We made a HUGE mistake when we visited Bogota, and it turned into the most memorable day we could imagine, Follow along as we inadvertently go on a religious pilgrimage to the top of Monserrate, a mountain overlooking Bogota, Colombia. We'll tell you why - despite the hundreds of steps and 2,000 feet you have to climb - this is the ONE place you should visit if you find yourself in Bogota.
As Bob Ross would say, there are no mistakes... just happy accidents. This was our happiest accident yet!

Amazon Jungle Hike to Cerro La Flecha, Colombia
On a trip to Mitú, Vaupés, Colombia, I took a 30-minute carrito taxi ride outside of the town to the Ceima Cachivera community. Here you can hike to the top of Cerro La Flecha and get an awesome panoramic view of the surrounding Amazon Rainforest. Make sure you bring water and wear insect repellant.

Colombia VLOG - My favorite Colombian Desserts - Villa de Leyva, Colombia
When I visit Villa de Leyva, Colombia I always have to stop by el Museo del chocolate for a delicious Miljoha and at Lupita for an Oblea. Those two are my favorite desserts of snacks in Colombia.
A milhoja is a puff pastry dessert similar to a Napoleon. It is filled with custard or cream and caramel. In El Museo del Chocolate they add a slice of cheese to represent a traditional article of clothing of the region called la ruana.
At Lupita, we enjoy Obleas. An oblea is a wafer type cookie filled generally with caramel although you can order it with different fillings.
These two desserts are perfect for las onces. Las onces happens between 5-7 pm in Colombia and it's a time to get together to enjoy a dessert or a cup of coffee in the company of family and friends.

AMAZON REGION - REGION AMAZONAS
Mitú, the capital of the Vaupes department, is one of the most remote birding destinations in Colombia. This hotspot for avian diversity is located in the Amazon
region, but contains unique vegetation, topography and avifauna than the rest of the Colombian Amazon. A mosaic of habitats can be found in close vicinity of the town, including unique white-sand forest, isolated mountains, tropical lowland forest, and savannas.
The rarities of the Mitu region include Amazonian Umbrellabird, Paradise Tanager, Orinoco Piculet, Gray-bellied Antbird, White-plummed Antbird, Brown-headed Greenlet, Sungrebe, Orange-chested and Black-headed Parrots, Paradise and Bronzy Jacamar, Purple-breasted Cotinga, Black Manakin, Bar-bellied Woodcreeper, Fuscous Flycatchar, White-naped Seedeater, Plumbeous Euphonia and Red-fanned Parrot. A hike along a pipeline trail that goes through white sand forest and mature lowland forest can yield species such as Tawny-tufted Toucanet, Black Bushbird, Pompadour Cotinga, Guianan
Cock-of-the-rock, Pavonine Quetzal, and Brown-banded and Yellow-crowned Manakin.

One of the greatest birds of this trip... very close!.. nearby a territory of an active Saffron-crested Tyrant-manakin (Neopelma chrysocephalum)... good combo!
This video was made during a FANTASTIC trip we did to the white sand forests of SW Colombia in Mitu near the Brazilian border. We went there to help a bit in the process of a brilliant course (Bird watching in an inter-cultural context) that is being offered for local birding guides from indigenous communities around Mitu. This course by SENA/Tropenbos is directed by our mate Jorge Gonzalez... and believe me, he is been doing an awfully good job there! - Local guides have shared their knowledge about fruiting and flowering times, detailed cartography of the communities, times for local phenomena as army ants swarms or flying ants eaten by raptors, among others, they been sharing detailed info on who to find target birds, specially the Orinoco-Negro White-Sand Forest EBA ones . They also have shared and compared how birds evolved and where they came from, and what they represent, for each different indigenous community. It is a beautiful work going on down there in Mitu with these local guides.
ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THESE GUYS IF YOU ARE VISITING MITU... THEY ARE THE REAL BIRD AND NATURE LOCAL GUIDES LIVING IN THE COMMUNITIES AROUND MITU AND THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND AND GET EXPEDITE PERMITS GRANTED TO VISIT EVERY INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY. (There will be a web site available soon!.. meanwhile, PLEASE feel free to contact me).
They are very knowledgeable and not only local guides showing you the trail!
