or replaced by Interstate 15. Pieces of the old road still exist if you know where to look though.
We've looked at a few abandoned sections of Highway 395 in the past, but this section is unique, as a piece of the road has been repurposed as a hiking and biking trail in the San Dieguito River Park, allowing people to enjoy a bit of road that once carried thousands of motorists too and from San Diego.
In addition to the still remaining road, we check out the David Kreitzer Lake Hodges Bridge, the longest stress ribbon bridge in the world, and a meadow that Highway 395 once traveled through where we find some incredible highway history.

Searching for The Center of Utah
There are several places that lay claim to being the center of Utah, including the town of Mt Pleasant, which has a monument marking where the state's center is supposed to be. In 2008 a local Boy Scout set out to answer the question once and for all and determine where the geographic center of Utah is located.
In this video we explore Mt. Pleasant, UT and find its center of the state marker before heading off into Utah's foothills to find the states actual geographic center, which includes a series of progressively worse roads followed by a hike up a steep hill.

An Abandoned Bridge in the Desert - The McPhaul Suspension Bridge
Just outside of Yuma, Arizona, near the ghost town of Dome, lies the abandoned McPhaul Suspension Bridge. Built in 1929, four years before the Golden Gate Bridge, the McPhaul Bridge was Highway 95's crossing point of the Gila River until the 1960s.
The section of the highway that bridge is on has long since been bypassed, leaving the bridge all alone in the desert. Due to safety concerns the bridge is now closed to traffic as well as people. It sits there as a reminder of the road that once was.
The McPhaul Suspension Bridge is a rare suspension bridge in the American Southwest and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

Birthplace of a California Icon - Visiting the Site of the First In-N-Out Burger
In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder and their first restaurant opened a on October 22, 1948 at 4:15 pm on Francisquito Ave. in Baldwin Park, CA. The location of the very first restaurant is located where Interstate 10 now stands, but right next to the freeway is a replica of that first shop, allowing you to step back in time to 1948.
In-N-Out was the first drive through hamburger stand in California and the first drive through to use the two way speaker system that is used by almost all fast food drive throughs today. The replica is made to look like In-N-Out would have looked when it first opened, complete with a few items you would never find at a fast food restaurant today.
Across the freeway from the replica of the first In-N-Out is the chai's company store, where you can find In-N-Out merchandise you never would have known existed. And of course, an In-N-Out is there too, to grab a bite to eat.

Checking Out the Cucamonga Service Station on Route 66
The Cucamonga Service Station dates back over 100 years, and predates Route 66 by a decade. There was once 1000s of service stations like this throughout the country. The service station was built in 1915 and has somehow managed to survive till today, and is the last remaining building of its type on Route 66 in California.
While it hasn't been a working service station since the 1970s, visiting today is like stepping back in time. Beautifully restored to its days as a Richfield Oil Station, the building now hosts a museum. This is one of the coolest places to stop on Route 66 in the Inland Empire.
The station was declared a historic landmark by the city of Rancho Cucamonga in 2019 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Exploring the Marshal South Cabin Ruins in the Anza Borrego Desert
Marshal South was a writer and poet the became best known in the 1930s and 40s for he and his family's experiment in primitive lifestyle in the remote and unforgiving Anza Borrego desert. For nearly 17 years he called ghost mountain home in an attempt to leave the civilized world and live off what only the desert gave him.
Along with his wife Tanya and three children, South built a home on top of Ghost Mountain, far from any modern amenities. Just getting to the home took a mile long hike up the mountain, on a trail filed with cactus, snakes, and no relief from the desert sun.
In this video we travel down the three mile dirt road off Highway S-2 into the Anza Borrego State Park to hike to the top of ghost mountain and explore what is left of the home he called Yaquitepec. Along the way we talk about South's life and what ended his experiment in primitive living.

Finding the Hidden White Deer Monument in San Diego
Hidden in a corner on the top of a hill in San Diego's Presidio Park is a monument to one of the city's legends, the White Deer of Mission Hills. The deer lived in the park for about a decade in the 1960s and 1970s, and was beloved by the local residents. After the deer was accidently killed, a the deer was buried at the park (the first burial at the park since the 1860s) and a monument to the deer was created.
As a San Diego native I've heard stories about the deer since elementary school, so we decided to go look for the monument. The monument is tucked away in a corner, across the canyon from the park's main attraction, the Junipero Serra Museum. There are no signs or trails leading to the monument and it can't be seen from the parking area at Inspiration Point.
