10 Most Rural Counties in Illinois

People usually think of Chicago when they picture Illinois, but the state is actually much more rural than outsiders would realize, if they haven't traveled through the area. Some counties in Illinois have more cows than humans, and the population density for a square mile is less than that of a standard city block in other areas. In this video, we're looking at the 10 counties in Illinois with the smallest population density.

Coal Mining and Rural Racial Segregation: Herrin & Colp, Illinois 4K.

Herrin is a former coal mining town in Southern Illinois. Economically, the town is actually doing alright, benefiting from nearby Carbondale and Marion. The second town that I feature in this video is Colp, which is west of Herrin and is tiny. Back in the day, Colp was a town where people of color would go live in a region full of sundown towns.

Herrin: 1:56 - 17:30
Herrin High School: 2:25
Former Maytag Plant: 4:25
Downtown Herrin: 10:00

A Forgotten Mining Town in Southern Illinois

A Forgotten Mining Town in Southern Illinois - We explore the forgotten history of a small mining town in Southern Illinois. A virtual time capsule that invokes feelings of nostalgia this forgotten Illinois town is filled with history & relics from the past. A genuine mining town you can find evidence throughout the town of the mining that once occurred here. Interestingly enough during the 1940s mining here was so important that the U.S. government built a housing project and armed guards watched the mines!!! And despite losing its main source of income and being subjected to massive flooding by the Ohio River over the years, this Southern Illinois town hangs on. Find out why in this episode of SightseeingSally.

What to Expect at the Crater of Diamonds State Park!!

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the Crater of Diamonds State Park once again. It was mid December. From what I understand, their prices have changed since the new year, from $10 for an adult to dig for the day to $13.

In this video I go over a few basics that I employ during my visits at the Crater, show a few types of rocks you can find, and get up close to what the heavier diamond indicator material looks like in the center of your flips.

I hope that this video looks like help to you if you should decide to visit this unique Arkansas State park.

Blessings!!

Murfreesboro is a city in and county seat of Rutherford County,[8] Tennessee, United States. #12 of 13 - 2021 Nov - Fall Colors - Lake Murphysboro Illinois Rt148 Rt51 DashCam Scenic Road Trip

This next set of videos was taken over 2 days, November 11 and 12, 2021. I am not posting the videos from the ride home; we all know how boring US57 is in Illinois. That being said, I’ve reduced a great amount of dashcam footage to the areas I felt were the most scenic and informative. 13 in all, sorry to say.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Video #1 of 13 – begins on southbound US57 close to the exit (Rt16) for Charleston, IL and Eastern Illinois University to the east and Mattoon to the west. I travel on Rt16 through Charleston with no turns and head to southbound Rt130. It is not a quick trip, but I have increased the speed of the video on Rt16 heading to the city of Charleston. The fall colors are lovely on this route. This video ends just as I turn into Fox Ridge State Park.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Video #2 of 13 – begins at the entrance of Fox Ridge State Park off of RT130, touring this very lovely park, where the fall colors are very colorful. It was not very crowded, so there aren’t many cars interrupting the view. I exit the Park on southbound RT130 and continues south where it ends at the north side of Newton, Illinois. Speed is also increased from Fox Ridge State Park to Newton.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Video #3 of 13 – begins entering Newton, Illinois with a great view of this lovely town, continues south on Rt130 and ends at the north of Albion, Illinois. Speed also increased to avoid certain boredom. Colors are very nice on Rt130. Albion, Illinois can be found at intersection of Rt130 and Rt15.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #4 of 13 – Tour continues south on Rt130 at north side of Albion, IL and heads west on RT15. The city of Albion is very nice, even as the setting sun begins to hamper the view. Again, speed in increased when not traveling through towns such as Albion, Fairfield, and Wayne City. There was a detour in Mt Vernon on westbound Rt15. I may have edited out some of these roads in the interest of time. The video ends in the parking lot of the Drury Inn in Mt Vernon, Illinois.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #5 of 13 – Begins with heading out at my hotel, heading south on 57 to Marion, Illinois and breakfast at Cracker Barrel. It was raining, wipers are wiping, and I’ve sped up the footage to, again, avoid boredom. You can still see the fall colors on the side of the highway.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #6 of 13 – Leaving Cracker Barrel and heading to tour Giant City State Park by way of RT148. Footage ends entering Makanda from the north. Beautiful colors. Skies were cloudy, but you can also see colors in my return trip to Giant City State Park in video #10.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #7 of 13 – begins at north side of Makanda and heading to Anna (to get gas) by way of Rt25/Shiloh Rds. I have also increased the speed of the footage on Rt51. Ends at the gas station in Anna, Illinois.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #8 of 13 – heading to Cobden and Alto Pass. Since I already covered Rt51 heading south, I begin this footage heading north just before the road to Cobden, Illinois. Very pretty fall colors on this route. I pass through Cobden, Alto Pass and head to Bald Knob Cross. The footage ends at Bald Knob Cross Rd/Rt127.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #9 of 13 – Leaving Bald Knob Cross/Rt127, I head to Makanda by way of Alto Pass. I skip Cobden in order to use a different road, Jamestown and Old Hwy 51 where I meet Rt51.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #10 of 13 – Return trip to Giant City State Park tour and head out. Ends at Rt148/Rt13 intersection.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #11 of 13 – heading to Murphysboro, Illinois via Rt13. Footage is again increased in boring sections. Ends on Rt13/Rt149 a few miles east of entrance to Lake Murphysboro.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #12 of 13 – tour of Lake Murphysboro, heading back to Carbondale via Rt127, Rt149 ad Rt51. Footage ends on Rt51near intersection of Rt51 and Rt13.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Video #13 of 13 – Tour of Carbondale which includes a favorite area of mine (twice. I had a car behind me and couldn’t stop). Then, tour a little bit of SIU campus and Campus Lake. Needing to waste come time, I headed out of SIU area and stopped at Hobby Lobby to shop. This is where I end. The parking lot of Hobby Lobby
. --------------------------------------------------------------------
Watch for more videos from future trips. Thank you.

