????????[4K] CASTILLO DE LA MOTA Walking Tour | One of the best Spanish castles | MEDINA DEL CAMPO | Spain

La Mota Castle (Medina del Campo)

Located in the town of Medina del Campo, this is one of the largest towers in Castile. It was used as fortress, and was at one time a strategic military centre.
The castle has a trapezoid floor plan. The fixed bridge at the main entrance was once a drawbridge. Once across the bridge, there is an arch with two turrets and the royal coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs. The interior has four towers with a courtyard, around which the different parts of the building are arranged. It was used as the Royal Archive during the reign of Henry IV. Given its enormous dimensions, it was also put to military use as an arsenal for artillery, and was one of the objectives of the Royalists in the uprising of the communards in the 16th century. It served as a prison for personages of note during the 16th and 17th centuries, and at one time played host to Juana la Loca. In 1942, after the Spanish Civil War, it became a training school.

Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Palace of Medina Sidonia

Luisa Isabel María del Carmen Cristina Rosalía Joaquina Álvarez de Toledo y Maura, Isabel to her friends, was the 21st Duchess of Medina-Sidonia, one of the oldest aristocratic families in Spain. She became known as the Red Duchess (la Duquesa Roja) because of her political convictions, for which she was imprisoned under the Franco regime. A prolific writer and a controversial historian, she inherited one of the largest private historical archives in Europe, and dedicated her life to its organisation and preservation. Controversial to the end, on her deathbed she married her female companion and secretary to ensure that the archive would remain intact in the ducal palace at Sanlúcar de Barrameda and not be divided amongst her children.

Isabel was the product of generations of aristocrats, politicians, historians, warriors and controversial figures. Despite her strong belief in social justice she never renounced her titles, and is it intriguing to ponder what she saw as the role of the nobility in contemporary Spain, and where she saw herself within that structure.

The founder of the House of Medina Sidonia was Alonso Pérez de Guzmán (1256-1309), better known as Guzmán el Bueno, one of Spain's most cherished legendary heroes. After defending the besieged town of Tarifa against Moorish troops and sacrificing his own son, whose life was offered in return for surrender, he was rewarded with land and titles. Subsequent generations of Guzmáns continued to assist the Catholic monarchs with the ethnic cleansing of Moors and Jews from Spain and amassed further wealth over the centuries.

The House of Medina Sidonia was entitled to rents and produce from much of what are now the Atlantic-facing Andalusian provinces of Cádiz and Huelva, including the ancient almadrabas of Conil and Zahara where huge quantities of tuna were netted each year. From the Port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, located on the mouth of the Guadalquivir River which forms the border between the two provinces, successive generations exported dried tuna, livestock, wine, grain and oil to Northern Europe, North Africa and the Americas. They became one of the richest families in Europe and their wealth enabled them to build up an impressive collection of art and furniture. Their estate included the Coto Doñana hunting grounds on the other side of the river from Sanlúcar, named after Doña Ana de Silva, wife of the 7th Duke, and now one of Europe's most important nature reserves.

( Andalusia - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Andalusia . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Andalusia - Spain

Castles and Forts of Spain - Castillo de la Mota and Medina del Campo

Medina del Campo was founded in the 11th century on the mota (a low rise of land, natural or artificial, which stands alone on a plain) where the castle stands today. Although this area is now on the outskirts of the town, it was originally the centre of the village. Thanks to the repopulation at the beginning of the late Middle Ages and the trade fairs of the 15th and 16th centuries, Medina became one of the most important places in Castile, reaching a population of 20,000 at the end of the 15th century (the same number as today). The castle stands out as one of the most interesting places in Medina: its construction was commissioned in the mid-15th century by Kings John II and Henry IV of Castile, and the Catholic Monarchs (Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon) completed the great work of the artillery barrier in 1483.

