A Journey through Rural Lesotho | Travel Documentary

Lesotho Kingdom in the Sky. On this episode of Adventure Calls we travel through Rural Lesotho in a rented 4WD Nissan which had been outfitted for true adventure. We would go horse trekking deep in the Lesotho mountains, visit one of the world tallest waterfalls and drive through the roughest terrains imaginable towards South Africa. We also got an opportunity to donate school materials which was donated by fans, friends and family.

You can learn more about the Malealea Development Trust here where you can also donate to those in need

Lesotho was our very first travel documentary that we filmed.

Lesotho is a fantastic place to visit and a place we highly recommend. If you stay longer and plan to drive around the more rural areas you should highly consider bringing or renting a good 4WD car (the cheapest and easiest option is in Johannesburg, South Africa). Many places are inaccessible without.

We hope you will enjoy this video and please subscribe to our channel for more adventures around the world. Please leave any comments and questions below. We love to interact with our viewers :)

A huge thanks to Darren Lowe for composing our theme music tracks. Fantastic job my friend.

Thanks to Marconi De Morais for helping with the final audio.

Discover Lesotho the Mountain Kingdom of Africa | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids

Lesotho is a small landlocked country nestled between the Drakensberg and Maloti mountain ranges and it is completely surrounded by South Africa. Officially a Kingdom, previously known as Basutoland, and a place that we left with the regret of not staying for longer.

Green valleys, sharp mountains, rivers, nature reserves and several national parks make Lesotho a natural wonder worth exploring by any traveler. We were surprised to learn that this country is one of the 3 remaining Kingdoms in Africa (the others being Morocco and Swaziland) even though it declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966.

The name Lesotho stands for “mountain kingdom” and that’s not a surprise as nearly ⅔ of the country consists of mountains. This country is also the proud owner of the highest low point in the world which is estimated at 1,400 meters above sea level.

Enjoy the video!

Semonkong's Maletsunyane Falls (Best Waterfall in Lesotho!)

???? June 2016 ▶️ Lesotho is certainly one of the lesser visited countries in Southern Africa, but it does boost a few very cool spots! The best waterfall in Lesotho is probably Semonkong's Maletsunyane Falls. The water plunges down 192m from a plateau, presenting some very beautiful landscapes sights from the viewpoint. Don't forgot to like and leave a comment if you like this short video on Lesotho????

SANI PASS & Wild Camping in Lesotho | Overland Honeymoon: Ep.4

We tackled the bucket list pass, Sani Pass. It was an absolutely amazing place to be, the views from here are spectacular it feels like you are nestled in between all the beauty and hugged by the mountains.
Once conquered, we had a local Maluti Beer at the highest pub in Africa. The views from up here were breathtaking.

Then we took the road through Lesotho, our first night we wild camped just outside of Mokhotlong - we were greeted by a friendly local and had a peaceful night here. On our second night we opted to stay at a guest house, because of the heavy rainfall predicted - and so happy we did. View our next episode to see how we travel through the wet and rainy Lesotho - The Kindom in the Sky... (coming soon)

Driving into Mokhotlong

Kingdom of Lesotho

Lesotho, a high-altitude, landlocked kingdom encircled by South Africa, is crisscrossed by a network of rivers and mountain ranges including the 3,482m-high peak of Thabana Ntlenyana.

On the Thaba Bosiu plateau, near Lesotho's capital, Maseru, are ruins dating from the 19th-century reign of King Moshoeshoe I.

Thaba Bosiu overlooks iconic Mount Qiloane, an enduring symbol of the nation’s Basotho people.

Lesotho Mountains & South African Plains

In January 2020 we flew into Johannesburg looking for advneture. We visited our friends in Lesotho for a week and then spent the rest or our time as tourists in South Africa.

We witnessed breathtaking views, made new friends, ate lots of meat, saw some incredible wildlife, experienced gastro with our friends (bonding experience for sure) explored quaint towns, ate more meat, played with the local children, and hiked mountains.

Definitely one of our favourite places in the world! Can't wait to do it again.

Lesotho Highlands Tour 5th February 2018

First day of 3-day road trip through Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. Around midday we departed Maseru north to Leribe, where we visited a local craft centre and school. After snack lunch at northern town of Butha-Buthe our drive then continued in easterly direction up the Hololo River valley to climb into mountains at 2,820m high Moteng Pass. From there we traversed the 3,000 metre high 46 kms long Roof of Africa road past the Afriski mountain resort at the 3,222 metre Mahlasela Pass, & further south past Letseng Diamond Mine before descending into the deep valleys to small town of Mapholaneng, and further on east towards Mokhotlong. From there the highway passes through small town of Tlokoeng and soon descends down to a bridge crossing the great Senqu River of Lesotho. Here the scenery is breathtaking as you look down onto where the Senqu meets other great rivers in a large basin of gorges before heading south then west into South Africa to become the Orange (Gariep) River. After a brief visit to Mokhotlong we turned back & continued south along the recently constructed A31 highway following the Sehonghong River Valley until a final climb over the 3,240 metre high Koti-Sephola Pass & down to Sani Flats. A short 10km drive further on saw our arrival in darkness at Sani Mountain Lodge by 8pm, where we had a meal & stayed overnight at the nearby backpackers hostel.

Explore Semonkong Waterfall & Dinosaur Footprints in Lesotho | Overland Honeymoon Ep. 6

Our final chapter...
We spent our last 2 nights in Lesotho at Semonkong Lodge and hiked to the magnificent waterfall. Just before we crossed the border into South Africa we stopped and viewed 230milion-year-old dinosaur footprints in Quthing. Our journey through Lesotho came to an end as we drove off to The Nest in Aliwal North.

The next morning we packed up and drove through the beautiful landscapes of the Karoo, and witnessed an incredible thunderstorm. We booked in for the night at Abrahamskraal before we head home the next morning.

We had an incredible journey, looking forward to our next trip, and can't wait to see where the wind takes us this time.
