Places to see in ( Olney - UK )

Places to see in ( Olney - UK )

Olney is a market town and civil parish in the Borough of Milton Keynes, South East England. It is also part of the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire, with a population of around 6,500 people. It lies on the River Great Ouse, very close to the borders with Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and equidistant from Northampton, Bedford and Milton Keynes. It has easy access to the M1 at Junction 14 (approximately seven miles) and fast train links to London from Milton Keynes Central or Bedford (each approximately twelve miles distant). It is a popular tourist destination, perhaps best known for the Olney Pancake Race and for the Olney Hymns by William Cowper and John Newton.

First mentioned as Ollanege (Olla's island) in 932, the town has a history as a lace-making centre. The place, later called Olnei was held in 1086 AD by Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances as its overlord, according to the Domesday Book. During the English Civil War, Olney was the site of the Battle of Olney Bridge.

In the late 18th century, William Cowper and John Newton collaborated here on what became known as the Olney Hymns. John Newton, author of the hymn Amazing Grace, was curate of Olney and is buried here. His guest was William Cowper (English poet and hymnodist (1731–1800)). The town has the Cowper and Newton Museum dedicated to them. The museum was adapted from Cowper's former residence, which was given to the town in 1905 by the publisher William Hill Collingridge (who had been born in the house). Newton was succeeded as curate in Olney by the biblical commentator Thomas Scott (1747–1821).

The hamlet of Olney Park Farm to the north of the town of Olney derives its name from a park established in 1374 by Ralph, Third Baron Bassett of Sapcote in Leicester. In 1861 it attained civil parish status, but was subsequently incorporated into an enlarged Olney civil parish around 1931. Olney formerly had its own railway station on the Bedford—Northampton line, but the line was closed in 1962.

The A509 road runs into the wide High Street bordered by historic town houses. The Market Place is the site of a general market on Thursdays and a farmers' market on the first Sunday each month. The vast majority of Olney shops are independents, attracting shoppers from further afield to find the galleries, antique, rug and furniture sellers, as well as boutiques for interior design, fashionable clothes and perfumery. There are restaurants, pubs, cafes and takeaways offering a wide variety of British and international food.

As Olney continues to expand, with new housing estates, a secondary-level satellite campus, Ousedale School has opened for pupils from year 7 to year 11. Olney Infants School is for reception to year 2 children and Olney Middle School takes the children up to year 6, at the age of 11. The route for an A509 by-pass may continue to be an issue for the residents of the town, as are the various wind farm sites proposed in the locality.

Providence, Rhode Island sucks! let me tell you why...

Rhode Island, a U.S. state in New England, is known for sandy shores and seaside Colonial towns. It's home to several large cities, including Newport, which is famed for sailing and Gilded Age mansions, such as The Breakers. Providence, its capital, is home to Brown University, green Roger Williams Park, landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, with the famed WaterFire art installation.

These lists are not intended to be used for making life changing decisions. They are just another look at the city. I present both good and bad points of view on this channel. I don’t just make videos that are negative. There are positive videos on the channel too, check them out. They are made from statistical sources made available by government agencies as well as first hand resident experiences. If you are happy living here, I am happy for you. Olney Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around 10 miles southeast of Northampton, is the town of Olney.

Geographically, Olney is situated along the River Great Ouse, and at the far north of Buckinghamshire, making it the northernmost town in the region of South East England.

At the southern edge of the town centre is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. This dates all the way back to the early 14th century, and is Grade I listed. The church would later become famous for its association with the hymn Amazing Grace (more on that later).

In 1445 a local housewife was making pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. When she heard the Shriving Bell signifying the start of the church service, she ran to the church whilst holding her frying pan, tossing the pancake along the way in order for it not to burn in the residual heat. This marked the beginning of an annual tradition observed to the present day, namely the Olney Pancake Race. Every Shrove Tuesday, local women race on foot through the town centre, each with a pancake in a frying pan. The race takes place across a 400-yard route from the market place to the church. The traditional prize is a kiss from the verger.

In 1643 the Battle of Olney Bridge took place during the English Civil War. The Royalists, led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine, held Northampton for King Charles I and marched south to Olney. They were met by the Parliamentarians at the River Great Ouse and a skirmish took place, resulting in a tactical retreat from the Royalists.

In 1764 John Newton was ordained as a priest, and began preaching at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. It was here that Newton collaborated with poet William Cowper on a volume of hymns. The Olney Hymns, as they became known, were published in 1779, and included Amazing Grace. This was based on Newton's personal experience as a former sailor in the Royal Navy where he had witnessed the horrors of slavery first-hand. This included a stint as a slave himself. Newton would later team up with William Wilberforce on a 20-year-long campaign to end the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Amazing Grace consequently became strongly associated with the Abolitionist movement, and in 1835 it was set to a tune known as New Britain, helping it to become one of the most iconic hymns in the world today.

In 1872 a railway station opened in Olney. This formed part of the Bedford–Northampton line and the Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction Railway. The station closed to passengers in 1962, and to goods in 1964. Today, public transport to Olney consists of direct buses from Northampton, Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell and various other nearby settlements.

