Experience the Beauty of Central Texas at Fort Parker State Park

Join us as we explore Fort Parker State Park near Mexia, TX. This Central Texas park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. It features tent and RV camping, screen shelters, cabins and group barracks. Fort Parker State Park sits on the Navasota River and Fort Parker Lake within an hour from Waco and less than 100 miles from Dallas.

In this video, we take you on a tour of Fort Parker State Park and share some of the unique features, the campgrounds, amenities and more. One quick clarification: Fort Parker Lake is completely within the state park, so you don't need a fishing license if you are fishing from a boat in the lake.

Fort Parker State Park is operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Ft. Parker State Park @ on the Navasota River. RV camping fishing hunting hiking biking

Fort Parker State Park is a Texas state park near Mexia and to Limestone County seat Groesbeck, Texas. The city of Mexia and three local landowners donated the land creating the park in 1935. From 1935 to 1942, Civilian Conservation Corps Company 3807 built roads, recreational facilities, the concession building and a 423-foot dam of limestone, concrete, and soil across the Navasota River, creating Lake Fort Parker. The park was dedicated by former Texas Governor Pat Neff and opened to the public in May 1941. Old Fort Parker, their spring is located on the left
Fort Parker State Park has three hike-and-bike trails: Springfield trail (1.5-mile loop), Navasota River Trail (0.5 mile one way), and Baines Creek Trail (2.5 miles one way). The Bur Oak Trail (0.5-mile loop) is a nature trail with an interpretive guide pamphlet available. Trees in the park include bur oak, water oak, blackjack oak, pecan, and eastern red cedar (juniper). Other plants that can be found are American beauty berry and sumac.
Inside the park is the Old Springfield Cemetery, all that remains of the once-thriving community of Springfield, Texas. Springfield was once the county seat of Limestone County and thrived during the 1840's and 1850's, but as men left for the Civil War, the town's businesses began to close. After the war, racial conflict and lawlessness occurred. The railroad passed Springfield by for the towns of Mexia and Groesbeck, and the town of Springfield disappeared. The Fort Parker Nature Center is open every weekend. Canoe, kayaks, and paddle boats are available for rental. Day use, overnight camping, group barracks, an activity center, and a picnic pavilion are all available for rent. The C.C.C. Company also rebuilt nearby Old Fort Parker, the site of the Fort Parker massacre, for the Texas Centennial observance in 1936. As an independent nonprofit, Old Fort Parker is not part of the state park.

Things to Do:

Enjoy swimming, fishing, hiking and biking, camping, picnicking, bird and nature watching, paddling and geocaching. Host your group gatherings here, as well. Fort Parker offers some of the best sunsets in Central Texas, so bring your camera!

Hiking and biking
Explore seven miles of trails on foot or bike. Learn about the plants in the park along the .6-mile Bur Oak Trail.

See many park highlights along the two-mile Springfield Trail: the Springfield Cemetery, the Navasota River Springs that feed the river, the dam built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and spring-fed Lake Springfield.

Fishing
Drop a hook in 750-acre Fort Parker Lake, three-acre Lake Springfield, or the Navasota River. Catch channel and blue catfish, white and black bass, and crappie.

No fishing license is needed to fish from shore on our lakes or the river, or from a boat on the lake. You will need a license to fish from a boat on the river.

We have two boat ramps (one on the river and one on Fort Parker Lake), two fishing piers and a fish cleaning station. We loan fishing gear for use in the park.

Get detailed fishing and lake information for Fort Parker Lake.

Paddling
Paddle Fort Parker Lake and the Navasota River by canoe or kayak. Take the 5.3-mile Limestone Bluffs Paddling Trail to experience both.

Bring your own or rent one of our watercraft (weather permitting).

If you are planning to rent our watercraft for a youth group, please fill out the youth group compliance form and bring a signed parental consent form for each minor.

Camping
Stay overnight at a campsite, screened shelter or cabin. Cabins don’t have beds or bathrooms but do have air-conditioning. Sites are scattered around the lake’s edge, and most are near a restroom with showers.

Group gatherings
Rent one of our group sites for your next reunion or summer camp out. The barracks complex has a dining hall, game room and dorms; it sleeps 86 people. We also have a recreation hall, pavilion and primitive group camp.

CCC
Men of the Civilian Conservation Corps built Fort Parker State Park. They constructed the dam that formed Fort Parker Lake and the buildings and roads in the park. Learn more on The Look of Nature: Fort Parker State Park.

Day Trip tp Tomball ???? (FULL EPISODE) S6 E13

THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS in October 2014 as part of Season 6. Some of the locations may have changed. Check for the most up-to-date information.

While the lights of Houston shine brightly, don’t let them outshine this small Texas town just 30 miles north. True, it’s had a number of names over the years (Peck, TX; Oil Town USA), but today it’s named after the man responsible for bringing the railroad to this rural community: Thomas Henry Ball (aka Tom Ball). If you visit, you’ll find a growing city that’s still connected to its historic past.

