Drymen is a village in Stirling district in central Scotland. Drymen lies to the west of the Campsie Fells and enjoys views to Dumgoyne on the east and to Loch Lomond on the west. The Queen Elizabeth Forest reaches down to the village edge, and the whole area is part of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park (the first National Park in Scotland).
It is often used as an overnight stop for hikers on the West Highland Way, and forms the western end of the Rob Roy Way. There are a couple of pubs and a walkers' shop. The Clachan pub claims to be the oldest pub in Scotland and to have a connection with the family of Rob Roy.
Despite the growth in the numbers of villagers commuting to Glasgow to work, there remains an agricultural tradition in the area. Every year, in early summer, an agricultural show is held in the fields around the Endrick Water. The Scottish family name Drummond is derived from the Scottish Gaelic form of the village's name.

Thank you for joining on this Scottish hiking adventure along The West Highland Way. Tiring as 7 days of walking was on my body, it did my pilgrim soul wondrous good!
The West Highland Way of Scotland is a 96 mile walking route that spans from the town of Milngavie outside Glasgow all the way up to Fort William in the Highlands. Taking anywhere from 4 to 8 days, this pilgrimage meanders along the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, through rugged glens, and over misty hills, landscapes transforming the soul with their splendour.
There's something so therapeutic about being out in nature, especially with such breath-taking landscapes to enjoy.
On another note, thank you for your patience with this video! I always forget that a video two or three times as long as my usual ones will take two or three times longer to edit. From gorgeous drone shots to the best I could do with my phone camera, I hope you enjoy!

So much to do around the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Drymen is a few minutes drive to the Queen of Scottish Lochs. Hill walking , climbing , the West Highland Way , Ben Lomond , golfing , fishing , sailing , boating , tourism. So much more besides. And in Drymen there are a number of places at which to stay and dine , including Hotels & Bed and Breakfasts.

The Milngavie Reservoirs is a popular place for Glaswegians looking to get outside of the city for countryside walks. We usually just start the walk at the western side of Mugdock Reservoir where there is a car park. Then follow the footpath round to Craigmaddie Reservoir, around the Water Treatment Works before returning to the car park, which takes about an hour. The paths also take you through attractive woodlands to complement the views across the reservoir and countryside. The area is quite exposed and windy, even on a sunny day.
This place is one of the best, so peaceful and the views are amazing! It’s ideal for dog walkers as many of the people who visit are doing the same thing. It’s also an excellent spot for a quiet stroll or to squeeze in some running and burn some calories before you start the day.
Milngavie Reservoirs | Mugdock Reservoir | Craigmaddie Reservoir | Glasgow | Scotland
A reservoir lying within East Dunbartonshire, but on the border Stirling Council Area, the Mugdock Reservoir lies to the south of Mugdock and immediately to the northeast of Milngavie. Impounded by an earth embankment dam, it opened in 1859 and extends to an area of 22 ha (54 acres). This is the oldest of three reservoirs in the vicinity which draw water from Loch Katrine and supply it to Glasgow, the others being Craigmaddie Reservoir and Bankell Reservoir. These are at sufficient altitude that the water flows on to the city under gravity, without the need for pumps, having passed through Milngavie Water Treatment Works. Within Glasgow, water is stored in small local reservoirs, such as Cockmuir Reservoir in Springburn Park, and several prominent water towers. The scheme is operated by Scottish Water.
Mugdock reservoir, which was designed in 1856 and in use by 1860, was designed as the main storage area for the water from Loch Katrine, as part of the Glasgow Corporation Water Works (see below for significance of the scheme as a whole). It was designed to hold an 11-day supply of water so that the conduit could be closed for repairs. Craigmaddie reservoir was built as part of the duplication scheme of 1885. Geological problems made it considerably more difficult to build than Mugdock and defeated two different contractors before being finally completed by a third. Although the two reservoirs abut each other they are completely separate. The works for each reservoir involved realigning Mugdock Road to the east and the Strathblane turnpike road to the west. Boundary walls along both sides of Mugdock Road and Strathblane Road have matching architectural treatment. In places, the outer walls along these roads enclose minor structures and channels built as part of the scheme including masonry channels to divert water supply, and scour shafts. The straining wells, which were in use until 2007, filtered the water before it was piped to Glasgow. Overall, the two reservoirs and their related ancillaries are a fine example of civil engineering and municipal service provision. The reservoirs are located within a specially designed landscape setting which enhances their scenic and recreational value.

