Having been based in Thailand the past 7 years with Myanmar as a direct neighbour hadn’t diminished my own curiosity about visiting ‘one day’.

Myanmar had of course been closed off to tourism for many years, and has certainly gone through a fair amount of unrest since it’s independence from British Rule in 1948.

These decades of isolation certainly gives you a feeling that it holds many wonders that are waiting to be discovered.

Rumours of spectacular dive locations teeming with marine life – all without the throngs of lifejacket clad daytripping snorkelers. It seemed too good to be true.

So you can imagine that when we got the invitation to visit one of these very islands, we had zero hesitation!

Myeik is on the peninsula that juts into the Andaman Sea. With a location roughly halfway between the Middle East and China, not to mention the safe harbour offered by the peninsula and facing islands, Myeik was an important international port over 500 years ago.

Aung San Suu Kyi
Basically the Ghandi/MLK of Myanmar. Former political dissident & Nobel Peace Prize winner. Her NLD (National League for Democracy) party was elected and is in the process of transferring power. Everyone loves her & you will see her face everywhere.

The gorgeous and remote Myeik (or Mergui) Archipelago lies in the Andaman Sea off the coast of southern Myanmar. To visit these extraordinary islands you will need to join a guided tour, e.g. with the tour operator Life Seeing Tours.
Made up of more than 800 islands which vary in size from smaller ones with just a few palm trees to larger islands of several hundred square kilometres, the archipelago offers great opportunities for exploration and diving amongst spectacular marine life.

It is not just the scenery (under water or over water) that makes the Myeik Archipelago such a fascinating place to visit: the Moken people, also known as the Salone or sea gypsies, are one of the most distinct of Myanmar’s many ethnic groups, living a nomadic, sea-based life here. They have adapted themselves to the water over many hundreds of years.

The amazing tropical Marcus Island (or Harris Island) with a 400 ft long beach can be reached in a 2 hrs boat trip from Myeik.
