Khachkars in Noratus cemetery, medieval Armenian cemetery (Noraduz)

Noratus cemetery, also spelled Noraduz, (Armenian: Նորատուսի գերեզմանատուն) is a medieval cemetery with a large number of early khachkars located in the village of Noratus, Gegharkunik marz near Gavar and Lake Sevan, 90 km north of Yerevan.
The Noratus cemetery has the largest cluster of khachkars in the Republic of Armenia. It is currently the largest surviving cemetery with khachkars following the destruction of the khachkars in Old Julfa, Nakhichevan by the government of Azerbaijan.
The oldest khachkars in the Noratus cemetery date back to the late 10th century. During the revival of the khachkar tradition in the 16-17th centuries many khachkars were built under the yoke of the Safavid Empire when oriental influences seeped into Armenian art. Three master carvers from this period carved khachkars in Noraduz cementery, the most notable of whom was Kiram Kazmogh (1551-1610), his contemporaries were Arakel and Meliset. The Noratus cemetery is spread over a seven hectare field containing almost a thousand khachkars each of them depicting unique ornamentation. The majority of the khachkars are covered by moss and lichen. Several tombstones in Noratus cemetery depict carved scenes of weddings and farm life. Adjacent to the old Noratus cemetery a new modern cemetery has been built separated by a long fence. Nearby the cemetery in the village there is the Holy Virgin church built in the ninth century. One of the khachkars from the Noratus cemetery was donated to the British Museum in 1977 by Catholicos Vazgen I. The front face of the rectangular khachkar has a leaved-cross with two smaller crosses below that are framed with trefoil and bunches of grapes projecting from either side. An inscription on the left side seeks God's mercy for a certain Aputayli.
A popular folktale associated with the Noratus cemetery concerns the invading army of Tamerlane. According to one story the villagers placed helmets on top of the khachkars and leaned swords against them. From a distance the khachkars looked like armed soldiers holding a defensive position as a result of which Tamerlane’s army retreated.
In another popular story, the 19th-century monk named Ter Karapet Hovhanesi-Hovakimyan, from a monastery near the village, conducted burial services at Noraduz cementery; in order to avoid the two-hour round trip from the cemetery to the monastery he built himself a small cell in Noraduz cementery. When he was 90 years old, he asked his brother monks to bury him alive. His last words were: I do not fear death. I would like you to not be afraid also. Never fear anything, but God alone. Let anyone who has fear come to me. Pour water at the burial stone, drink the water, wash your face, chest, arms and legs. Then break the vessel that contained the water. Fear will then abandon you. To this day people come to the monk's grave to perform this ritual, leaving broken pieces of glass scattered all about.

Khatchkars of Noratus (Arménie/Armenia)

Exiting at a somewhat over-engineered cloverleaf intersection leads one toward Lake Sevan and the ancient village of Noratus or Noraduz (3534 v). Turning right at the first street past the bridge leads to the S edge of town and S. Grigor Lusavorich church/Daputs Monastery of the 9-10th c., rebuilt by the 11th c architect Khachatur. Continuing straight into the center of village, the second left leads to the ruined S. Astvatsatsin church, a basilica built by Prince Sahak at the end of the 9th c., probably on earlier foundations. Outside the W door are intriguing carved grave monuments. On the E edge of town is a huge medieval-modern cemetery with an impressive array of early khachkars* as well as evocative modern funerary statuary. Continuing up the bare, windswept hillside beyond, there is a smaller cluster of khachkars around a medieval funeral chapel. Two km E of Noratus on the top of a hill is the Heghi Dar cyclopean fortress with a large tomb and two big inhabited caves. On a promontory N of Noratus is a large, well-maintained forest of antenna masts, ostensibly belonging to Armentel. A couple of km S of Noradus, near the former village of Artsvakar (formerly Ghshlakh, now a suburb of Gavar), are the Early Iron Age cyclopean fortresses of Ghslakh (near the lake), Zhami Dar (just W of Artsvakar) and Mrtbi Dzor (S of Zhami Dar). VALPARD FILMS

First time in ARMENIA - this country will shock you! Հայաստան

Hi everyone! This is episode eight of my Caucasus series in which I travel through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. This is also the first of my Armenia videos in the series.

I did not know what to expect of Armenia. I had some questions at the border about my visit to Azerbaijan, and even though I did not visit the region of Nagorno-Karabakh (alternative spelling: Nagorno Karabakh; also called the Republic of Artsakh in Armenia), I was very aware of the situation.

In this video, I go on an organised tour called 'Essential Armenia'. The tour consists of various stops showing the absolute essential must see destinations in this country. Please note that I am not sponsored by any individual or company in this video or in the production thereof.

The tour starts with a visit to the Symphony of Stones, consisting of basalt columns that resemble a musical organ. The river provides the 'music', hence the name. During this stop, I talk about the challenges I faced after visiting Azerbaijan earlier in this series and the interest that border officials had regarding that visit.

The next stop is Geghard Monastery, located in the mountains which provides for quite a stunning setting. This is also testament to the importance of religion in Armenia - the oldest Christian country in the world.

After this, we also visit Garni Temple that was destroyed in a 17th century earthquake but reconstructed and also surrounded by incredible nature. The Armenian royal family used this area as a resort and there were also Roman baths - I briefly visit the remains of the latter.

We then head to the village of Noratus, passing the incredible Lake Sevan along the way. This lake is situated approximately 1.9 kilometres above sea level and is the lifeblood of the economy for many parts of Armenia. We then stop for lunch at an Armenian family's home where we eat, among other things, some delicious trout from Lake Sevan.

After lunch, we simply cross the street to our next stop, which is Noratus cemetery. Here I learn all about the cemetery and its many 'khachkars', as well as some interesting stories regarding some of the cross-stones and others graves.

