Walking and Camping The Hadrian's Wall Path | A Journey To Remember

The Hadrian's Wall National Trail is a walking route that runs Coast to Coast across the country along the length of Hadrian's mighty wall. You can camp the trail, stay in bunkhouses, or B&B's, depending on your chosen itinerary. In this film my friend Ann and I set out to travel the 86mile length of the trail, experiencing along the way just how harsh life on the wall would have been for the soldiers who operated here. It was an adventure to remember!

South Shields, November 2021. 4K DRONE FOOTAGE.

South Shields is a coastal town at the mouth of the River Tyne, about 3.7 miles (6.0 km) downstream from Newcastle upon Tyne in north east England. Historically part of County Durham, it became part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. According to the 2011 census, the town had a population of 76,498, the third largest in Tyneside after Newcastle and Gateshead. It is part of the metropolitan borough of South Tyneside which includes the towns of Jarrow and Hebburn. South Shields is represented in Parliament by Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck. The demonym of people from South Shields is either Geordie which is used for people from Tyneside or Sandancer which is the less colloquial term for people from South Shields.
HISTORY
The first evidence of a settlement within what is now the town of South Shields dates from pre-historic times. Stone Age arrow heads and an Iron Age round house have been discovered on the site of Arbeia Roman Fort. The Roman garrison built a fort here around AD 160 and expanded it around AD 208 to help supply their soldiers along Hadrian's Wall as they campaigned north beyond the Antonine Wall. Divisions living at the fort included Tigris bargemen (from Persia and modern day Iraq), infantry from Iberia and Gaul, and Syrian archers and spearmen. The fort was abandoned as the Roman Empire declined in the 4th century AD. Many ruins still exist today and some structures have been rebuilt as part of a modern museum and popular tourist attraction.

There is evidence that the site was used in the early post-Roman period as a British settlement. It is believed it became a royal residence of King Osric of Deira; records show that his son Oswin was born within 'Caer Urfa', by which name the fort is thought to be known after the Romans left. Furthermore, Bede records Oswin giving a parcel of land to St Hilda for the foundation of a monastery here in c.647; the present-day church of St Hilda, by the Market Place, is said to stand on the monastic site.

South Shields Town Hall, built at a time of industrial self-confidence
In the 9th century, Scandinavian peoples made Viking raids on monasteries and settlements all along the coast, and later conquered the Anglian Kingdoms of Northumbria, Mercia and East Anglia, who hailed from Angelnen in Denmark (modern day Germany). It is said in local folklore that a Viking ship was wrecked at Herd Sands in South Shields in its attempts to disembark at a cove nearby. Other Viking ships were uncovered in South Shields Denmark Centre and nearby Jarrow.

The current town was founded in 1245 and developed as a fishing port. The name South Shields developed from the 'Schele' or 'Shield', which was a small dwelling used by fishermen. Another industry that was introduced, was that of salt-panning, later expanded upon in the 15th century, polluting the air and surrounding land. In 1864, a Tyne Commissioners dredger brought up a nine-pounder breech-loading cannon; more cannonballs have been found in the sands beside the Lawe; these artifacts belonged to the English civil war. At the outbreak of the war in 1642, the North, West and Ireland supported the King; the South East and Presbyterian Scotland supported Parliament. In 1644 Parliament's Scottish Covenanter allies, in a lengthy battle, seized the town and its Royalist fortification, the fortification was close to the site of the original Roman fort. They also seized the town of Newburn. These raids were done to aid their ongoing siege of the heavily fortified Newcastle upon Tyne, and in a bid to control the River Tyne, and the North, and the Shields siege helped cause their battalions to maneuver south to York; this may have also led to a brief winter skirmish on the outskirts of Boldon, though the topography is not favourable for a battle.

OUSEBURN , NEWCASTLE by DRONE. FEBRUARY 2022

About The Ouseburn Valley
The Ouseburn Valley is many things to many people. Whether you enjoy the Ouseburn for its bustling alternative music scene, its flourishing creative networks, or its abundant local history and heritage, the Valley has something for everyone.

Over the last twenty years the Ouseburn Valley has undergone a dramatic transformation from post-industrial wasteland to Newcastle’s foremost cultural and creative quarter, helped in large part by a raft of investment and community-led regeneration.

Now thriving social and cultural venues exist harmoniously alongside reminders of the area’s industrial heritage, such as the Glasshouse Bridge (built in 1878), the old flax chimney outside the Cluny and the recently refurbished Ouseburn Railway viaduct.

It is this interaction between past and present that gives the area its energy and charm, and makes it such an exciting place to live, work or play.

The Ouseburn is a small river in Newcastle upon Tyne, England that flows through the city of Newcastle upon Tyne into the River Tyne. It gives its name to the Ouseburn Valley and the Ouseburn electoral ward for Newcastle City Council elections.

The Ouseburn has its source at Callerton in the north of the city near Newcastle Airport. It then flows through the Kingston Park area of the city, Newcastle Great Park, Gosforth Park and Whitebridge Park. The Ouseburn then continues through Paddy Freeman's Park in South Gosforth and into Jesmond Dene, Armstrong Park and Heaton Park, where it marks the boundary between Heaton and Sandyford. The river then flows through a culvert before re-emerging under Ouseburn railway viaduct, whence it flows past the City Farm, Seven Stories and the Toffee Factory and meets the River Tyne.

The river was previously tidal from the Viaduct, revealing dark mud at low tide. However, since 2009 a tidal barrage at the river mouth retains high water in the Ouseburn at low tide, with the objective of providing a more pleasant environment alongside its banks at low tide, thus promoting development. Despite the expense of its construction, the Ouseburn barrage has had operational problems and was left open for a length of time while they were corrected.

The lower Ouseburn Valley, whilst heavily industrialised in the past, serves as of 2013 as a hub for the arts and creative industries, and has a lively pub scene, noted for live music and real ale.

In Roman times the lower Ouseburn Valley was crossed by Hadrian's Wall, but there are now no visible traces to be seen. On the eastern side of the valley, at the eastern end of a new block of flats, there is an information board with an artist's impression of the Wall crossing the valley. This section of the Wall was the later extension from the Roman fort of Pons Aelius (Newcastle) to that of Segedunum (Wallsend). This newer section of the Wall was not backed by the Vallum ditch, because the River Tyne rendered it superfluous.

River Tyne from source to mouth

Impression of a journey along the River Tyne in North East England. This video production is part of the online magazine Travelling along Rivers (

Hadrian's Wall Path, England, 2021

A self-guided walk from Wallsend, Newcastle on the east coast following the course of Hadrian’s Wall to finish on the west coast at Bowness-on-Solway. It crosses the counties of Cumbria, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. Along the wall are remains of milecastles, with two turrets or watch towers between each and occasional forts. The ends follow the rivers Tyne and Eden with many old and new bridges. Between it follows ridges and crags with views of the countryside. 17 - 24/09/21

When animals in a cage pace back and forth from one side to the other, it may be a sign they are unhappy with their captivity.
My last trek was the Coast to Coast Walk from the west coast to east of England. Now I’ve just done the Hadrian’s Wall Path from the east coast back to the west. Is that the same thing?
I want to trek in the Himalayas again!
But for now, I can at least trek somewhere…

Technical note:
Sorry about the piece of dust on the camera sensor that is visible in many of the shots. I noticed it early on the first day of walking, but I had no way to clean it off during the walk. To try to minimise this being visible, most of the video is shot below f9 using higher shutter speeds than normal for video to adjust the exposure (on minimum ISO). Rest assured that I did clean the sensor on getting home and the blob is now gone for future recordings.
