What to do with Kids in Warwick NY | Best Playgrounds in New York

We just found one of the best playgrounds in New York which is definitely one of the best free places for kids in New York, on our recent day trip to Warwick NY. It's called Warwick Playground dreams, built in 2019 for a whopping $350K and I'll say, worth every darn penny. It is AMAZING!!! On our short family-friendly adventure to Warwick we walked around their VERY cute downtown, ate at Fetch (indoor and outdoor dining and a germ-free menu on your phone!!), went to the playground, and finished up with a trip to the famous Bellvale Farms Creamery, which had a CRAZY long line and we didn't wait for ice cream but it still has a great view so worth a stop whether or not you can bare the line! Be sure to check my playlist for my playlist Hudson Valley for Kids (aka Great Day Trips from NYC with Kids)for more great day trip ideas:

Legoland New York Review & Overview, New for 2021 Amusement Park | America's Best Legoland

Legoland New York opened in late May 2021 as the ninth and newest Legoland theme park. This 150 acre theme park is owned by Merlin and it is located in Goshen, New York on a giant hill. The park features 7 themed lands: Brick Street, Bricktopia, Ninjago, Lego Castle, Lego City, Lego Pirates, and Miniland. These colorful areas feature interactive displays and a strong collection of family rides. And I think it's the best Legoland in the United States already. Find out why in this review!

Tunnel Behind a Waterfall!!! Horsehoe Mine Falls in Ellenville, NY

I first learned about Horseshoe Mine Falls with a mining tunnel behind it late last year. But also learning that I will have to wade in the pool if I wanted to photograph the waterfall from inside the tunnel, I decided to wait until the following spring when the temperatures warmed up.

So it’s late spring the following year and the waders I ordered finally arrived. I went to visit Horseshoe Mine Falls. I was not disappointed.

When I started hiking the Catskills and surrounding regions to photograph and film waterfalls more than a year ago, I thought of the activity more as “work” than “pleasure”. I got up early before sunrise and drove to a remote location over an hour away sometimes hiking for a mile or two and the night before I ran through a series of checklists making sure my cameras were in working order, the memory cards formatted, the batteries charged, and the drone’s firmware up-to-date, not to mention the research I did to know something of the place that I may say something worthwhile on video for the viewers to hear. I did not at all buy into a favorite quote among outdoor lovers attributed to naturalist John Muir saying, “the mountains are calling and I must go”. I did not consider myself to be among the flock. It was, for me, pure work.

And when I arrived at the waterfall, I had to decide where to position the cameras, where to launch the drone from, what to say about what I was seeing, and ultimately decide whether I have captured enough on video before I left. My mind was constantly on a future outcome instead of the present moment that my nature-tripping became obsessively “work” far removed from the “play” that it should have been.

But recently having found a new job, I became immersed in corporate work encased in steel, glass, and concrete looking after the company’s bottom-line. My mind was constantly dialed to a future outcome. I was left with little time and energy if at all for spontaneous activities like the nature-tripping I used to do.

Yet two months in to my work, I began to feel a longing for the outdoors. I will drive past the woods and see the mountains in the distance and from somewhere within me a pang of desire would surge wanting to be there instead of here on the asphalt road on my way to work. Spring, a waterfall recently made public, a mining tunnel, and the arrival of my waders could not have come at a better time. It’s off to Horseshoe Mine Falls I go.

The trip had a sort of coming-home feel to it when I arrived. Standing at the trailhead for the waterfall I was about to commune with I could not help but think to myself, spend time in nature long enough in whatever capacity, condition, or demeanor you happen to be in, then stay away from her long enough, and, like a mountain from afar, she will come calling for her flock and shepherd you back.

History of Cupsaw Lake in Ringwood NJ, Told with Aerial Images Filmed with DJI Mavic 2

Today's episode of Skylands, takes us to Cupsaw lake; one of the northernmost lakes in beautiful Ringwood.

But first, let's talk a little about Ringwood.

The town of Ringwood is nestled in the heart of the Ramapo mountains.

FUN FACT: This area is also referred to as the Highlands Natural Preserve, where, according to geologists, the oldest rock formations in the world could be found.

Two local schools, Martin J Ryerson Middle School and Eleanor G. Hewitt Elementry Schools both located close to Cupsaw Lake, are named after families that owned and operated the mines in Ringwood.

Interestingly: Iron from the mines was involved in both the Revolutionary and Civil War, as well as use in the construction of the capitol dome and the Brooklyn Bridge.

ANOTHER FUN FACT: Did you know prior to the Europeans settling in Ringwood, it was the hunting and fishing grounds for the Leni-Lenape and Minsi Indians who lived in the Pompton area?

In the last episode, we looked at Eriskine lake. Now let's look at this frozen wonderous beauty named Cupsaw lake.

According to an article from the 1920s, the name Cupsaw is a name derived from the Dutch word kuip which means tub or coopers staves, which is the wood used in making barrels.

Cupsaw Lake, a manmade lake came to be as a result of a dam being built-in 1932. The Ringwood company built log cabins around the 65-acre lake to become vacation homes of the affluent escaping city life. People fell in love with the lake, the outdoors, and a more relaxed life so they winterized their homes and moved to Ringwood permanently.

Today: Ringwood is home to about 12,000 people in over 4000 homes spread around 3 lakeside communities. Cupsaw has a population of about 6000 people making up about half of Ringwoods total population

Sholam Falls and Frozen Balls Falls -- Two Well-Kept Secrets in the Catskills!!!