Fort William is a centre for hillwalking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and many other Munro mountains. It is also known for its nearby downhill mountain bike track. Fort William is the start/end of both the West Highland Way (Milngavie-Fort William) and the Great Glen Way (a walk/cycle way Fort William-Inverness).
Fort William lies at the southern end of the Great Glen, Fort William lies near the head of Loch Linnhe, one of Scotland's longest sea lochs, beside the mouth of the rivers Nevis and Lochy. They join in the intertidal zone and briefly become one river before discharging to the sea. The town and its suburbs are surrounded by picturesque mountains. It is also on the shore of Loch Eil. It is close to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, Glen Nevis and the town of Achnaphubuil, is on the opposite shore of the loch. When the railway opened to Fort William on 7 August 1894, the station was given prime position at the south end of the town. The consequence was that the town was separated from the lochside by railway tracks until the 1970s when the present by-pass was built, and the station was re-located to the north end.
The town of Fort William is centred on the High Street, which was pedestrianised in the 1990s. Off this there are several squares. Monzie Square (named after the Cameron Campbells of Monzie, Perthshire, former landowners in the town), Station Square, where the long-since demolished railway station used to be, Gordon Square (named for the Gordons, who owned land where the town now stands in the late 18th century, when the town was named Gordonsburgh), and Cameron Square — formerly known as Town Hall Square. There is also Fraser Square which is not so square-like since it now opens out into Middle Street but it still houses the Imperial Hotel.
The West Highland Line passes through Fort William. Owing to the difficult terrain in the area, the line from Glasgow, to the south, enters from the northeast. Trains from Glasgow to Mallaig, the terminus of the line, have to reverse at Fort William railway station.
Movies filmed in or near Fort William include Being Human, Braveheart, Highlander, Restless Natives, the Harry Potter series and Rob Roy. The TV series Rockface was filmed mainly around Fort William and some scenes of Monarch of the Glen were filmed around Lochaber although mostly near Newtonmore. Local Hero shot the internal Houston scenes in Fort William.

So this was total of 100 miles with almost 5200m Ascent, there was highs and lows for the past but not for humour and determination by team. As studied path prior to start of the task found the most easiest part was devils staircase and several other unexpected physical and emotional challenges which over come by stunning views all around you.
Getting to & from the route
The West Highland Way is traditionally walked from south to north (Milngavie to Fort William) but however you plan to tackle the route; there are plenty of options to get to both towns. The start of the route is marked with an obelisk on Douglas Street in the centre of Milngavie. The end of the route at Fort William is marked by a statue of a West Highland Way Walker in Gordon Square in the centre of the town.
The West Highland Way stretches 96 miles (154 Km) from Milngavie to Fort William, taking in a huge variety of scenery along the way, from countryside parks to loch-shores and open moorlands to steep mountains.
Normally the route is completed from south to north, the thinking behind this being the southern stages are easier and will prepare you for the more demanding northern stages.
The West Highland Way was Scotland's first long distance route and remains by far the most popular. Stretching for 151km from Milngavie on the edge of Glasgow to Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, the route offers a fabulous introduction to the Scottish Highlands. Those wanting to add an extra days walking could even begin in the heart of Glasgow, reaching Milngavie by following the Kelvin Walkway.
It offers tremendous variety, beginning in the pastoral landscapes beneath the Campsies, past the serene beauty of Loch Lomond, and on into increasingly rugged and majestic Highlands. It then crosses the vast, awe-inspiring expanse of Rannoch Moor, with a glimpse down Glencoe, before crossing the hills to lovely Loch Leven. The route finally reaches Fort William via beautiful Glen Nevis. The very keenest could continue from the town by walking the Great Glen Way, or the unofficial East Highland Way.
Due to the variety of distances involved, these sections should not necessarily be considered as a days activity. Planning of stage lengths should be based upon ability and fitness and the opportunities available to explore places of interest along the route. Okay, it's taken 15 years to get to this point, but here I am. I'm about to walk the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William. However, to up the ante a little, let's make it more difficult, by starting the walk on the banks of the River Clyde and finishing on the summit of Ben Nevis.
Along the way we will witness some of the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer, including lochs, moors, rugged mountains and glacial valleys. The route passes Conic Hill, Loch lomond, Inverarnan, Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, the Devil's Staircase, Kinlochleven and Fort William.
The West Highland Way can be completed in 5 stages, so my little Glasgow to Ben Nevis hike would be covered over 7 stages. I ain't no spring chicken any more, so how would I cope with days of punishment? What could possibly go wrong?