If you’re looking for the history of town, head to the renovated Railroad Depot. It sits just a stone’s throw from Main Street right on the tracks and takes visitors to the time when the railroad was king. Suddenly this outlying community was connected to the rest of the world and began to boom. Find relics of railroad days past and a model train at this museum.

The next museum you need to see is the Tomball Museum Center. Rather than one building packed with stuff, this is a collection of historic buildings each filled with artifacts giving visitors a glimpse into an era of Tomball’s history. There is a log cabin, a schoolhouse, a church and many more. My favorite is the 1940’s oil camp house commemorating the discovery of oil in Tomball which made this city’s population triple in a few short years.

If you want to step into a flying museum, then contact the Commemorative Air Force Gulf Coast Wing to see “Texas Raiders” a restored B-17 Flying Fortress. Multiple times a year, they take this gal up in the sky giving riders a once in a lifetime experience.

When you’ve worked up a giant appetite, Tomball has a number of giant options. For Texas tea room that’s nothing like a grandma-inspired tea party, head to The Whistle Stop Tea Room. Here you’ll find amazing sandwiches (jalapeno pimento cheese anyone?), homemade soups and a dessert case that’s worth the stop alone.

For country cookin’ with a Texas-sized competition, head to Mel’s Country Cafe. It sits out in the country, but that doesn’t stop folks from lining up to partake in the goodness. Both the chicken-fried steak and hamburger are considered the tops by Texas Monthly. But the burger that tops them all is the Mega Mel — a behemoth of meat, cheese, and bacon. It you can eat it in two hours, you get immortal glory on the wall…and a T-shirt.

Tomball has a number of great city parks. Spring Creek Park is massive with tall pines and open fields for playing frisbee or having a picnic. In the back corner, you’ll also find a historic marker for a Confederate gun powder mill that exploded on this site killing everyone inside. It left a crater so big that when it filled with rainwater it became a popular swimming hole that many say is haunted.

This important park down the way from Tomball is the site of Sam Houston’s famous “fork in the road.” During the Texas Revolution, he had to make a decision, turn left and run for safety in Louisiana or turn right and face the Mexican Army. Sam took a right and headed toward San Jacinto…the rest, my friends, is history.

Head into this nature preserve filled with acres of towering cedars and pines for a retreat from the busy world outside. You might even find the old cabin of the mystical “Old Kleb”, himself, who lived without electricity in these woods until the 1990’s! Spending some time in this peaceful nature almost makes you want to give up electricity too (I said almost…)

Groesbeck, TX - Limestone County - City Tour & Drive Thru

Day Trip to McKinney ???? (FULL EPISODE) S11 E12

Though it sits outside the ever-sprawling Metropolis of Dallas, McKinney has found a way to keep its small town charm. With a bustling town square, hundreds of years of preserved history and alot of good eatin', it's a great place to slow down for a day.

Sitting on the square, the Groovy Coop is a novelty and totally groovy antique shop! Find everything from funky artwork to retro video games and records!

The old 1874 Collin County Courthouse in the middle of the square has been turned into the McKinney Performing Arts Center. The courts have been swapped out for a stage, and some folks even think it might be haunted!

The Collin County History Museum in the old post office is the perfect place to start a historic tour. There’s even an augmented reality app you can download for the exhibits to see how the city has changed over the years. It’s pretty cool!

Chestnut Square Historic Village is 2 city blocks full of homes and stores dating back to the beginning of McKinney in the 1850s! It’s awesome to see how well preserved this history is. And it even comes alive with demonstrations on certain days, like a fully working replica of a blacksmith shop!

Calling all shoppers and barbecue junkies — stop in at this market for the B.O.B. (brisket on a biscuit with jalapeno blackberry jelly, that is) and stay for the shelves of fresh baked cookies, sweet smelling soaps and handmade candles.

This is the “people’s backyard.” A place where the locals come to hang, eat, drink and play. Serving up delicious “Tex-Ranch” style cuisine out of a historic home, every night is a block party!

Locally popped and flavored in over 50 “popcoctions,” this is every popcorn-lovers dream. Try the wild combos like jalapeno caramel popcorn or go crazy with a little mac-n-cheese-flavored popcorn. Sweet-tooths are also in for a treat, because it’s also an awesome candy shop.

This old grocery store warehouse-turned upscale-restaurant is probably not what you picture a Texas BBQ joint to look like. But Local Yocal Bar & Grill is taking fire and meat to another level. Sure, they serve up the traditional ‘que, but they’ve also got a dry-aged 20-oz Wagyu Bone-In Ribeye that’s to die for.

Outside is 289 acres of wetlands, prairies and forests. Inside is tons of exhibits on our local environment and (most importantly) LEMURS. It’s a wild time.

Another element of the Heard Nature Center is this ropes course full of team-building (and heart-pounding) challenges. Bring the family for a little bonding and friendly competition.

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went home to “normal life.” We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ????????????