In 1978 Dan Wheldon was born in the village of Emberton, located one mile south of Olney. Wheldon became a professional motor racing driver, with career highlights including two Indianapolis 500 titles. In 2011 a huge crash involving 15 cars occurred at the IndyCar World Championship. The sole fatality was that of Wheldon, who was 33 years old.

Olney walk | Buckinghamshire | English Village Walks

Join me Paul, walking around the lovely Market town of Olney in Buckinghamshire, England.

A quiet market town and a short drive from the heart of Milton Keynes, was once a centre of lace-making and more recently the boot and shoe industry. It is a thriving, bustling community with plenty to offer visitors and best known for its annual Pancake Race established 1445.

Olney’s wide High Street (one of the widest in England) offers a mix of restaurants and pubs and an interesting collection of delightful shops. It invites you to explore the side alleys to discover more shops and walkways without taking you away from the main town. The weekly market on Thursday and local Farmers’ Market on the first Sunday of the month add a buzz to the activities of the town. Free parking throughout and easy access from the M1 make Olney a great place to visit.

Olney, on the river Ouse, hosts raft and duck races in early July with family entertainment and good old fashioned rivalry and fun. The firework display in November is spectacular and provides easy parking and access to the event.

Dickens of a Christmas, now an established event, takes place on either the first or second Sunday in December. The whole town comes to life with a traditional Victorian Christmas market with live entertainment and Father Christmas.

12 Smallest Prisons in the UK

When it comes to prison size in the United Kingdom, it is important to know that they come in different capacities and functions. We have large prison facilities like HM Prison Wandsworth, and HM Prison Five wells. There are also small facilities designed to hold capacity less than. 500. And so in this piece, we tell you the 12 smallest prison facilities in the United Kingdom, stay tuned.

12. Foston Hall prison
Number 12 on the list of smallest prisons in the United Kingdom is the Foston Hall Prison. It is a closed-category prison meant for women and Young Offenders Institution. It is located in Foston village in Derbyshire, England. Like most other prisons it is a government-operated prison operated by the HM Prison Service. The prison opened in 1997. The facility and location in which the prison is located have a history dating back to the 16 and 17th centuries. The prison was built to accept both remanded inmates and those convicted. The accommodative unit of the prison is made of 5 wings. The prison also has an isolation center established after the emergence of covid-19. Overall, the prison can accommodate up to about 299 inmates at once.

11. Kirklevington Grange
Next on the list is the Kirklevington Grange. It is a Category D prison for men and the young offender’s institute. Its location is in the village of Kirklevington in North Yorkshire, England. The prison-like most other prisons in the UK is run by the government through the HM Prison Service
The prison was opened in 1965 as a mixed remand center and also a detention center. In 1992 it was converted into a prison. The prison is usually used to prepare inmates for their and thus prisoners at the terminal end of their sentencing are found in the prison. Accommodative spaces in the prison consist of mainly single rooms and the prison can hold up to 283 inmates at most.

10. Send Prison
Next on the list and high up in the list of smallest prisons in the United Mind is the Send Prison. It is a unique prison being that it is one of the closed-category female prisons in the United Kingdom. Located in the Extreme southern area of Ripley close to Surrey in England. The prison is a government-managed prison managed by the HM prison service. It was built in 1962 from a facility which was once used to isolate victims of smallpox. The facility was then converted into a prison. The prison facility has undergone numerous upgrades since then. The prison accommodative space consists of an 80-bed Resettlement Unit, a 40-bed Therapeutic Community, a 20-bed Progression Psychologically Informed Planned Environment (PIPE) and a 20-bed Preparation PIPE. In total, it can house 282 inmates.

9. Hatfield Prison
It used to be known as HMP & YOI Moorland Open. It is a Category D prison for Young Offenders. Its location is close to Hatfield Woodhouse in South Yorkshire, England. 8. Usk Prison
Yet again away from England and to number 8 is USK. It is a Category C prison built for men. The prison is government operated and it is operated by HM Prison Services. This particular prison is very unique because it is one of the oldest prisons in the United Kingdom. It was built in 1844. When it was first built, it was known as the House of Correction. 10 Cheapest towns to live in Texas

10 Cheapest towns to live in Texas

Welcome back everyone let’s talk about Texas and where the cheapest place to live might be. Texas has become a hot spot for inward migration for some years now. If you are one of the people thinking about calling a realtor and a moving company. Maybe this video will help you find your new home.
The cheap places in Texas are going to be out of the way small towns. You won't find Houston, Dallas, or Austin on the list. Enjoy

If you enjoy these videos I would love to hear about it. Most of these videos are made to help people who are thinking about relocating, looking for real estate, or just wanting to learn about the United States. We look at the best and worst cities, states, towns, and neighborhoods in the United States. But, most of the time focus on the negative side of locations. If you only want some happy positive information about a city, town, or state, I would suggest looking up local mortgage and real estate companies or maybe the locations website. They are trying to sell you something so it will be nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and a bunch of smoke up your skirt. They won't tell you about crime, poverty, bail bondsmen, or insurance you'll need because of natural disasters. I will. And I will try and make it entertaining.
