May Drive Through Methil Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland video of a May drive through Methil on ancestry visit to Fife,

LEVEN, SCOTLAND

Leven is a seaside town in Fife, set in the east Central Lowlands of Scotland. It lies on the coast of the Firth of Forth at the mouth of the River Leven, 8.1 miles (13.0 km) north-east of the town of Kirkcaldy and 6.4 miles (10.3 km) east of Glenrothes.
History
The origin of the name Leven comes from the Pictish word for flood. The nearby Loch Leven, being the flood lake, was the name given to both the river and town. A settlement is believed to have formed at the mouth of the River Leven very close to the area around Scoonie Brae with the discovery of the parish church of scoyne.During the mid-11th century, Bishop Tuadal of St Andrews gifted the church of scoyne to the Culdees of Loch Leven. By the end of the 11th century, the village along with the church were acquired by Bishop Robert of St Andrews following the decline of culdeen faith.

The first mention of the current town was made in the middle of the 15th century, according to two separate records referring to the town's name as levynnis-mouth. This contained information about the urgent need for repair work at the town's monastery and Georgie Durie, a local estate owner, becoming the keeper at the harbour.

In 1854 the Leven Railway opened, linking the town with Thornton Junction on the Edinburgh - Aberdeen main line. This helped it to become a tourist resort popular with visitors from the west of Scotland, and particularly Glasgow. Later in the 19th century the Leven Railway became part of a loop line of the North British Railway linking Thornton Junction and Leuchars Junction via St Andrews. The railway between Leven and St. Andrews closed in 1965. The railway between Leven and Thornton Junction closed to freight in 1966 and passengers in 1969. In 2019 a scheme was approved to re-open the town's railway station. Until then, the nearest station is Markinch railway station.

The ecclesiastical and civil parish of Scoonie included the town of Leven.

There is an all abilities path around the loch, known as the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, which can be accessed from seven different car parks around the loch at Kinross Pier; Kirkgate Park; Burleigh Sands; Loch Leven's Larder; Findatie; RSPB Loch Leven car park; and the car park at the Cashmere Factory. COALTOWN OF WEMYSS, SCOTLAND

The Coaltown of Wemyss is a village in south-east Fife, Scotland, around 5 km north of Kirkcaldy. The town was built in the 1890s as an estate village on the lands of nearby Wemyss Castle to house - as the name implies - mineworkers employed in several coal mines in the area. The miners' cottages were designated as a conservation area in 1980. Today the Coaltown has a primary school, some small shops, and the Earl David Hotel, named after David Wemyss, 2nd Earl of Wemyss

Old Photographs West Wemyss Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of West Wemyss a village lying on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, in Fife. The village began as a settlement around the site of Wemyss Castle which developed into a centre for the salt industry in the area. A harbour was later built in 1621 by the Wemyss family for the use of coal exportation from the pits on the lands of their estate. The harbour would become a major export point for coal by the late 17th century. The ships brought back imports of wood, iron and flax from the Baltic Countries. A wet dock was added for the increased demand of the coal in the late 1870s. Towards the latter stages of the 19th century, the village found itself surrounded by several mines, such as the Michael Pit in nearby East Wemyss. The industry, which saw trade with England and The Low Countries, started to struggle once the new docks were opened in Methil further along the Fife coast. Gradually, the demand for the harbour began to fall and it went into decline. The money for St Adrian's Kirk, church building was donated by the Wemyss family to provide a place of worship for the villagers of West Wemyss. The Church of Scotland acquired the property, but decided to close it in the 1960s because of the cost of much needed repairs. However, it was bought by Captain Michael Wemyss in 1972, who funded the repairs and established the Wemyss Trust; the Trustees undertook to maintain the fabric for as long as there is a worshipping community . In 1973 the congregations of St Adrian’s and St George’s in East Wemyss, amalgamated as Wemyss Parish Church, and were joined in the early 1980s by St Mary's by the sea. But in 2008 the decision was taken to close St George’s, and St Adrian’s once again became the parish church. Then in 2008 it was united with Buckhaven Parish Church, and at the present time is part of Buckhaven and Wemyss Parish Church

