Today we’re visiting Alquézar in Huesca, Aragón. One of Spain’s most beautiful villages...

What’s up guys? Patrick here, Tour Guide and Your Guide to Barcelona and more. If you’re new here, my channel is all about helping you get prepared for your next trip to Barcelona, or Spain in general, while uncovering to all those amazing places that this country has to offer! Today we’re heading outside of Barcelona, out of Catalonia to the region next door, Aragon. Specifically Alquezar, a magical town that seems like it’s frozen in time, the perfect place that I love to visit. So if you like the video check out some other that I have on my channel and don’t forget to subscribe to see more videos about what you can do to see the best of Barcelona and Spain as a whole!

Alquezar has been one of Spain’s most beautiful villages since 2015, and it’s easy to see why. The name comes from the Arabic Al-Qasr or Alcazar which was a fortress or castle. You might see these more in the south where Muslim influence lasted longer, so having an entire town with this name lets you know exactly what its purpose was in the past: a fortress.
The town dates back to the 9th century and was a military point under Jalaf Ibn Rasid to protect Barbastro from the Christian in the east. Taken by King Sancho Ramirez in the 11th century, the town began to expand and the fortress was turned into a collegiate church in 1099.

One of the four main entrances left to get inside of the city. Check it out.

All around Alquézar they have these things called callizos. Basically additions to the houses that added even more space. They say that what you could do was walk from one end of the town to the other without ever touching the ground.

During the Middle Ages the idea of witches really scared a lot of people and as a form of protection, wild boars ???? hooves were placed above the entrances of many homes to keep their spells away. You can still find some of these hanging on houses!

The thing you have to do is visit the Collegiate Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was remodeled in the 16th century but was originally consecrated in the 11th century. It’s cloister dates to the 14th century and has some really great artwork within. Tours are lead daily throughout at a price of just 2.5€!

What you’ll find on the inside is a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and even Mudéjar style architecture, something not very common in a lot if these churches in the area.

Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed a little tour of Alquezar. If you liked the video don’t forget to hit the thumbs up and subscribe for more videos about some of Spain’s best villages and towns!

ALQUEZAR SPAIN | Most Beautiful villages of Spain | Alquézar, Aragon

One of Los Pueblos Más Bonitos de España, located within a nature reserve at the foothills of the Pyrenees, Alquézar in Huesca province is one of the top places to visit in Spain.

The village is especially beautiful and rightfully earns is designation as one of the most beautiful villages in the world. Alquézar is built on a backdrop of gorges and canyons that connect to the Northern Spain mountains. Beautifully colored stone gives the buildings of the village a special quality that camouflage it perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

It lies in the center of a Triangle in between Zaragoza, Andorra and Barcelona and is easy accessed from all 3 of them.

Alquézar has been well kept and the buildings are in top notch shape. The pride of being a beautiful village shows, as streets and structures are well kept unlike some villages that are falling apart.

Highly recommended as a place to go for a picnic or to go canyoning.
There are some super epic hiking trails that bring you through the canyons and close to the cliffs and is a fantastic place for nature lovers, photographers and hikers.

On route through the Templar castles of Aragon
Get ready to discover the seven castles of Aragon where the Knights Templar were present between the 12th and 14th centuries. Visiting these places is a journey through the history of Aragon and the military and political movements that took place during this period.
The Order of the Temple was one of the most powerful and influential military monastic orders of Catholicism in the Middle Ages. It originated in France, but spread throughout much of the world, partly thanks to the crusades and its support to different monarchies. One of them was the Aragonese, so the Knights Templar had an important presence in our Community. Given their status as warrior-monks, it was common for them to be given castles from which they collaborated in the defense of the territory. Today we propose a journey through the Aragonese fortresses where they were present; many of them are only ruins and others have already disappeared, but their stories leave evidence of the Templar presence in Aragon.
This fortress is of Muslim origin, but, after being reconquered, it was ceded to the Order of the Temple in 1143. They added walls, towers, stables, a refectory and dormitories to turn it into a barracks. A transformation that can still be appreciated in the visits to the castle. You can tour all these rooms and see inside, for example, the Tower of James I, the place where the young prince lived while he was trained by the Knights Templar as one of them, until, at the age of 9, he had to leave the fortress.

After the order was declared outlawed in the early 14th century, the castle held out thanks to its strategic location and the ease of defending its walls, but the defenders finally surrendered the square on May 24, 1309.

As the most important place for the order in our Community, and the best preserved, the interior of the castle houses an interpretation center dedicated to the Templars.

Carcassonne, France, walking the medieval wall

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Carcassonne is a very special medieval town up on a hill in southwest France with a castle, and a fortified double wall going all the way around it. We are going to take you on a walk along the entire length of those walls in the old fortified town of Carcassonne.
There cannot be very many places in the world that produce so profound an effect upon the imagination and the sense of beauty and history as the old walled town of Carcassonne, especially when you are walking along its wall stepping back into the 13th century.
Here's a rapid-fire history of Carcassonne:
People have lived in this area for thousands of years. The Romans arrived in the first century BC and establish the city, they built a wall around it, and fortifications and palaces; the Roman Empire fell; the Visigoths took over; the French came in, the Muslims invaded, but stayed just for a few decades. A thousand years ago the Trencavel Viscount dynasty gained control and stayed for two centuries. They were displaced by the French under King Louis IX around the year 1200 and from that point on it was all France all the time.
By 1700, Carcassonne lost its strategic position guarding the border with Spain, which was moved further south. Their main industry became the manufacture of textiles, which later failed after competition from abroad and the place began to decline. People moved out. The buildings began to fall down and the French government decided to demolish the whole thing in the mid-19th century, but the people reacted and a conservation movement grew. It was rescued, renovated and rebuilt. Tourists began to arrive and enjoy it early in the 20th century and since then its popularity has constantly grown, with currently over 2 million visitors in the average year, becoming one of the world's great historic sites.
There's a tall inner wall, and a lower outer wall providing two layers of protection for the old medieval city.
As you walk along on top of the wall you also get nice views looking out at the city beyond and some beautiful landscapes of vineyards, olive groves and green rolling hills.
We’re going to start our walk around the walls at one of the few openings in the massive defensive wall. You'll see this complicated entrance solve the problem of how do you get through a wall while keeping the attackers out.
Within the walls we have an actual functioning town with shops, there are several small hotels. and 50 homes for the local residents as well, with a small plaza in the center hosting some outdoor terrace restaurants and a vast pedestrian zone that you want to explore, which we've shown you and other movies about Carcassonne but in this program we are focusing on the castle and the wall.
