The Forbidden Kingdom: Mustang Adventure ????
■ MARPHA, MUSTANG: Nepal, although geographically a rather tiny country perched up on the Himalayan plateau, sandwiched in between India and China, is still home to countless older Kingdoms. One of these is the ancient Kingdom of Mustang which dates back all the way to 1380 and wasn't fully merged into Nepal politically speaking before 2008.
Although it doesn't technically exist as a sovereign state anymore, and it's capital Lo Manthang was in Upper Mustang, it's borders extended past the little town of Marpha, whose ancient Thakali culture is very much alive today. Religion, customs, architecture and food have been remarkably well kept alive here in all its glory.
Some of the buildings in Marpha, although of modest construction, contain materials that are 400 years old. The city is also home to a Tibetan community which adds to the history on full display here.
All this is of course absolutely fantastic as international travellers are able to get a peak back in time as to what life, culture and architecture was like in the Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang hundreds of years ago.... and that was indeed my goal as I boarded my 14 seater airplane in Phokara bound for Jomsom.

With more than five miles of coastline, Mustang Island has plenty of room for fun in the sun. Hang out on the beach, fish in the bay, add birds to your life list, and explore this unspoiled barrier island park. It’s time to head to the coast!
Things to Do
At Mustang Island State Park, what you do is up to you. You can play at the beach (swim, surf, build a sand castle), camp, picnic, fish, hike, mountain bike, kayak, bird watch (especially during spring and fall migrations) and geocache.
Camping
Stay at one of 48 water and electric campsites or 50 drive-up primitive sites. (The water and electric campsites are 1/3 mile from the beach.) Mustang Island has water, cold-water rinse showers and portable toilets along two miles of the beach. Full restrooms and showers with hot water are located near the water-electric campground.

Having reached Kagbeni safely, I decided to ride further the next morning to visit the famous town of Muktinath. Home to a temple and a monastery, Muktinath is one of the few places that is of religious importance to both Hinduism and Buddhism alike. A fabulous stretch of tarmac amidst the gorgeous Mustang landscape, a glimpse of Muktinath and all that comes with it and some time spent exploring the narrow alleys of Kagbeni. Watch the video to see some of what I saw while I was there.

This National Park is just amazing.
Unfortunately the USA is taken over by Chinese tourists.
It's not only here, but everywhere. Big Yellow Chinese touring cars full of tourists are getting dropped of and ruin all the scenic spots.
Everybody is welcome the nature, but the annoying part is, that 1 touring car is full of people, and when they get out they don't take other people in account.
We tried to run away from the tourists but sometimes they still follow you wherever you go.
The onyl good thing is. These tourists are not hiking for a long path and just stay close to their touring car. So if you want to get rid of them... WALK!
Walk the hell out of that spot.

RV camping with electric and water hookups, a beach area segregated from vehicular beach access, primitive camping directly on the beach, and a fishing jetty await at Mustang Island State Park. Verizon cellular service clocked in at 35.8 Mbps download speed and 4.92 Mbps upload speed. AT&T cellular service clocked in at 20.0 Mbps download speed and 1.48 Mbps upload speed. Mustang Island State Park, Corpus Christi, TX
Mustang Island State Park is located in Corpus Christi, TX. This barrier island park has more than five miles of coastline to enjoy fishing, birdwatching, swimming, picnicking, camping, kayaking, and playing on the beach. There are 48 water and electric campsites with toilets and showers located nearby and 50 drive up sites. The water/electric campsites are NOT on the beach. There are portable toilets located in the day use parking area and along the beach. Nearby attractions include Port Aransas, the Texas State Aquarium, the USS Lexington, and Padre Island National Seashore (PINS). Hours are daily 8am-5pm.
We reserved a day pass online.
$5 per person. 12 years old and under are free. Reserving a day pass guarantees your entry and parking. Or you can purchase an annual Texas State Parks Pass for $70. (Still reserve a day pass online, though, if you want to make sure you can get in. Parks can sell out day passes, especially during the spring/summer). This will allow you entry to 89 Texas state parks for you and your guests, discounts on camping, and park store discounts. Check their website for discounts for seniors, veterans, and disabled folks.
Here's how we enjoyed the park:
We stayed in a VRBO in Port Aransas for the Memorial Day weekend. I highly recommend this condo. The condo association has a private wooden walkway to the beach- a short and convenient walk. We reserved a day pass for each day we visited the park. We were there Memorial Day weekend. On Sunday, the park was full by 10:00am and only open to those with reserved camping spaces and reserved day passes. We fished off the jetties with shrimp purchased at a bait shop in Port Aransas. We played in the sand, beachcombed, watched the birds. On the days we were there, there was a strong surf, strong wind, and a red flag warning, so we did not play in the water. For those who have never visited- keep in mind this is the Texas coast. The water is not enticing for swimming. We did not have our 4X4 truck during this trip, so we parked in the day use parking and walked the rest of the way to the beach and jetties. The jetties are about a 1/2 mile from the day use parking lot. Some days, it may be possible to access the beach without 4 wheel drive, but the park ranger let us know at check in that the sand was getting soft due to weather conditions and recommended against it. Bring some snacks or a picnic on your way there- there's not a store or restaurant conveniently close. There's a very small gift store inside the white trailer near the front of the park. They had limited souvenir and camping items. At the restrooms, there are also outside shower faucets to rinse your feet before you leave. This park is great for bird watching. We loved watching the squadron of pelicans flying in their formation. The park has it's own kind of beauty, but it is a harsh and wild environment. Bring water, sunscreen, snacks, chairs and shelter from the sun.
