Things to do in Motril in Spain!

Here is our top 10, enjoy!

Motril is a town in the province of Granada, located in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in the south of Spain. With a population of around 60,000 inhabitants, it is the second-largest town in the province and an important economic and cultural center in the region. In this essay, we will explore the history, culture, economy, and attractions of Motril, as well as its significance in the wider context of Andalusia and Spain.

History:

The history of Motril dates back to the Roman era when it was known as Sexi, a name that was derived from the Phoenician word for fortress. The town was an important center of trade and commerce, thanks to its strategic location on the coast and its proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountain range. During the Arab rule of Spain, Motril was known as Motreel, and it flourished as a center of agriculture and trade, particularly in sugar cane, which was grown extensively in the region.

In the 16th century, Motril became part of the Kingdom of Granada, following the conquest of the Moors by the Catholic Monarchs. During this period, the town suffered from various attacks and sieges by pirates and privateers who sailed the Mediterranean Sea. In the 19th century, Motril experienced a period of growth and modernization, with the construction of a new port and the introduction of new crops, such as tropical fruits, which became an important part of the local economy.

Culture:

Motril has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, which is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, music, and festivals. The town's historical center, known as the Barrio de la Villa, features a number of landmarks and monuments that testify to its long and varied history. One of the most important of these is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza, a Baroque-style temple that dates back to the 18th century and contains a number of valuable works of art.

Motril's cuisine is also a reflection of its cultural heritage, with a mix of traditional Andalusian dishes and local specialties. One of the most famous dishes is the pescaíto frito, a dish of fried fish that is typically served as a tapa or small plate in local bars and restaurants. Other local specialties include the tropical salad, a mix of tropical fruits, and the tarta de San Marcos, a cake made with almonds and egg yolk.

Music is also an important part of Motril's cultural scene, with a number of festivals and events throughout the year that showcase different styles and genres. One of the most important of these is the Festival de Jazz en la Costa, which takes place every July and attracts musicians and fans from around the world.

Economy:

Motril's economy is based on a mix of agriculture, industry, and services, with a particular emphasis on tourism and trade. The town's port is one of the most important in the region, with connections to other parts of Spain and North Africa. The port also serves as a hub for the import and export of goods, particularly tropical fruits, which are grown in the region and shipped to other parts of Europe.

Agriculture is also an important sector, with a variety of crops grown in the fertile plains surrounding the town. These include sugar cane, subtropical fruits such as avocados and mangos, and vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers.

Tourism is another key sector, with the town's location on the Costa Tropical and its mild climate attracting visitors throughout the year. Motril has a number of attractions for tourists, including its beaches, historical landmarks, and cultural events. The town also serves as a gateway to the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Costa Tropical - The alternative to Costa del Sol

The Costa Tropical of Granada province is particularly picturesque beachside, more relaxed, with a perfect sub-tropical climate.

Although it is not as widely known as the Costa del Sol, many tourists are starting to head east towards Costa Tropical, where they can enjoy a taste of traditional Spain with it small charming fishing villages and white mountain villages.

The mountains run right down to the sea and the coastline is typically a series of coves and promontories. Inland from the Costa Tropical you find yourself in Las Alpujarras, one of the most
naturally striking and beautiful regions in Spain, and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Enjoy sun and ski on the Costa Tropical.

Granada is all about music and poetry, authentic architectural art and millennial culture. The province hugs the sky from the steep peaks of the Sierra Nevada, its monumental cities extend over the Altiplano and its white villages are scattered between valleys and slopes, which end in the cliffs and beaches of the Costa Tropical. The province of Granada, a privileged tourist destination, allows its visitors to ski in the Sierra Nevada, venture into the villages deep in the Alpujarras, travel the last frontier of Al-Andalus in the Poniente Granadino or explore the caves testifying to troglodyte life.

History :
The whole province is full of attractions for architectural and cultural tourism. The small town of Santa Fe witnessed the preparations for the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, and Fuente Vaqueros was the birthplace of Federico García Lorca, one of the most important poets and playwrights of Spanish literature.

The Granada plateau preserves the remains of a hominid dating back to one or two million years ago. The inhabitants of Baza, an Iberian people, bequeathed to posterity a relic of great historical and cultural value: the Lady of Baza (Iberian sculpture).