Fort William is the start/end of both the West Highland Way (Milngavie-Fort William) and the Great Glen Way (a walk/cycle way Fort William-Inverness).
Fort William lies at the southern end of the Great Glen, Fort William lies near the head of Loch Linnhe, one of Scotland's longest sea lochs, beside the mouth of the rivers Nevis and Lochy. They join in the intertidal zone and briefly become one river before discharging to the sea. The town and its suburbs are surrounded by picturesque mountains. It is also on the shore of Loch Eil. It is close to Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, Glen Nevis and the town of Achnaphubuil, is on the opposite shore of the loch. When the railway opened to Fort William on 7 August 1894, the station was given prime position at the south end of the town. The consequence was that the town was separated from the lochside by railway tracks until the 1970s when the present by-pass was built, and the station was re-located to the north end.
The town of Fort William is centred on the High Street, which was pedestrianised in the 1990s. Off this there are several squares. Monzie Square (named after the Cameron Campbells of Monzie, Perthshire, former landowners in the town), Station Square, where the long-since demolished railway station used to be, Gordon Square (named for the Gordons, who owned land where the town now stands in the late 18th century, when the town was named Gordonsburgh), and Cameron Square — formerly known as Town Hall Square. There is also Fraser Square which is not so square-like since it now opens out into Middle Street but it still houses the Imperial Hotel.
The West Highland Line passes through Fort William. Owing to the difficult terrain in the area, the line from Glasgow, to the south, enters from the northeast. Trains from Glasgow to Mallaig, the terminus of the line, have to reverse at Fort William railway station.
Movies filmed in or near Fort William include Being Human, Braveheart, Highlander, Restless Natives, the Harry Potter series and Rob Roy. The TV series Rockface was filmed mainly around Fort William and some scenes of Monarch of the Glen were filmed around Lochaber although mostly near Newtonmore. Local Hero shot the internal Houston scenes in Fort William.

WEST HIGHLAND WAY: Glasgow to Ben Nevis stage 2/7: Milngavie to Balmaha

Okay, it's taken 15 years to get to this point, but here I am. I'm about to walk the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William. However, to up the ante a little, let's make it more difficult, by starting the walk on the banks of the River Clyde and finishing on the summit of Ben Nevis.
Along the way we will witness some of the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer, including lochs, moors, rugged mountains and glacial valleys. The route passes Conic Hill, Loch lomond, Inverarnan, Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, the Devil's Staircase, Kinlochleven and Fort William.
The West Highland Way can be completed in 5 stages, so my little Glasgow to Ben Nevis hike would be covered over 7 stages. I ain't no spring chicken any more, so how would I cope with days of punishment? What could possibly go wrong?

This 10 mile walk starts in Ailsworth then heads through beautiful Yarwell, up through Wansford and back.
It’s a very pretty route, much of it passes alongside the river nene and you see Wansford and Yarwell lochs, Wansford station, and Yarwell mill.

West Highland Way Day 01 - Solo Hiking from Milngavie to Drymen
My attempt to hike the West Highland Way trail by myself in 7 days.
This was my first day of hiking the West Highland Way. The hike starts in Milngavie and I work my way to Drymen. The trail was mostly flat, but still enjoyable. It rained off and on most of the day and the trail was muddy in spots, but bearable. I started the trail in October so I didn't have to worry about midges which is why I choose this October to start the hike, but it was a bit cold and wet. Beautiful green hills and friendly people aplenty. I think most people camp on this trail since the United Kingdom has laws permitting people to camp at most open spaces. Very few hotels and B&Bs so book in advance.