The final stop on the tour is Sevanavank, a monastic complex overlooking Lake Sevan.

Hope you enjoy a taste of this fascinating country! A massive thanks to tour guide Christina who patiently answered all my questions :)

ARMENIA - Lake Sevan, Noratus, Hayravank, Sevanavank

Lake Sevan (Armenian: Սևանա լիճ Sevana lič) is the largest lake in Armenia and the Caucasus region. It is one of the largest freshwater high-altitude lakes in the world.
Lake Sevan is situated in the central part of the Republic of Armenia, in the Gegharkunik Province, at the altitude of 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. The total surface area of its basin is about 5,000 km2 (1,900 sq mi), the lake itself is 940 km2, and the volume is 34.0 billion m3. It is fed by 28 rivers and streams. Only 10% of the outgoing water is drained by the Hrazdan (Razdan) river, while the remaining 90% evaporates.
Before human intervention dramatically changed the Lake Sevan ecosystem, the lake was 95 m (312 ft) deep, covered an area of 1,360 km² (5% of Armenia's entire area), had a volume of 58 km³ and had a perimeter of 260 km. The lake surface was at an altitude of 1,916 m above sea level.
Along with Lake Van and Lake Urmia, Sevan was considered one of the three great lakes of the historical Armenian Kingdom, collectively referred to as the 'Seas of Armenia'; it is the only one within the boundaries of today's Republic of Armenia. The Sevan peninsula (formerly an island) is home to a medieval monastery.

Hayravank (Armenian: Հայրավանք) is a 9th-12th century Armenian monastery located just northeast of the village of Hayravank along the southwest shores of Lake Sevan in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia. The monastic complex consists of a church, chapel, and gavit.

Sevanavank (Armenian: Սևանավանք; meaning Sevan Monastery) is a monastic complex located on a peninsula at the northwestern shore of Lake Sevan in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia, not far from the town of Sevan. Initially the monastery was built at the southern shore of a small island. After the artificial draining of Lake Sevan, which started in the era of Joseph Stalin, the water level fell about 20 metres, and the island transformed into a peninsula. At the southern shore of this newly created peninsula, a guesthouse of the Armenian Writers' Union was built. The eastern shore is occupied by the Armenian president's summer residence, while the monastery's still active seminary moved to newly constructed buildings at the northern shore of the peninsula.

Best Things to Do in ARMENIA - Part 2

Best Things to Do in ARMENIA - Part 2

In this Part 2 video, I'll introduce you to many more of the Highlights of ARMENIA. These are some of the best things to do in this former Soviet republic located in the Caucasus, including Dilijan, Vanadzor, Gyumri, Garni and more.

Have you been to Armenia? Would you like to go?

Episode 11 - Armenia - Alaverdi, Areni, Goris & Etchmiadzin / 365 days off - Travel around the world

ARMENIA: ALAVERDI, DILIJAN, ARENI, GORIS AND ETCHMIADZIN

Travelling on our own to all corners of Armenia was definitely a great experience. From a cultural point of view, we did stop 25 times to visit monasteries, churches and historical sites.

Our 3 favorites were:
Noravank, on a hill at the end of its canyon, it really had a Grand Canyon feel
Marmashen, at the bottom of a lushy green valley, a very peaceful atmosphere and a great site for a picnic.
The Noratus Cemetery, a field of Khachkars, close to Lake Sevan, strolling amongst the cross-stones and their unique carvings let us see one of Armenia’s identities.

From a human point of view, the last 10 days were absolutely fantastic! We met Olga, Irina & Stepan in Alaverdi, Davit and his sisters in Areni, Arthur, Sonna and their lovely children in Etchmiadzin. We had a great time with all of them including the best local and fresh meals we had so far.
If you are around instead of taking day tours from Yerevan, you really should rent a car to explore the country and spend time with people in the different provinces.

WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
The Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, we had a guided tour by Anna & Anoush, 2 young adults from the Alaverdi English Club (see Best Kept Secret Tip section for details).
Goshavank, another Monastery, we were welcomed by a young priest who saw us looking for frescoes and carvings described in the Bradt guide. Unfortunately he could only speak a few words of english but one of his friend was there and helped with the translation calling another friend on his mobile! The visit took quite some time and we were moved by the priest trying to pass on his passion for his church.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Iris B&B in Alaverdi, the best homestay in the Lori region. We even got interviewed by the Armenian TV during our stay. They were filming a documentary about the B&B in the country.
Areni Wine Art in Areni, Davit and his family are doing huge efforts to drag tourists in the village. They organize hiking trips, organic meals including traditional Armenian barbeque in the “tonir“, dancing and cooking lessons or anything you would request from them.
Artson B&B in Etchmiadzin, Arthur and Sonna’s goal is to make you feel at home and they’re pretty good at it! All the family is eager to exchange with you about the country, travelling and Armenian history. You may be lucky enough to attend a private concert given by their 2nd daughter, Hasmik, who is studying vocal art in College.

RESTAURANTS
As stated before do not even bother looking for restaurants while in homestays. All of them will gladly prepare you fresh local food at unbeatable fares.

BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
The English Club in Alaverdi, is a NGO trying to improve the economic situation teaching english to anyone interested in the village. They are really doing a great job and we liked very much spending some time with its members. They are arranging day hikes and several guided tours to the historical sites of the province. We enjoyed the guided tours at Sanahin and Haghpat very much. The young guides gave us insights about the local history that a common guide book would never tell. Do not hesitate to contact them when in the region to get your private guided tour!

To all the English Club Members, thank you so much for your warm welcome during our visit to the Club, keep up the good work and hope to come back soon!