Countryside :
The province of Granada is characterized by a staircase of plateaus that descend from the peaks to the Mediterranean. These high plateaus and the altitude of the land make the winters very cold. This climate has a heavy influence on vegetation, agriculture, livestock and game.

The province of Granada is divided into three well-differentiated regions: the coast, the plain of Granada and the mountain region. Each of them has particular climatic, orographic, historical and geographical characteristics, which make it unique.

Around the 5th century BC. J.-C., coins minted by the Turdules testify to the origins of the capital of this superb province. In the 8th century, the Berbers conquered these lands which would reach their peak with the Nasrids, who would bring economic, social, artistic and cultural development, and whose influence remains palpable today.

Visit Granada and you will discover one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. With the peaks of the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop, this city stands out above all for its architecture and its emblematic monuments, such as the Alhambra. To help you organize your stay in Granada more easily, we have listed the best things to do in Granada: you will know everything to visit the beautiful Andalusian.

In 2019 Granada had a population of 232,462 people, of whom 124,907 were women and 107,555 men. The neighborhoods it has are very different from each other, partly due to the diversity of coexisting cultures and religions and, already in the 19th century, xx, due to the continued immigration that occurred until the 1990s in the context of de-ruralization; the most important are Zaidín, La Chana, Centro-Sagrario, Realejo, Albaicín, Sacromonte and Cartuja.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

Motril in 100 seconds

Motril - Spain is the biggest coastal town in the province of Granada, Andalucia, Spain. The area is known as the “Tropical Coast” due to its tropical-like temperatures enjoyed all year round.

We were in Motril for a few days at the beginning of 2022 and the daytime temperatures ranged between 15 and 20 degrees Celcius. It got much cooler once the sun set and in the evenings.

This video only portrays a small area of Motril, part of the town centre and a little bit of the beach. It isn’t, by any means, a full representation of the whole town.

Motril is best enjoyed in the early summer, when the beaches are not yet fully crowded with tourists but the weather allows for full days enjoying the sun.

???????? Motril is a town and municipality on the Mediterranean coast in the province of Granada, Spain. Motril is the second largest town in the province, with a population of 61,171 as of 2012. The town is located near the Guadalfeo River and 69 km (43 mi) from Granada. The council of Motril includes the city of Motril and the neighbourhoods of El Varadero,Torrenueva, Carchuna, Calahonda, Puntalón, Playa Granada, Las Ventillas, La Perla, La Garnatilla and La Chucha. The town is the capital of the region of the Coast of Granada. King Baudouin of the Belgians died in Motril of heart failure during a visit to their summer residence, villa Astrida in 1993.
Motril belongs to the Costa Tropical, a large region of the coast is very famous and touristic. Motril beaches can be small (bays)or large (like Playa Granada). The weather is usually good, so they are very popular during the summer by people from the surrounding as well as the interior regions. The main problems are the wind and the jellyfish. Although its origin still remains hidden, it was a Phoenician enclave. It already existed in Roman times, although we cannot say it was one of cities named Murgis, mentioned in Baetica by Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy. When the Christians conquered Motil, there were 2000 inhabitants for agriculture, fishing and the production of silk and sugar. The villa occupied 3.5 km (2.2 mi). Outside the city there are two suburb: Al-Majon suburb and
al-Couruch suburb and a neighborhood called Jandara. In Motril's history, there was a Moorish uprising in 1596 that finished in 1570 with the Christians' victory. This made a recession of sugar production but this finished 5 years later with the repopulation of old Christians. By the end of XVINuestra Señora de la Cabeza's church was built. The most important was La Casa de la Palma. Now it's the place where the Museo Preindustrial de la Caña de Azúcar iss found. In 1657, Philip IV granted Motril the title of city, separating its jurisdiction from Granada. At the beginning of the next century, Philip V distinguished Motril as Muy Noble y Leal, which is now found on Motril's shield. After the War of Independence.

3) Toledo - one of the most popular day trips from Madrid. One hour by bus gets you to the charming UNESCO-listed city. Highly recommended.
4) Granada is small and cozy, with beautiful views of snow covered mountains.

Thank you guys for watching!