Spring Road Trip Drive From Kirkcaldy East On A955 To Visit To Leven Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland Spring travel video of a May road trip drive, with Scottish music, from Kirkcaldy, East on the A955 road, through Dysart, Coaltown of Wemyss, East Wemyss, Buckhaven and Methil on ancestry visit to Leven on the North side of the Firth of Forth in Fife The Levenmouth area consists of three principle coastal towns; Buckhaven, Methil and Leven. The first mention of the town of Leven was made in two separate records in the middle of the 15th century, with urgent need for repair work at the monastery at levynnis mouth and George Durie, an estate owner, became the keeper of the harbour at levynnismouth. The area is named after the mouth of the River Leven. The word Leven comes from the Pictish word for flood and was originally given to Loch Leven, in Perthshire, the flood lake at the head of the river. Until 1821, the only bridge across the river was the Cameron Brig on the main Kirkcaldy to Cupar road. In that year a pedestrian suspension bridge was built at Leven, which was replaced by a three arched stone bridge in 1840. The toll to cross this bridge was a Scottish halfpenny, or bawbee. Even though the stone bridge was replaced by a single span bridge in 1957, it is still known locally as the Bawbee Brig.
The A955 forms part of the Fife coast road. It starts on a junction with the A921 on the seafront at Kirkcaldy. The A921 used to be the A92 before a Kirkcaldy bypass was built. The A955 heads north east to Leven and is never more than a mile from the Firth of Forth. Heading out of Kirkcaldy, we pass junctions for the B928 and B929 and pass through the villages of Coaltown of Wemyss and East Wemyss. Into the town of Buckhaven, we have a junction with the B930 followed by the B931. We now take a more inland route around Methil and through Innterleven. Halfway along this route we have a junction with the B932, which loops through Methil, crossing the B931 and meeting us again at a roundabout just before the bridge over the River Leven, where the B931 is also met again. Across the bridge, the B933 comes in from the north. The original route of the A955 through Leven is now pedestrianised, so the road now loops around along the seafront, before heading back inland.

Charles Augustus Carlow was born on 30 November 1878 at 2 Links Place in Leven, Fife, to Mary Weatherstone, née Lindsay; born 1851, died 1929, daughter of William Lindsay, a shipowner, and Charles Carlow, born 1849, died 1923 a mining engineer. He studied mining technology at Heriot Watt College and the University of Edinburgh. He became a leading Scottish mining engineer and owner and managing director of the Fife Coal Company Ltd., that was based in Leven, Fife. In 1927 he gave Blair House and 27 acres of ground near Culross in Fife to serve as a convalescent home for elderly and injured miners. The home is named for him as Charles Carlow Miners Convalescent Home. In 1952 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of St Andrews. He died in St Andrews in Fife on 13 August 1954.

David Gibb was born was born in Methil near Leven, Fife on 31 October 1883, the eldest son of Robert Gibb, a salt manufacturer, and his wife Joanna. He attended Leven Public School then George Watsons College in Edinburgh. He studied mathematics and sciences at the University of Edinburgh graduating in 1906. While a student he lodged with a Mr Flockhart at 3 West Preston Street, Edinburgh. In 1909 he began lecturing in mathematics at the University. In 1910 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for his contributions to mathematics and astronomy. During the First World War he worked on the Ballistic Department Ordnance Committee at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, England, remotely calculating complex gun angles to fire on hidden or obscured targets, such as at the Gallipoli peninsula. He returned to the University of Edinburgh after the war. From 1920 he was President of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society. In 1934 he was promoted to Reader in Mathematics and remained in this role until his death in 1946. He died in Edinburgh on 28 March 1946.

In Gaelic, spelled Liobhann, the name Leven means Place Of The Flood. The surname Leven was first found in Shropshire, England. The Leven surname comes from a Middle English given name Lefwine, which in turn comes from the Old English elements leof, which meant dear or beloved, and wine, which meant friend. The various spellings include Lewin, Lewins, Lewens, Lewinson and others.
James Leven travelled from Leith, Edinburgh, aboard the ship Melbourne arriving in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, South Island, New Zealand on 18th March 1861; George Leven, aged 20 was a Seaman aboard the ship Gilmour taking passenger to Grosse Isle Quarantine Station in Quebec, Canada, but died at Grosse Isle on 15th June 1847 in the typhus epidemic

Coronavirus travel restrictions have now been eased in Scotland, it is now possible to travel out of your local area for non essential reasons.
