Mossel Bay - South Africa

A Guide to Accommodation, Activities, Restaurants & Businesses in Mossel Bay, South Africa

Mossel Bay, famous for the Old Post Office Tree and Bartholomeu Diaz, is a seaside town in the Garden Route of the Western Cape. Mossel Bay is closely linked to maritime activities with its lighthouse being first lit in 1864. One of the most famous landmarks in Mossel Bay is the Post Office Tree, where ancient seafarers on their way to the east left their letters for home in a shoe or iron pot. Sailors returning to Portugal would collect these letters and so the first Post Office in Southern Africa was founded.

Mossel Bay offers the full spectrum of accommodation options to suit every taste and budget. Camp sites and caravan parks, B&Bs, luxury lodges and hotels are spread out around the town. Beach-front accommodation is also widely available.

Mossel Bay has many activities to suit all adventure and leisure visitors! Seal Island is home to a breeding colony of hundreds of seals and they can be viewed taking the daily boat trip out to the island. The town is a sportsman’s and water sport lovers paradise, offering a wide variety of adventure sports including shark cage diving, wreck diving, surfing, and snorkelling. Conventional sport facilities are also in abundance with golf, squash, tennis, indoor heated pools, horse riding and swimming.

Did you know that Mossel Bay is the only north-facing beach in Southern Africa?

South Africa, Knysna, Mossel Bay, Oudtshoorn - Garden Route South Africa Part2 - South Africa Travel

Drive through Southern Coast of South Africa. A perfect Garden Route road trip along coastal line of South Africa. This South Africa travel series covers the key destinations starting from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
South Africa also follow left hand driving, so driving was quite easy. The road following the coast line is extremely good and people in general drive safe and slow inside the towns and colonies. Our Indian driving license was good enough to rent a car from Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. We dropped it in Cape town before taking the flight from there. But yes, just to be little more relaxed we did purchase insurance for any damage to the car.

Enjoy watching our road trip and do let us know if you liked the video !

10 Amazing Places to Visit in South Africa

10 Amazing Places to Visit in South Africa

Kruger National Park: One of South Africa’s most famous and accessible game reserves, the Kruger National Park is a wildlife lover’s dream. Located in the north-east of the country, The Kruger National Park covers an enormous stretch of ecosystems that support all kinds of wildlife – from grasslands and dense forests to thickets and dry riverbeds.

Cape Town: The Mother City, with its gorgeous beaches, majestic mountain views, and friendly people, is a highlight on any South African bucket list. It may only be the second-largest city in the country, but it’s easily one of the most recognizable cities in the world. Located on the southwest tip of South Africa’s Western Cape Province, Cape Town enjoys a mild, Mediterranean climate and a spectacular natural setting.

Cape Winelands: If you’re a wine connoisseur, you’ll be in your element in South Africa’s extraordinary Cape Winelands. Located just a 45-minute drive from Cape Town, it’s one of the most picturesque wine-producing regions in the world, with undulating vineyards and spectacular mountain views from just about anywhere.

Hermanus: The once-sleepy, now touristy town of Hermanus in the Western Cape is the whale watching capital of South Africa – and for good reason.

Blyde River Canyon: Tangled in subtropical foliage, the Blyde River Canyon is the largest green canyon on the planet, and one of the deepest natural canyons on Earth.

Durban: While often overshadowed by bigger sisters Cape Town and Joburg, the port city of Durban (South Africa’s busiest) has plenty to offer all of its own – particularly if you are visiting during the southern hemisphere winter. With average temperatures in the mid-20s from June to July, winter simply doesn’t exist here!

Addo Elephant National Park: With humble beginnings as a small elephant sanctuary established to protect just 11 reddish-colored Addo elephants in the 1930s, Addo Elephant National Park is now one of South Africa’s largest national parks – and possibly one of the best for spotting these gentle giants.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park: Reaching out into both South Africa and neighboring Botswana, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (meaning ‘Great Thirst’) is a desert wilderness with terrain that’s totally unique. Amidst the salt pans, bushveld, and rust-red dunes of the Kalahari are hordes of plains game, such as wildebeest, springbok (South Africa’s national animal), and gemsbok that are hunted in turn by predators like lions, cheetah, and leopards.

Drakensberg: The Drakensberg is a mountain range in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. Often shortened to just ‘The Berg’ by locals, the Drakensberg means ‘Mountains of the Dragon.’ The meaning of such a dramatic name isn’t lost on you when you see the might and majesty of these mountains.

Garden Route: One of the most beautiful drives in the world, the Garden Route meanders past seaside villages, game reserves, forests, lagoons, and white sandy beaches, with the brilliant blues of the Indian Ocean right alongside you. Stretching from Mossel Bay to St. Francis, this tourist route is what lures most international visitors to South Africa.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN MOSSEL BAY, SOUTH AFRICA || Pinnacle point

In today's video we show you the top things to do in Mossel Bay, South Africa and a little bit of Pinnacle Point Golf Course which was voted not only South Africa's number 1 golf course but Africa's number 1 golf course.

We also visit the Bartolomeu Dias Museum which is situated on the site of the first meeting between European explorers and the Khoi, and overlooks the Indian Ocean in Mossel Bay. . The museum is home to five National Monuments .

A major attraction at the museum is the Post Tree. In 1500 a Portuguese commander left a letter in an old shoe under a Milkwood tree. The letter was then picked up by a sailor in 1501 who was en-route to India. The tree became known as the Post Office Tree, and would be used by a number of sailors to 'post' their letters.
