Exploring Mandalay Myanmar - Things to Do & See - 2023

Mandalay မန္တလေ is the second largest city in Myanmar, after Yangon. Located on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, 631 km north of Yangon, the city has a population of 1.2 million people.

Mandalay was founded in 1857 by King Mindon, replacing Amarapura as the new royal capital of the Konbaung dynasty. It was Burma's final royal capital before the kingdom's annexation by the British Empire in 1885. Under British rule, Mandalay remained commercially and culturally important despite the rise of Yangon, the new capital of British Burma. The city suffered extensive destruction during the Japanese conquest of Burma in the Second World War. In 1948, Mandalay became part of the newly independent Union of Burma.

Today, Mandalay is the economic centre of Upper Myanmar and considered the center of Burmese culture.

There is a lot to see from markets to temples. It’s relatively unknown to most toursits and off the normal tourist trail. It’s a real hidden gem and the gateway to other places in Myanmar like Bagan or Mingun that are worth seeing.

Pigeon Blood Rubies from Burma documentary of Patrick Voillot

English :
Deutsch :
French :
Italian :
Spanish :
Chinese :
Russian :
Japanese :
Pigeon Blood Red Rubies from Burma are the rarest, most expensive rubies in the world. The best come from Mogok, a town in the Mandalay Division of Myanmar, near the Chinese border, and closed to all foreigners.

This film takes you into the heart of the region described in Joseph Kessel’s famous mid-twentieth century novel, The Valley of Rubies.

The adventure begins in Rangoon, visiting one of the greatest of Buddhist Temples, the Shwedagon Pagoda, where by reaching the summit; you will have the privilege of contemplating the priceless diamonds and precious jewels adorning the top.

The next part will take you to Mandalay, which has long been host to the Kings of Burma. This is the city where the white marble sculptors work to create the Buddhist monuments.
Then further north, you will enter into the sanctuary of jewels: Mogok, Burma. Many have desired entry, few have had the opportunity.

In this movie, you will discover the traditions and ancestral myths of the inhabitants in this country. As close to mining as you've ever been; you will enter into the galleries leading to the dark bowels of the earth where miners dig the walls with dynamite. You will also be among those who ‘sort’ at the end of each day in the alluvium screen giants. Before your very eyes, miners will extract stones of the most beautiful of red colored stones, called pigeon blood rubies. These gemstones are of exceptional rarity. The Burmese say that seeing one is like seeing the face of God.

You will enter into a world of secrets: mines operated by the military, wealthy merchants who have gems of inestimable value, and finally, markets where the only food for sale are gemstones.

Then you will be invited into the most prohibited of annual auctions in the world, the Emporium in Yangon. Official sales of rubies, jade, pearls and other precious stones from Burma were made in this incredible building.

Finally, you can muse over the creations of jeweler Fred Place Vendôme in Paris.

Top 10 Hotels around Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon

In this video we countdown the Top 10 hotels surrounding the scenic Kandawgyi Lake in Yangon. Kandawgyi Lake is a popular place for tourists to visit due to it's beautiful landscape and historic architecture - such as the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda. This video seeks to guide potential visitors to the hotels that are the highest rated by former guests. To determine the rank of each hotel in the top 10 list we have used the ratings from the booking site agoda. Besides looking at the raw rating we have also weighted it according to how many reviews it is based on. Ratings that are only based on a handful of reviews are less reliable than reviews based on thousands of reviews.

The hotels mentioned in the video are listed here in alphabetical order. If you want to find out more information such as current prices you can click the links for each hotel below. The links will take you to the Agoda website. If you book a hotel via one of these links I earn a small commission but you do not pay anything extra.

Precious Gemstones of Myanmar

MYANMAR---The gems of Myanmar are ruby, sapphire and jade. It is especially rubies that have made the reputation of Burma abroad. Since the days of the Burmese kings, Burma has always operated its mines and discovered beautiful stones. In Burma, ruby mines are located in several areas including: Maishu, Mogok, Pyinlon, Namyar, and Sakyin. The high-quality Mogok ruby is the most sought-after, and is among the finest in the world. The “pigeon blood” color of rubies is the most popular and expensive.

Exploring Freezing Cold Place in Myanmar, Mogok(Ruby Land)

The place where best rubies come from. The town surrounded by mountains. The town which is considered as Shangri-la. Now, I am about to take you there.

More about the Ruby Land here :

Mogok : Back to the Nature (Beauty of Myanmar)

This is the photos I took when I was in Mogok back in March 2020 during the start of pandemic time. Every day, I went to trekking to exotic mountains and forests. This photos are some of the highlight of moments with my cousins and friends.

Mogok(Ruby Land) , Myanmar(Burma)

Welcome to Ruby land. Long closed to foreigners, the ruby-mining town of Mogok is now open to visitors with the necessary permits. With 90% of the world's rubies coming from Myanmar, Mogok and the surrounding area is a key hub of the ruby trade, with much of the mining done by hand.
.
As well as rubies, you'll find sapphires, emeralds, and lapis lazuli and other semi-precious gems on sale in the markets. Many of the traders are Chinese or Indian. If you're interested in purchasing any stones, be sure you know what you are doing, as this isn't a place for rookie gem-buyers.
.
In addition to rubies, Mogok has a beautiful mountain setting with a significant Shan population, as well as Palaung and Lisu. There are a number of eye-catching pagodas and a WWII cemetery containing the remains of British soldiers who died fighting nearby.
.
.
★★★Important Note:
Foreign travelers are currently not permitted to visit Mogok. Travel permits are not being issued at this time.
.
★★★ Breaking News :
Mogok is again CLOSED for tourist because of security reason on the road (June 2017)

Inle Lake Tour | Wonders of MYANMAR

A beautiful, natural, peaceful lake so many visitors come to enjoy. Inle Lake was one of our Myanmar highlights as well. Yes, we say that a lot – guilty! We decided to take it easy towards the end of our trip so we planned to spend 3 days around the lake, enjoying the laid back life and exploring the nearby places. There are many restaurants and Spa’s in the city so Inle Lake is the perfect place to slow it down a bit.

Solo travelling in Mandalay, Myanmar | 2-day Weekend Trip from Yangon | Travel Vlog

During my 2-month internship stint in Myanmar, I embarked on a 10 hours bus ride from Yangon to spend the weekend in the city of Mandalay by myself. It was a jam-packed but fun-filled 2 days spent there. To me, Myanmar felt like one of the safest countries for a female to solo travel in, and I really enjoyed my time in Mandalay.

2 days is simply not enough to cover the city of Mandalay and I probably only covered 25% of what's there to do there. But do enjoy the video anyways and perhaps it'll give you some inspiration on what to do when you get the chance to visit Mandalay.
