Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!
11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).
10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.
9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??
8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.
7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.
6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!
5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.
4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.
3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)
2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.
1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

La Pedriza del Manzanares pertenece al denominado anteriormente Parque Regional de la Cuenca alta del Manzanares, que junto con el denominado anteriormente Parque Natural de Peñalara, conforman el nuevo Parque Nacional de Guadarrama. La Pedriza es un gran batolito granítico situado en la vertiente sur de la sierra de Guadarrama, dentro del municipio Manzanares el Real. Este canchal berroqueño está formado por numerosos riscos, paredes rocosas, arroyos y praderas. Es una zona de gran interés geológico, paisajístico y deportivo. Las acciones mecánicas que se han ejercido sobre estas rocas durante millones de años han conformado formas muy curiosas y atractivas, sobre todo para los escaladores, ya que cuentan con cerca de mil vías de escalada de distintas dificultades. El senderismo es otro deporte muy practicado en La Pedriza.
A lo largo de la historia, el río Manzanares sólo ha despertado burlas, quejas y lamentos por su condición, definida mejor que nadie por Quevedo, de aprendiz de río. Incluso hoy, que la parte más conocida de su curso ha sido coronada con ese adorno llamado Parque Lineal del Manzanares, no consigue levantar los ánimos. Todo lo contrario que provoca cuando se le descubre al encaramarse al roquedo pedricero, en busca de sus veneros.
Charcas apetecibles, gargantas abiertas en la roca viva y chorros espectaculares despeñándose entre peñas primordiales. Esto es también el Manzanares, un río con dos caras tan diferentes que no parecen del mismo. Hoy visitaremos la más auténtica, la que marca su verdadera esencia. Lo que le pasa aguas abajo, represado, canalizado y contaminado por una urbe que hace mucho decidió quedarse a su vera para no asomarse jamás a sus orillas, ya no es culpa suya.
El recorrido del curso alto de nuestro río es una apetecible excursión que nos lleva desde Manzanares el Real, a través de parajes sobresalientes de la Pedriza, en un territorio que hoy es espacio natural protegido. El Tranco es el punto de partida, a donde se llega en una tirada poco agraciada desde el centro de dicha localidad serrana.
Desde el pequeño aparcamiento de este punto, continuar dirección Oeste. Enseguida se alcanza la vera del río, que a estas alturas presenta sus primeras piscinas naturales, aquí con diminutas playas de arena incluso. El camino discurre un corto trecho sobre un murete de lajas, por el que se alcanza la pequeña presa de La Garganta.
El camino es utilizado por el sendero de gran recorrido GR-10 hasta las cercanías de Canto Cochino, kilómetro y medio aguas arriba. También es un sendero de pequeño recorrido de Manzanares, por lo que en esta primera parte está señalizado con marcas blanquiamarillas.
Siempre por la orilla izquierda del Manzanares, es decir, con el río a mano izquierda, a la altura de la presa ascender por una laja inclinada de granito. En este punto conviene extremar las precauciones pues ocasionalmente la pulida piedra está húmeda o mojada, volviéndose muy resbaladiza. Así se entra en la garganta Camorza, abierta por las aguas entre los canchos del Tranco y el cerro de La Camorza.
Transcurrido medio kilómetro, el río da un giro de 90º dirección Norte, justo a la altura de un chiringuito alegal, en cuyo entorno se acumulan basuras, trozos de cristales y otros restos. A partir de este punto la garganta se abre en la depresión de Canto Cochino. Hay que continuar otros 500 metros, siempre junto al río, que seduce con sucesivos remansos arenosos sombreados por un frondoso arbolado.

We absolutely LOVE traveling internationally. HOWEVER, two long haul flights in the span of seven days proved to be a little much for us LOL. Come along with us as we fly in United Airlines Basic Economy section from Chicago to D.C., before making the long flight across the Atlantic to Madrid!
The day started by saying goodbye to our dear friend Matt in Chicago. He's one of our best friends in the world and it made the trip so much better by getting to see him. We met up with our friends Giovanna and Justin who came all the way up to surprise Trey the day before we left! We made a quick pit stop for breakfast at Denny's before getting to O'Hare.
Our United flight to Dulles Airport was pretty simple. We made it in good time and had a short layover there. We spent the time calling family one last time and working on a few things for the vlog. Before we knew it, it was time to board.
We sat in Basic Economy with United because it was VERY affordable (only $617 round-trip for both of us!!) & because they had the two-seated sections on most flights. This allowed us to sit next to each other without having the third seat which we really like! After spending some time waiting to taxi, it was off to Spain!
The flight was long, but relatively smooth. After about 8 hours or so we arrived in Madrid to the sunshine and the heat that we kind of missed! We got off the plane and grabbed our rental car at AVIS before heading off to the small town of Maralzarzal. We stayed there since it was really cheap, and also halfway between Madrid and the beautiful town of Segovia. That's where our next vlog will be!!