Two waterfalls practically on top of each other. And a third waterfall not too far downstream. All three not very well known unless you're a local of Napanoch in the town of Wawarsing, NY. Now tell me you've heard of either place. They're outside mainstream tourism so most likely not. Even searching online for top ten things to do in Napanoch, Wawarsing, or Ellenville will make no mention of these waterfalls. Those are testament right there that should you go visit, you will very much likely encounter no one and all three waterfalls on Trout Creek--their strength, grace, and glory--will be yours and yours alone for your eyes to feast on.

But, alas, I would be remiss if I did not mention that--and perhaps this is all because of its pristine and relative obscurity--this time of year the area could be swarming with ticks. My wife and I found this out when--as excited as I was that I have found one waterfall, Shalom Falls, so easy to get to--I went back the next day this time taking my wife along right after lunch. We came back home shocked to discover 5 ticks crawling on our clothing. Fortunately, it was not too late, none bit -- yet.

There may be a way around the ticks, however. Sunrise.

Ticks may be least active at sunrise that they're practically non-existent. There are websites that say ticks are active from 6am to 9pm, but I am convinced these are just estimates. I don't think ticks watch the clock. They probably look at the light of day, temperature, humidity, and other natural signals. This is probably why ticks were never a problem in my previous hikes, because I always went at sunrise. For all I know, the other waterfalls I've been to are just the same except that I came when ticks were asleep.

So now, sunrise has one more item to add to my list of advantages over sunset or any other time of day for that matter:

-- No crowd
-- I can fly my drone with no one complaining about the racket, privacy, hazards, and whatnot
-- I can take landscape photos without waiting for others to be done with their Instagramming
-- Sunrise photos are pretty indistinguishable from sunset photos
-- I can get lost in the trails and not worry about getting dark
-- Should anything happen to me, later hikers will soon find me
-- I can be home in time for breakfast with Dunkin coffee and rolls in hand from the drive-thru
-- No ticks

There is just one downside to shooting at sunrise, and this could be big for many (including yours truly on some days) -- getting up early.

If you're prone to waking up no earlier than, say, 10am, then you will have to deal with ticks some other way.

But if you're an early-riser like me, then, Nature may not be all streams, rainbows, and butterflies, for Nature has her gnats, wasps, and creepy crawlers, too, but at least you get to hike worry-free when it comes to the sneaky, insidious, and nowhere-near-visible-until-too-late ticks.

How To Get To: The Ellenville Buttermilk Falls

I get many people asking 'where is this' of many of the local locations I shoot at, and although I usually geo tag my shots, even on maps, many of these places can be tough to figure out if you are not familiar with the area or the route. So I decided to put together a series of videos that will show how to get some of these locations in and around Ellenville where I live, where to park and how to find the spots once you are there. This is not just for fellow local photogs, but also for anyone who fancies getting to the more 'unknown jewels' we have in the area for hikes and picnics etc.

This video features how to get to and explore the Ellenville Buttermilk Falls (not to be confused with the Spring Glen Buttermilk Falls which I will cover in another video).

Here is the route map heading east on Rt 52 from the Ellenville Stewart's Shop:

Thurmont Maryland more than a gateway

Thurmont is a historic town that was was founded in 1751 as the Town of Mechanicstown. It is located in the north of Frederick County, only a few minutes from the Pennsylvania border. It has earned the nickname of “Gateway to the Mountains” because it is so close to the Appalachian mountains. Thurmont is close to Catoctin Mountain Park, which contains Camp David, and Cunningham Falls State Park. Thurmont is also home to Catoctin Colorfest, an arts and crafts festival that draws in about 125,000 people each autumn.

Secret Waterfall Just East of the Catskills--Hanging Rock Falls (and Nevele Falls) in Ellenville, NY

Just a short, downhill walk to Beer Kill from Route 52 in Ellenville, NY is a massive waterfall that is practically unheard of, Hanging Rock Falls. Yes, you will find it online—that was how I found it—but what few websites you’d likely find were posted only in recent years some as recent as this year. Indeed, a December 2020 post says they’ve “lived here for almost 8 years now and have never heard of or been to this waterfall”. It’s a powerful waterfall formed by massive rocks tiered in a stair-step cascade approximately 100 feet in height that is not much talked about either through intent—the locals might want to keep such gem to themselves—or scorn after the automobile then the airplane diverted New York City vacationers away from Ellenville to other far-flung destinations thus ending Ellenville’s glory days as a vacation hotspot when rail was the only means of long-distance travel on land.

This region east of the Catskills—the Rondout Valley and the nearby Shawangunk Mountains—is riddled with waterfalls and Hanging Rock Falls just 2.5 miles north of the Ellenville village center on Route 52 is just one. Two miles south also on Route 52 is another waterfall, Nevele Falls, sometimes called Buttermilk Falls by locals. The name “Nevele” came from the name of an inn owned by an early Jewish farmer renting out rooms. In 1903, he named his inn “Nevele” after the number of his children, eleven, spelled backwards.

The name “Ellenville” itself has a storied origin. Local lore has it that in the early 1800s the villagers needed to name their village to apply for their own post office. Coming up blank they settled on the name of one of them, Ellen. So Ellenville it was and Ellenville since.

If you’re ever in the area, I strongly suggest visiting these two waterfalls as they are practically by the roadside with Hanging Rock Falls offering a deeper trek into nature with many possible off-trail—with caution of course as the terrain can be steep—attractions and adventures.
