Welcome to Molėtai - the amazing lake district in Lithuania. It is famous for Labanoras and Asveja regional parks, both having amazing lakes, vast forests and local sights to see. But here we can see much more than the lakes. It is home to the Astronomical observatory with the largest telescope in the northern Europe and ethno cosmology museum where we can get a close up of what humanity knows about space. ????✨????????????
It is quite close to Vilnius, so I was lucky to be able to come here a few times before finishing this video, as each place I visited was great and I've spent a lot of time at each of them, not wanting to leave ????
My tip for coming here would be to choose one or 2 places in the district for one day and not to hurry ????

Molėtai - here everything is real!
From Vilnius, within 40 kilometers towards the Eastern Aukštaitija, one crosses a threshold into the land of lakes and tranquility - Molėtai. Unspoilt nature and unique landscape allure tourists to this spot. 300 lakes lie amongst the forests that occupy a quarter of Molėtai territory. The longest lake in Lithuania Asveja is here, the place keeps legacy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Part of Molėtai district area falls within the territory of the Asveja and Labanoras regional parks.
One of the most interesting places in the area - Lithuanian Museum of Ethno cosmology, the only one in Europe. Labanoras tower, 36 meters tall, the tallest tower built in the territory of protected areas in Lithuania, lures tourists to climb it up and enjoy the amazing vistas of Labanoras woods and lakes. The fish soup is a must-eat local delicacy which tourists can taste in the courtyard of the Fishing Museum. The open door of Alanta Manor welcomes tourists, and various religious stories hover under the vaults of the Videniškiai Monastery Museum.
Cafes serve traditional Lithuanian dishes, local beer and kvass. Professionals organize pastime activities. Accommodation for tourists is provided in hotels, recreational and guesthouses, rural tourism sites, camping and campgrounds. Life in Molėtai district becomes especially alive during the traditional events.

Pakruojis manor and district travel guide | Lithuania
Welcome to Pakruojis - the time machine to 19 century in Lithuania. While the district is small, it is very well known around the country for its large manor house - which is almost like a theme park for old times.
The manor probably best be visited during the summer, but early autumn was great as well. If you want to stay in the hotel book in advance. I got one of the smallest rooms at last minute ????

Travel to Mažeikiai - remote Samogitian land in Lithuania | Travel guide
Welcome Mažeikiai district, Lithuania, one of the furthest places to go to from Vilnius. It's worth getting there, as the district has plenty of interesting sights to see: the only in Lithuania Gramophone museum, authentic XIX century pharmacy - museum, the home of the pioneer of Lithuanian aviation, the beautiful Renavas manor house and much more!
Mažeikiai district really impressed me, even though it was so far to drive to. It took me 2 days to see all the sights and I think it would be a great addition to a trip through Samogitia, combined with the nearby Akmenė district or Samogitia capital Telšiai.

Get a little glimpse of our trip to Moletai, the Lithuanian lakes area. Our lovely hosts did everything to expose us to some of the region's assets: 300 (!) Lakes, islands, forests, parks, beautiful homesteads, fascinating attractions, restaurants, and more.
Since then, my mind has been filled with blue and green colors, vast spaces, endless beauty, and a unique soft and golden light.
This trip was also full of adrenaline: a night out, ATV, helicopter flight, and Suktinis - the Lithuanian liquor (just a little). But also great food, and lots of talented people, who opened their homes and their hearts to us.
So how could we not fall in love? I'm sure you'll fall in love as soon as you get to Moletai!

Danny Slant wakes up at 6:30 AM at Molėtai Lithuania in his hotel, Gerugnė Hotel. Weather forecast says heavy rain today starting at 8:15am. At 8:10 am the rain starts coming down. leaves the hotel and the lady is super friendly . heading south on Lithuania Highway 172 towards Giedraičiai, Lithuania. starts raining again, so he puts on his high visibility bright green neon rain gear, hi-vis gear. At 9am he sings his daily improv rock song. Please put your answers in the comments. Stops at MTM Molėtų Technikos Muziejus to look at the old soviet style auto vehicles. stops at Giedraičių Šv. Baltramiejaus bažnyčia Saint Bartholomew church in Giedraičiai, Lithuania. sees a giant stork bird fly across the road. stops and attends Sunday church services at Paberžė Lithuania Church of Jesus' Heart
Paberžės Švč. Jėzaus Širdies bažnyčia. starts pouring rain again after the church service, gets to main highway A14 in Raudondvaris Lithuania , but will not ride his bicycle on the main highway too fast and dangerous. put on the James Brown mega remix on his earbuds and pedals off to small rocky and dirt roads to bypass the main highway. goes through the villages of Paraudondvariai, Žudiškės, Riešė, and Didžioji Riešė. finally makes it to the city limits of Vilnius, Lithuania. stops at hesburger for lunch. has another cheeseburger and french fries, old Lithuanian man smokes a cigarette and looks at my bicycle. follows the bike path along a14 highway, until he gets closer to Old Town Vilnius and then takes city street all the way to old town . goes past museums and St. Anne's Church Vilniaus Šv. Onos bažnyčia. finally arrives at Velloccino bicycle shop in Old Town Paupys Vilnius. Bike mechanic puts Zundapp bicycle into the bike box. Hostess coffee shop woman gives me a cup of tea and cookies. They were both so very friendly and nice to me. here is their website .. Then I book a guesthouse apartment called the Love Birds Nook in Paupys. nice modern nicely decorated apartment with wifi and cool Milos Forman movie posters on the wall, one flew over the cuckoos nest. Go shopping at Rimi grocery store, get oreo cookies, milk , pepsi, fanta soda for snacks, use the automated self check out successfully, walk back to the guesthouse apartment, stopping to look at restaurants and businesses around the Paupio Turgus then call it a night. today's bicycle riding statistics are 51 miles / 82 kilometers distance. 5 hours 19 minutes 28 seconds riding time. average speed 9.57 mph. max speed 27.77 mph, total trip distance 435 miles / 700 kilometers!! wow that is impressive for 6 straight days of riding. that is averaging 73 miles / 113 kilometers per day! total riding time from Tallinn Estonia to Vilnius Lithuania was 43 hours and 16 minutes. #estonia #latvia #lithuania #bicycleride .

Molėtai Astronomical Observatory
The old astronomical observatory of Vilnius University, opened in 1753, and the new University observatory near Vingis Park, built in 1921, gradually appeared inside the city of Vilnius where conditions turned out to be unsatisfactory for astronomical observations. In 1969, a new observatory was started[1] in the Molėtai district, about 70 km north of Vilnius. It is built on the Kaldiniai Hill just near the small village of Kulionys, about 10 km from the town of Molėtai. In the fall of 1969, the first 25 cm diameter telescope of the Molėtai Astronomical Observatory (MAO) was mounted. Later on, it was placed to the 35/51 cm Maksutov telescope. In 1974 and 1991, the reflecting telescopes of 63 cm and 165 cm diameters were put into operation.
Equipment
MAO currently has three research telescopes:
35 cm Maksutov telescope (f/3.5), which replaced MAO's first 25 cm telescope in 1975,
63 cm Cassegrain telescope,
165 cm Ritchey–Chrétien telescope, which MAO claims is the largest in Northern Europe (excluding Britain).

Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology
Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology is one of the mostly visited places in Lithuania by the tourists from abroad. It was established in Molėtai district, near Kulioniai village, a little farther from Molėtai Astronomical Observatory, close to the mound. Museum of Ethnocosmology is also called astronomical pavilion of special purpose, since its three constitutive parts – underground gallery with five halls, observation tower with a telescope and an outer exhibition create an impression of a powerful construction.
