Cartagena Colombia is beautiful, but this day trip to Palenque the first free town in the Americas for Afro Colombians will change how you see things in Colombia.
San Basilio de Palenque is known to locals as Palenque or Palenge.
Just outside Cartagena is the first ‘free town’ in the Americas. Started by Benkos Biohó who helped Afro Colonbians flee slavery and recapture in Spanish colonial times. This Colombian city has been preserved and is famous for its music, culture, food and a language that is being preserved, which is a unique mix of African as its roots are in slavery combined with French Spanish and Portuguese - the languages of those that enslaved them.
Many tourists in Cartagena have no idea the story of the colourfully dressed women, the Palenqueras, who sell fruit in woven baskets on their head while others sell Colombian sweets like cocadas, caballitos, cheese and pan de coco.

Guatapé Colombia Vlog: Things To Do & Drone Footage (DJI Mavic Pro)
Hi, I'm Miranda and the purpose of this video is to share ideas for a fun, active & eco-friendly weekend in Guatapé, Colombia.
Guatapé is a small town located on the outskirts of Medellín, Colombia. It's perfect for a weekend getaway from the city! There are so many fun and eco-friendly things to do in Guatapé (in addition to climbing the 740 steps up the famous 650 ft. rock).
HOW TO GET FROM MEDELLÍN TO GUATAPÉ:
Buy a bus ticket from Terminale Norte in Medellín for around 13,500 COP. Guatapé is a 2-3 hour bus ride from there. We stayed at All In Hostel and absolutely loved it! They offer both dorms and private rooms & are located just outside of town but super close to the rock. Here you can rent kayaks and paddle boards and explore the lake area.
Guatapé Rock Entrance Fee 18,000 COP entrance per person.
A tuk tuk from town to the rock or from the hostel to town was around 8,000 COP.
I recommend going early in the morning before it gets packed with tourists.
Vegan & Vegetarian Food
Govinda’s is in town. It’s a vegan Hari Krishna restaurant. We enjoyed their delicious & affordable menú del dia.
Namaste is a vegetarian restaurant overlooking the lake and they have delicious food and desserts! The service is amazing and most dishes include a glass of red wine.
We couldn’t resist ziplining over the lake, which cost 13,000 COP per person. It’s a short, cheap but eco-friendly thrill.