The main function of the castle from its creation was defensive, but in addition to being a militarily strategic place, its rooms were used as an archive (where part of the crown's documents were kept) and as a prison for illustrious prisoners such as Hernando Pizarro and César Borgia. It was one of the targets of Charles V's imperial troops during the revolt of the Comuneros in 1520.

After the Spanish Civil War, in the 1940s, the interior building was rebuilt to house the Escuela de Mandos de la Sección Femenina, a centre for women's social service.

Today the castle belongs to the Junta de Castilla y León, and is currently used for both tourism and as a training centre for courses and congresses.

The monumentality of the Collegiate Church of San Antolín, the work of Juan Gil de Hontañón, houses the banner of the Catholic Monarchs. The origins of the Castilian-Leonese municipality date back to pre-Romanesque times and its heyday was in the Middle Ages with its famous fairs and markets of international renown.

Most of them took place in the Plaza Mayor, an immense open space enclosed by aseptic buildings, full of the commercial and administrative offerings that mark the local pulse. Here are concentrated the large buildings representing the three traditional powers: the Municipality (Town Hall), the Church (Collegiate Church of San Antolin) and the Crown (Royal Palace).

In 1978, the historic quarter of Medina was declared a Historic-Artistic Site. The town of Valladolid is also the capital of the Rueda Designation of Origin, an important area dedicated to wine production for centuries in the region, where there are more than 80 wineries.

The intense commercial activity that took place between the 15th and 16th centuries led to the construction of numerous civil and religious buildings. Among them, the Convent of Santa María Magdalena stands out, which has a Gothic church decorated with beautiful frescoes by Luis Vélez, as well as a magnificent Calvary by the sculptor Esteban Jordán.

In terms of civil architecture, one of the most unique buildings is the Palacio de los Dueñas, a Renaissance construction with a spectacular two-storey colonnaded courtyard.

For relaxation, there is nothing better than a visit to the Las Salinas Spa Palace, on the outskirts of Medina del Campo. Its thermal waters are rated as the most mineralised in the world.

Medina del Campo's relationship with monarchs, members of the Court and other prominent figures is perhaps its most unique feature. Three Aragonese kings were born here (Fernando I of Antequera, Alfonso V and Juan II), and Leonor Urraca of Castile (wife of Antequera and queen consort of Aragon) and Isabella the Catholic herself took their last steps here.

The latter, moreover, wrote her last will and testament within the walls of the Royal Palace. A will in which she named her daughter Juana la Loca and her husband Ferdinand the Catholic as rulers of Castile.

SPAIN ( MEDINA DEL CAMPO PART 3 )നമുക്ക് സ്പെയിൻ കാണാം.

Medina del Campo grew in importance thanks to its fairs held during the 15th and 16th centuries. This helped with banking and the businesses of wool, textiles, books and an enormous variety of other goods. As the population increased, the town expanded outward toward the plain of Zapardiel brook. Since then, the Padilla Street became the business centre of Medina.

In 1489 a great trade agreement, that would last for 96 years, united the kingdoms of Spain and England with the reduction of trade tariffs, the recognition of France as a common enemy, and the marriage of Catherine of Aragon to King Henry VII's son, Prince Arthur (and later to King Henry VIII) - this was known as the Treaty of Medina del Campo (1489).
The word Mota refers to an artificial hill built to defend the castle better (See motte-and-bailey castle). The Mota fortress had a military function and it also was a royal dungeon, among its most notorious prisoners being Cesare Borgia. The castle was built between the 12th century and 15th century. It has a moat with its own drawbridge (today fixed), an outer curtain wall (for artillery), an inner curtain wall (with arrow slits for archers and guards) surrounding a large courtyard (with a chapel), and a great square tower (which is the Keep).

The castle was abandoned and collapsed, but was restored after the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). It was the first monumental building in Medina designated as a Heritage Site (Bien de interés cultural).
At the time of the Revolt of the Comuneros, Medina del Campo was a major town housing the royal artillery. A Royalist attempt to take possession of the artillery pieces led to heavy resistance culminating in the burning of the city.
