Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Briones

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Briones

Briones is a village in the province and autonomous community of La Rioja, Spain. The municipality covers an area of 37.72 square kilometres (14.56 sq mi) and as of 2011 had a population of 873 people. The name Briones comes from the Berones, ancient inhabitants of La Rioja, but, according to a lithic site from the Bronze Age found in the path of the Santos Mártires chapel, Briones had inhabitants before the Beroners. The Albedense Chronicle (c. 883) says that Alfonso I of Asturias cut down the village of Briones and six other municipalities.

Besides, the chronicle also mentions the famous expedition led by Alphonso I, king of Asturias all the way down the Ebro river in 740. In that chronicle, these destroyed villages are mentioned: Mirandam (now Miranda de Ebro), Revedencam, Carbonariam, Abeicam (Ábalos, where the expedition crossed the Ebro river), Brunes (this might be Briones but it is uncertain), Cinissariam (now Cenicero) and Alesanco.

Briones was under Saracen control until the late 9th century, and it belonged to King Ordoño II of León since the beginnings of the 10th century. Briones also belonged to the Castilla County, which had been repopulated with Basques and was a frontier between Castilla and Navarra. After Sancho el de Peñalén was murdered the 4th of June 1076, Alfonso VI took over La Rioja and Briones became part of the Haro's Signiory.

Fernando III named Don Diego López III de Haro, the monarch's nephew, first Lord of Briones. In 1240 Don Diego López rebelled against Fernando III and found shelter in Briones. The king enclosed the town and made him prisoner. Since then, Briones belonged to the crown. On the 18 January 1256, Alfonso X of Castile gave Briones the regional laws from Vitoria, as a guarantee of the Castillian repopulation. In 1293 Sancho IV gave Briones royal privilege. During the Basquisation in 1536 there were thirty Basque surnames in Briones.

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Logrono

Logroño is a city in northern Spain, on the Ebro River. It is the capital of the province of La Rioja. The population of the city in 2008 was 153,736 while the metropolitan area included nearly 197,000 inhabitants. The city is a centre of the trade in Rioja wine, for which the area is noted, and produces wood, metal and textile products.

Logroño is located in the northern region of La Rioja, on the river Ebro, 384 metres (1,260 feet) above sea level. The Camino de Santiago passes through the city. The city lies 152 km (94 mi) from Bilbao, 172 km (107 mi) from Zaragoza, 336 km (209 mi) from Madrid and 468 km (291 mi) from Barcelona.

Logroño was an old settlement, first of the Romans, under the name of Vareia, a commercial port, and then of the Celts. From the 10th century, possession of Logroño was disputed between the kings of Navarre and those of Castile; the region was finally annexed to Castile. The name is a combination of le and Groin, mashed together as Logroño over time. Alfonso VI of Castile granted Logroño in 1095 a charter of rights that served as a model for other Spanish cities. In 1609 and 1610 Logroño was the main seat of the Basque witch trials, part of the Spanish Inquisition.

Logroño is the shopping and financial capital of La Rioja. Its economy is heavily reliant on wine. It is twinned with Dunfermline, Darmstadt, Libourne, Dax, Rancagua, Ciudad de La Rioja, Brescia, Hagunia. The new airport Logroño-Agoncillo connects the city with Madrid and Barcelona.

Alot to see in Logrono such as :

Con-Catedral de Santa María de la Redonda
Iglesia (Church) de San Bartolomé
Iglesia de Santiago
Iglesia de Palacio
Museo de La Rioja
Parlamento de La Rioja, an old factory of the tabacalera, the national tobacco company.
Muralla del Revellín
Fuente (Fountain) de la Gran Vía in which royal figures with a connection to either Logroño or La Rioja are represented in bronze. Because the figures are placed looking towards the public and so large torrents of water pour down behind them, the fountain is commonly known as the one with wet backs.
Peña Bajenza, a massive rock formation which can be seen from the town.
Bridge of Mantible, in the El Cortijo district. Constructed during the Roman era and declared Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category on January 25, 1983.

Tiny Tour | Lekeitio Spain | An absolute beauty in Basque Country 2019 Autumn

Here I need to apologize for not being able to reach the island, the path is getting extremely slippery when getting close to the island and the water was constantly pushed onto the path. I really wanted to reach it, but sadly I had to give up.

Lekeitio (Spanish: Lequeitio) is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Basque Country, 53 km (33 mi) northeast from Bilbao. The municipality has 7,293 inhabitants (2005) and is one of the most important fishing ports of the Basque coast. Tourism has an important role during the summer seasons, when the town is a resort with one beach called Isunza and the nearby Carraspio beach in the town of Mendexa.

The town of Miranda del Castañar is labeled Historic-Artistic Grouping for being part of the Spanish national system of heritage listing.

The town of Miranda del Castanar is set on a mountainside and is encircled by a medieval wall with four gates. The current castle was rebuilt in the early 14th century over the remains of an older castle dating from the 12th.