Today's travel day proved to be A LOT longer than we planned, however some of that was our fault LOL. Come along with us as we fly with Iberia Airlines to our 15th country of BELGIUM!
We began the day by leaving our small Airbnb in Moralzaral. We made the 45 minute drive into the center of Madrid to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in order to score some Real Madrid shorts, but unfortunately we were unsuccessful. It was no problem though as we then made our way to the airport. The airport proved a bit difficult to reach due to issues with GPS, toll booths, and different terminals, but we arrived still with PLENTY of time in order to catch our flight.
Once in Iberia Airlines Terminal 4 in Madrid, we made our way over to the AENA VIP Lounge - Plaza Mayor in order to grab a bit of food and drink before the flight. We were able to access this lounge because of its participation in the Priority Pass program, which comes with our American Express Platinum card. After a couple of hours & LOTS of work, it was time to head to our gate to hop on our flight! We were flying with Iberia Airlines to Brussels which is always a bit more comfortable than the budget airlines around Europe. We spent pretty much the entire flight watching Netflix. When you're in other countries, there may be shows on Netflix that you don't have back home. The Office, for example, is still available in Spain on Netflix. When you download the shows on wifi, your location is based on the wifi router (most times) and allows you to download the show. Once you move your phone to data, or airplane mode (basically no wifi) your location is based on your provider and can make the shows you just downloaded unavailable. I turned off the “local network” settings for Netflix on my phone and was able to watch The Office for the duration of the flight. Instructions for this setting are below:

After a couple hours, we landed in Brussels and made our way to the bus stop. We had great luck with the transportation in Brussels this time, however as you'll see in a couple vlogs from now, public transportation can prove to be very difficult here. Thankfully we were able to arrive in Brussels safely and made it to our Airbnb.

Muchos de los Castillos de España aún se conservan, en el vídeo veremos algunos que se encuentran en TOLEDO, según narra la historia no eran los típicos castillos usados como viviendas señoriales sino más bien eran destinados como FORTALEZAS defensivas y militares.
Los CASTILLOS que aparecerán son: CASTILLO de ALMONACID, CASTILLO de BARCIENCE, CASTILLO de ESCALONA, y CASTILLO DE GUADAMUR. Los tres primeros como vemos en las imágenes se encuentran en ruinas, unos mejor conservados que otros, y el de GUADAMUR, está en pie y podemos acceder a él, reservando cita y pagando por la entrada.
Visitar los CASTILLOS tiene su encanto, porque estando cerca de ellos o dentro podemos imaginar cómo sería vivir allí en esa época.

Leyenda de Los Siete Picos: desde el Puerto de Navacerrada | Senderismo Sierra de Guadarrama, Madrid
Los Siete Picos es una de las montañas míticas de la Sierra Noerte de Comunidad de Madrid. ¿Sabías qué en la edad media se la conocía cómo la Sierra del Dragón? Si quieres saber por qué yo te cuento la leyenda de su formación. La ruta es una caminata circular, desde el Puerto de Navacerrada subiré hasta el Alto del Telégrafo y desde allí afrontaré la subida a los Siete Picos, comenzando por el Somontano, el más alto de los siete. Caminaré por la cresta y bajaré hasta el Majalasna, el más occidental y pequeño de todos. Una divertida ruta con una leyenda muy curiosa, que no te puedes perder.
Los Siete Picos is one of the mythical mountains of the Sierra Noerte in the Community of Madrid. Did you know that in the middle ages it was known as the Sierra del Dragón? If you want to know why I will tell you the legend of its formation. The route is a circular walk, from Puerto de Navacerrada I will go up to Alto del Telégrafo and from there I will face the ascent to the Seven Peaks, starting with Somontano, the highest of the seven. I will walk along the ridge and go down to the Majalasna, the westernmost and smallest of all. A fun route with a very curious legend, which you cannot miss.

Horse Riding for the First Time | San Bruno, Los Montesinos (Orihuela Costa)
We checked something off the bucket list as we went horse riding for the first time! We have wanted to try horse riding for a long time so decided to book with San Bruno in Los Montesinos (Orihuela Costa) and are so glad we did!! We had the most amazing experience as Sandra helped us learn how to ride the horses and took us on a beautiful hack up to the Torrevieja Salt Lakes. This is a great activity to do if you're in the Torrevieja, Los Montesinos, Quesada area, and we would definitely recommend doing it here at Hipica San Bruno.

Muchos se preguntan qué pueden hacer y ver en un pueblo pequeño, y se sorprenden al descubrir en Patones de Arriba un lugar mágico, si entendemos por magia la verde naturaleza y los balcones repletos de flores, las casas de pizarra y piedra, un hotelito acogedor casi escondido entre sinuosas calles empredradas y el quedarse con la boca abierta al doblar la esquina y toparse con un rincón de escenario de pelicula, donde apetece detenerse y tomarse unas fotografías o simplemente descansar un rato conversando, meditando o disfrutando del canto de las aves.
Patones de Arriba ocupa un interesante lugar en las listas de gastronomía de España. En este pueblo se encuentran algunos magníficos restaurantes, como El Rey de Patones, La Cabaña y Las Heras, todos buenísimos. ¡Pero existen muchos más! Incluso una taberna muy pintoresca llamada La Bruja de Patones. Para quienes buscan alojamiento en el paraíso, el hotel El Tiempo Perdido puede ser una opción magnífica, aunque supongo que tendrán que reservar con mucha antelación.
