Ranikot Fort: The Great Wall of Sindh - Heritage Tourism in Pakistan [4K] Ultra HD

Ranikot Fort

Ranikot, often referred to as the ‘’Great Wall of Sindh,’’ stands as one of the world’s largest forts. Situated approximately 30 kilometres from Sann town in the Jamshoro district of Sindh, Pakistan, this colossal fort is a testament to historical grandeur.

The fortification wall encircling the majestic Rani Kot extends over a staggering 35 kilometres, linking together rugged hills. Though believed to have been constructed in the first quarter of the 19th century, the precise origins of this citadel are veiled in the passage of time. Following the natural contours of the hilly terrain, the fortification wall features robust semi-circular bastions placed at intervals. Encompassing three sides of the area, the northern side relies on the lofty peaks of higher hillocks for its defence.

Within this sprawling complex lies a smaller fortress known as Miri Kot Fort, situated approximately 5-6 kilometres inside the main gate, which is thought to have served as the royal residence for the ruling Mirs family. A double-door gate stands on the southern side of the fortress. Upon entering, two niches adorned with intricate floral designs and carved stones catch the eye. The entire architectural structure of the fort is crafted using stone and lime, showcasing an impressive display of craftsmanship.

Naukot Fort | Thar Desert Fort | Historical Fort In Sindh Pakistan

Naukot Fort is situated in Tharparkar District ( Thar Desert ) near Naukot City, Sindh, Pakistan. In this visit to historical places of Pakistan, we are visiting Naukot fort and tell how we reach to Naukot fort, who was the builder and view and visit different parts of Naukot fort.

Naukot Fort was built by Mir Karam Ali Khan Talpur, in 1814 CE . Naukot fort lies at the edge of the Thar Desert, so it is called Gateway to the Thar Desert.

There are two ways to reach to Naukot fort from Karachi . One from way from Motorway M-9 to Hyderabad, Mirpur khas to Naukot Fort is approximately 322 km taking 5 hours . Another way from Thatta Sujawal Badin road approx 290 Km taking 4hours and 45 minutes.

The fort is built of burnt-bricks in mud mortar and measures about 113m in length and 98m in width. The fort is guarded by nine semi-circular bastions; two at the main entrance, which are bigger, rest of the four at the corners and one of each in the middle of northern southern and western walls. A 4m wide wall runs on the four sides of the fort. It has two burnt-brick stairs to climb the wall top, from the interior of the fort .

The entrance to fort through two big bastions then passes through the main gate . This main gate open into a squarish courtyard . This squarish courtyard has small rooms , these rooms utilized by fort guards or soldiers . This squarish courtyard open into another arched type gate which has 7 meter height and 4 meter width .Through this gate we enter internal fort area. Beside this gate, on left and right side there are two stairways to reach the top.

Inside the fort there are rooms on left side, which is ammunition store (barood khana). One construction may be grain storage or a dungeon.

There is also a large courtyard which served as a royal court in the Talpur era, around which a number of rooms are scattered.

The Fort has been under the control of the Department of Culture of the Provincial Sindh Government. In July 2011, there was some damage due to heavy rains that eroded its mud walls. By the end of the rainy season, the outer wall and entrance gate completely collapsed. The Endowment Fund Trust for Preservation of the Heritage of Sindh (EFT), established by Government of Sindh in August 2008. the Endowment Fund Trust (EFT) was set up for the preservation of historical and cultural monuments in Sindh, and they especially focused on restoring the Fort. While most of the damage seen in 2011 has been repaired, EFT is still dealing with restoring some older sections of the Fort, such as the merlons and elephant-proof gates, and preventing water accumulation inside the fort walls

The weather in the Naukot Fort area is very intense, and the temperature is normally above 45C in summers , so the best time to visit this area is just after the annual rains during September, when parts of the desert become fertile and colorful. Naukot Fort becomes something of a tourist attraction after rain, as one can see a panoramic view of the rich and changing landscape of the Thar desert from its top. Tourists and families from nearby areas often visit Naukot during these cooler months.

Pakistan The Beautiful | Forts - Naukot Fort, Tharparkar

Pakistan The Beautiful | Going towards the end of town, the sight of Thar desert comes into view. Stuck in the rally of people, celebrating the release of Arbab Nazeer, nephew of ex-chief minister Sindh, Arbab Ghulam Rahim, we got late but, as my research said, right after entering the desert, within a few minutes the beautiful Naukot Fort comes into view. The Road leads to Mithi, & on the left goes a road to the fort which is a minute or two away from the main road. Very beautiful & the color of soil all over it, it is a small fort, with not much in it, except for the barracks & a few room, still it looks very beautiful. Here are the clips of the portions of fort which I captured. Because of not much experience, the footage's are not that good & not much in detail. Hope you'll like it.

Umarkot | Top Places | Tourist Guide |Sindh Pakistan

Originally known as Amarkot, the present town of Umerkot was the capital of medieval Sindh province, including some parts of present Rajasthan (Rajputana) state of India. This province was ruled by the Hindu Sodha family (one of the subclans of the Paramara Rajputs). It also became prominent during the time of the Mughals and during the British Raj. The Mughal king Akbar was born in Amarkot/Umerkot when his father Humayun fled from military defeat at the hands of the Pathan/Afghan warrior Sher Shah Suri. Rana Prasad, a Hindu Sodha Rajput ruler of Amarkot, gave refuge to Humayun. Later the Mughal Emperor Akbar brought North India, including modern day Pakistan under Mughal rule and he confirmed the Ranas of this locale in their  'jagir' and estates.

Modern Umerkot has many sites of historical significance such as Mughal emperor Akbar's birthplace at Amarkot/Umarkot Fort where he was born on 14/15th  October 1542, this was also the old residence of the Ranas, the earliest foundations of which probably go back to medieval times, around 13th or 14th century, along with later 18th and 19th century changes. Recently, Rana Chandra Singh Sodha (1931–2009) was the Rana of the former Amarkot jagir after 1947, and remained a member of Pakistan's National Assembly and also a federal minister.

The former Rana family no longer lives in Amarkot Fort, which is managed by the Sindh provincial government, they have a house at 'Rana Jagir' their main estate
