Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Najera

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Najera

Nájera is a small town, former bishopric and now Latin Catholic titular see, former capital of the Kingdom of Navarre, located in the Rioja Alta region of La Rioja, northern Spain, on the river Najerilla. Nájera is a stopping point on the Way of St James.

The area attracted the Romans, who built the town of Tritium on land which now falls within the boundaries of Nájera and the neighbouring municipality of Tricio. Subsequently, the area was under Muslim rule and the name Nájera (Naxara meaning town between the rocks) is of Arabic origin.

The town was conquered by Ordoño II of Leon for Navarre in 923. Nájera was the capital city of the kingdom of Navarre until it was conquered by Castile in 1054 after the battle of Atapuerca. However, it continued to be multi-cultural. For example, in 1142 the French abbot Peter the Venerable used his visit to Spain to commission translations of important Islamic works, including the first translation of the Qur'an into a European language, and it has been suggested he met with his four translators at Nájera.

From the tenth century, Nájera had a prosperous Jewish community, which was granted relatively favorable legal status after the Christian conquest. Edward, the Black Prince fought in the Battle of Nájera in 1367, intervening in a Castilian Civil War on behalf of Pedro of Castile.

The church of Santa María la Real was founded by García Sánchez III of Pamplona in 1052. It is the burial-place of Spanish kings. The monks had to abandon the annexed monastic complex in the 19th century, as a result of the anti-clerical reforms of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal.

Other sights include :

Bridge on the Najerilla river, built in the 12th century and remade in 1880
Excavations of the Alcázar (Moorish fort), abandoned in the 16th century
Monastery of Valvanera, 33 kilometres (21 miles) from the town, built in the 11th century, but restored in Gothic style in the 15th century as it became a residence of queen Isabella I of Castile (Isabella of Spain).
Convent of St. Helena (18th century)
Najerillense Museum.

Places of the Camino: Nájera

Nájera, one of the towns of the Camino de Santiago in La Rioja, has a long and illustrious history dating back to its foundation by muslims (the name Najera means place among rocks). After being conquered by the christian king Sancho Garcés I, it became the capital of the kingdom of Pamplone (later Navarre). Later, king Sancho III moved the route of the Camino de Santiago so that it crossed the town, which turned it into a key point of the pilgrimage.

Its main attraction is the monastery of Santa María la Real, which is the burial place of the kings of Navarre.

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Haro

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Haro

Haro is a town and municipality in the northwest of La Rioja province in northern Spain. It is known for its fine red wine and every year the Haro Wine Festival is held where locals hold a wine battle. It has an important architectural heritage, including the main entrance of the Santo Tomás Church, the work of Felipe Vigarny, numerous palaces, and the old town, which was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1975. Apart from its role as home to many of the great bodegas in La Rioja, one of Haro's other claims to fame is that it was the first town in Spain to have electric street lighting.

There are several theories about the founding of Haro, though the most realistic theory is that of Domingo Hergueta, who argued that before the town, there was a lighthouse near the village of Cerro de la Mota which illuminated the mouth of the Ebro river. The town received the name of the lighthouse (faro), and in Castilian Spanish evolved into the name 'Haro'. During the Roman rule of Hispania, a fort called Castrum Bibilium was built in the cliffs of Bibilio.

The first mention of Haro dates back to the year 1040, in a document of king García Sánchez III of Navarreel de Nájera.
Alfonso VI of León and Castile entrusted the tenencia to Diego López I de Haro after the death of count García Ordóñez and the first of the lords of Biscay to attach the name of this town to his patronymic was Diego's son, Lope Díaz I de Haro.

The shield of Haro is made in the center of a castle with battlements on gules, Mazon and doors and windows. On both sides of it, large lions rampant. The shield is covered on top by a ducal crown and the bottom with the hem of the Golden Fleece
The flag consists of the shield of the city in the center, and a red burgundy background typical of the regions of Castile.

8 Logroño to Nájera | full etape | Camino Santiago

8th étape of the Camino Francés from Logroño to Nájera. ☀️

All étapes/videos to Santiago de Compostela are going to be uploaded over the next days and weeks.

After many journeys on the Camino de Santiago in the past ten years, this time the focus lies on the video project. Thus not a lot of stopping during the étapes (some breaks and encounters are cut out).

COVID-19: Filmed in the summer of 2020 when Spain and the camino including most albergues were open again for a few weeks after the first lockdown. Masks in all albergues, bars/restaurants and when crossing cities. There will likely never again be as few people on the camino as in summer of 2020.

Hope you enjoy the video. Thank you so much for watching and maybe see you on the camino one day :-)

BUEN CAMINO!

Along the Camino de Santiago (The Way of Saint James) in Nájera, Spain | BIT 40

At least half of this crazy pandemic we’ve spent it in La Rioja, Spain. We were fortunate enough to live along the Way of Saint James (El Camino Francés) in the Northern part of the country and amongst the rolling hills of wine country!!

Please feel free to ask anything about our beautiful town of Nájera or about La Rioja in general. You can also check out a short video we’ve got on Logroño (another stop on the Camino). if I’m being honest though, if you had to choose between Logroño and Nájera for the night…. it’s Nájera all the way!!!

Day 14: Nájera, Alone Together

Our fourteenth day walking the Camino de Santiago takes us from Navarrete to Azofra.
We walked through Nájera, where we saw caves that were used as a way of defense until the 10th or 11th centuries. Above the cliffs, at the highest point on top of the mountain, is a cross called Cruz Malpica. The unique view is simply the backyard to the people who live, work or worship on the western side of Nájera.
From an interview recorded on the last day of our Camino, we shared one more reason why we’re walking—life stopped making sense. -K&P

Camino de Santiago 2021 | Day 10 | Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

A daily vlog of my journey on the Camino Frances in Northern Spain in September and October of 2021, during Covid and a Holy Year. This vlog is day 10 and chronicles my day of walking from Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a distance of 20.7 kilometers.

Please be kind with comments and feedback; this is the first time I've ever done a vlog (obvious, right? LOL), and it was primarily created with the intention of saving memories, and sharing with friends and family. If you enjoy it, however, please give it a like. Alternatively, if you don't, give it your thumbs down.

If you have any questions about walking the Camino, drop them in the comments section and I'll try to respond to them as soon as I can.

Walking tour Logroño La Rioja | North of Spain [4K]

Logroño was an old settlement, first of the Romans, under the name of Vareia a commercial port, and then of the Celts. From the 10th century, possession of Logroño was disputed between the kings of Navarre and those of Castile; the region was finally annexed to Castile. The name is a combination of le and Groin, mashed together as Logroño over time. Alfonso VI of Castile granted Logroño in 1095 a charter of rights that served as a model for other Spanish cities.
