Город был образован в 1939 году объединением городов Мошон и Мадьяровар.
Он расположен на реке Лайта (приток Дуная) в 40 километрах от Дьёра (столицы медье). В городе пересекаются автодорога Братислава — Дьёр и железнодорожная линия Вена — Будапешт.
История
Название города образовано из двух частей. Мошон обозначает «поселение на болоте», а Мадьяровар — «венгерская крепость». Собственно, некогда это были два отдельных населённых пункта.
Известно, что в 1 веке здесь находился римский лагерь Ад Флексум, охранявший границы провинции Паннонии. Он был разрушен под натиском варваров.
В начале 11 века король Иштван I Святой построил на этом месте крепость Мошон для защиты кордонов венгерского королевства. Населённый пункт быстро превратился в пограничный торговый город. Город несколько раз подвергался нападениям армий соседних стран, возрождался, но после нападения армии чешского короля Оттокара II в 1271 году замок Мошон сравняли с землёй.
Вскоре рядом с разрушенным городом построили новый — Мадьяровар. Первыми поселенцами стали жители Мошона. В 1354 году новое поселение стало королевским городом. Он тоже имел замок, который тоже постигла нелёгкая судьба. Во время турецких войн 16-17 веков он минимум дважды подвергался значительным разрушениями. В 1721 году Мадьяровар утратил военное значение.
Мошон и Мадьяровар развивались на протяжении нескольких веков фактически как один населённый пункт. Уже в начале 20 века возникла идея их объединения. Но оно случилось лишь в 1939 году.
Современный Мошонмадьяровар — небольшой промышленный центр. Он известен как стоматологический центр. По числу стоматологов на душу населения Мошонмадьяровар занимает первое место в мире. Сюда приезжают лечить зубы из соседней Австрии (и других европейских стран), где это стоит дороже, чем в Венгрии.
