Eastleigh is a town near Southampton on the South coast of England, 70 miles from London. Famous for the Spitfire airplane which first flew from Eastleigh airport on 5th March 1936, and comedian Benny Hill. A Saxon village called East Leah had existed since 932AD. The Domesday Book of 1086 refers to the settlement as Estleie. Eastleigh covers a wide area right down to the coast at Hamble-le-Rice and Netley.

An afternoon 4K walk in Netley & Weston in England.
The village of Netley, near the city’s outskirts, is home to Netley Abbey, a ruined 13th-century monastery and church. In the Royal Victoria Country Park, with rolling lawns and woods set beside Southampton Water estuary, a chapel is all that remains of a huge military hospital. Victoria Road has quaint cottages and estuary views, and walking paths run along the shore and through nearby countryside.
Weston is a hamlet in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is in the civil parish of Buriton. It is 1.4 miles (2.3 km) southwest of Petersfield. It is a small suburb on the south-eastern side of Southampton, UK, predominantly built on the Weston Grove Estate formerly owned by the Chamberlayne family. It also includes the area that was previously the Barnfield Estate. Weston includes part of Mayfield Park, which was previously the Mayfield Estate. Weston is bounded by Woolston, Sholing, Netley and Southampton Water.

Netley Castle
Netley Castle is a former artillery fort constructed in either 1544 by Henry VIII in the village of Netley in Hampshire. The castle included a central stone keep with two flanking gun platforms and was garrisoned by ten men.
A property developer purchased Netley Castle in 2000 and converted it into nine private residential flats, at a cost of £1.7 million, during which process an archaeological survey was made of the property. It is protected under UK law as a Scheduled Monumentand a Grade II* listed building.
The castle is now approximately 62 by 14 metres (203 by 46 ft) across and 13.5 metres (44 ft) tall, surrounded by 1.54 hectares (3.8 acres) of land.

Southampton is a port city on England’s south coast. It’s home to the SeaCity Museum, with an interactive model of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specialises in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike.
Southampton on the south coast of England, is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire. Southampton is 75 miles (121 km) south-west of London and 19 miles (31 km) north-west of Portsmouth. Southampton is a major port and the closest city to the New Forest. Southampton lies at the northernmost point of Southampton Water at the confluence of the Rivers Test and Itchen, with the River Hamble joining to the south of the urban area.
Significant employers in the city include the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University, Southampton Airport, Ordnance Survey, BBC South, the NHS, ABP and Carnival UK. Southampton is noted for its association with the RMS Titanic, the Spitfire and more generally in the World War II narrative as one of the departure points for D-Day, and more recently as the home port of a number of the largest cruise ships in the world. Southampton has a large shopping centre and retail park, Westquay. In 2014, the city council approved a follow-up from the Westquay park, WestQuay Watermark (now known as Westquay South) and construction began in January 2015.
The geography of Southampton is influenced by the sea and rivers. The city lies at the northern tip of the Southampton Water, a deep water estuary. Southampton is home to Southampton Football Club—nicknamed The Saints—the club plays in the Premier League at St Mary's Stadium .
Southampton is a major UK port which has good transport links with the rest of the country. Southampton is also served by the rail network, which is used both by freight services to and from the docks and passenger services as part of the national rail system. Southampton Airport is a regional airport located in the town of Eastleigh, just north of the city. Cunard ships are regularly launched in the city, for example Queen Victoria was named by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall in December 2007, and the Queen named Queen Elizabeth in the city during October 2011. The Duchess of Cambridge performed the naming ceremony of Royal Princess on 13 June 2013. While Southampton is no longer the base for any cross-channel ferries.

The Royal Victoria Hospital or Netley Hospital was a large military hospital in Netley, near Southampton, Hampshire, England. Construction started in 1856 at the suggestion of Queen Victoria but its design caused some controversy, chiefly from Florence Nightingale.

Netley Abbey Ruins
The Abbey, from which the village got its name, is the most complete Cistercian monastery in Southern England. It originated when a colony of monks of the Cistercian Order crossed Southampton Water from Beaulieu to establish a new religious house at Netley in 1239.
Founded by Peter des Roche, Bishop of Winchester, and officially named St.Mary of Edwardsto ( Sanctae Mariae de Loco Sancti Edwardi), the Abbey was under the patronage of Henry 111, whose name appears on the foundation stone at the base of the north east crossing tower. It was probably built by the King's Mason, who also constructed Westminster Abbey.
Monastic life continued for three centuries at the Abbey, until its dissolution by Henry V111 in 1536.
Henry V111 granted the site of the Abbey to William Paulet, who converted it into a private residence destroying a lot of the original Abbey structure in the process.
Around 1700 a new owner, William Seymour, second Earl of Hertford, demolished and sold a lot of the stone fabric of the Abbey as building material, leaving the ruin we have today. Some of this stone was used to re-build St. Mary's Church in Southampton.

Shirley is a broad district and a former village on the western side of Southampton, England. Shirley's main roles are retailing and residential. It is the most important suburban shopping area in the west of the city. Housing is a mixture of council houses in the centre of the district surrounded by private housing, with larger suburban houses concentrated in Upper Shirley. Shirley is separated from Highfield by Southampton Common, a large green public space.