Driving Around Downtown Murfreesboro, TN in 4k Video

Filmed on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, I drive around the Nashville suburb Murfreesboro, Tennessee to see what's going on.

Murfreesboro is a city in Rutherford County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 152,769 according to the 2020 census, up from 108,755 residents certified in 2010.

On October 27, 1811, the Tennessee General Assembly designated the location for a new county seat for Rutherford County, giving it the name Cannonsburgh in honor of Newton Cannon, representative to the Assembly for the local area.

At the suggestion of William Lytle, it was renamed Murfreesborough on November 29, 1811, after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree. The name was shortened to Murfreesboro in January 1812 when the town was formally chartered.

As Tennessee settlement expanded to the west, the location of the state capital in Knoxville became inconvenient for much of the population. In 1818, Murfreesboro was designated as the capital of Tennessee and its population boomed. Eight years later, however, it was superseded by Nashville.

On December 31, 1862, the Battle of Stones River, also called the Battle of Murfreesboro, was fought near the city between the Union Army of the Cumberland and the Confederate Army of Tennessee. This was a major engagement of the American Civil War, and between December 31 and January 2, 1863, the rival armies suffered a combined total of 23,515 casualties. It was the bloodiest battle of the war by percentage of casualties.

Despite the wartime trauma, the town's growth had begun to recover by the early 1900s, in contrast to other areas of the devastated South.

In 1911, the state legislature created Middle Tennessee State Normal School, a two-year institute to train teachers. It soon merged with the Tennessee College for Women. In 1925 the Normal School was expanded to a full, four-year curriculum and college. With additional expansion of programs and addition of graduate departments, in 1965 it became Middle Tennessee State University. MTSU now has the largest undergraduate enrollment in the state, including many international students.

World War II was an impetus for industrial development, and Murfreesboro diversified into industry, manufacturing, and education. Growth has been steady since that time, creating a stable economy.

Since the last decade of the 20th century, Murfreesboro has enjoyed substantial residential and commercial growth, with its population increasing 123.9% between 1990 and 2010, from 44,922 to 108,755. The city has been a destination for many refugee immigrants who have left areas affected by warfare; since 1990 numerous people from Somalia and Kurds from Iraq have settled there.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 152,769 people residing in the city.

The racial makeup of the city was 75.62% White, 15.18% Black / African American, 0.35% Native American, 3.36% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.79% from other races, and 2.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.93% of the population.

The per capita income for the city was $20,219. About 8.2% of families and 14.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older. #driving #travel #drivingtour
