Sunken Ships in Marsh Harbour in 2022? || Sailing to and Exploring the Abacos, Bahamas
2022 Update: Sunken Ships in Marsh Harbour, Abacos, Bahamas. Sailing to and Exploring the Abacos (Marsh Harbour, Elbow Cay, and Pelican Cay Land & Sea Park) on our Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran. Join us as we sail to and explore Marsh Harbour, Elbow Cay, and Pelican Cay Land & Sea Park in the Abacos. We'll be spending 6 months in the Bahamas this year on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran, LabMariner, with our three labmaraners: Anubis, Mocha, and Nuala. A labmaraner is a cross between a labrador retriever and a weimaraner - and we have one of each color. Firstly, we sail to Marsh Harbour where we check out whether the sunken ships we saw in the harbour last year were still there. We also check out whether the damage we saw along our walk in May of 2021 to Maxwell's Supermarket was still there in May of 2022. We then travel to and take a mooring ball in Hope Town Harbour in Elbow Cay. Hope Town is a super cute town and we have a great time exploring the town, climbing the lighthouse, and going for a long bike ride. Finally, we head to Pelican Cay Land & Sea Park to snorkel the reefs.

Abaco is a cluster of islands located in the northern Bahamas and nestled between the Sea of Abaco and the Atlantic ocean. The mainland comprises two islands that are joined by bridges ... the Great Abaco and Little Abaco. Marsh Harbor is the main township in Abaco and located in Great Abaco. The whole of Abaco is dotted with many lovely beaches. Treasure Cay is a peninsula located north of Marsh Harbor and is also part of Great Abaco. There are wonderful blue holes in the mainland of Abaco.
There are many cays (small islands) that are part of Abaco... Elbow Cay (Hopetown is the main settlement here that has a famous lighthouse) has several stunning beaches (Tahiti beach and Elbow Cay Beach are two very popular ones), national parks etc.
Great Guana Cay is another small island located near Elbow Cay and is well known for its pristine powdery white sandy beaches. Green Turtle Cay is another laid back yet popular island in Abaco, New Plymouth is the main settlement here. There are gift shops & galleries, restaurants, museums and historic sites here. You can stroll around or rent a golf cart or a bicycle to explore the quaint town. There are small local eateries and restaurants & bars in all these cays that serve authentic Bahamian and Caribbean food as well as cold beers & local cocktails.
Castaway Cay is a Disney operated island where the Disney cruise docks and the cruise passengers enjoy the lovely beaches, a range of water activities, bicycle and other eco-tours, food and drinks.
Abaco is a magnet for activities such as Deep Sea Fishing and Bonefishing, Scuba Diving and Snorkeling (there are many water areas that have colourful corals and marine life), boating & sailing around to explore the cays, nature tours etc.

Sailing From Marsh Harbour To Harbour Island - Episode 48
We rest up for a day after arriving in The Bahamas, then sail our catamaran around the east side of Harbour Island and explore the town for a couple of days. We then have a short but rough passage to Cat Island and wait for a weather window to sail to the Dominican Republic.

We've popped into a few random stores as we've sailed through the Bahamas and let's just say they leave a lot to be desired. With almost no fresh produce and sky-high prices, it's difficult to shop. We've heard Marsh Harbour is THE place to provision so we're on a mission in search of a better selection and more affordable prices.
it's also the first time (since we've owned our boat) we've busted out our folding bikes. We've had them for a couple years now and we absolutely love them...but that said space on the boat is extremely limited. We told ourselves if we don't use the bikes we'll have to sell them when we return to FL for our last bit of service.

Marsh Harbour Tour after Dorian
After our mission to Manowar, we took Grant Albury's Ferry to Marsh Harbour, through the Boat Harbour, this use to be a scenic route of beautiful vacation homes, now turned to ruble. We hitch a ride through Marsh Harbour with a lovely couple who volunteer a few months of their time to help out. Here you will see where the well known places use to be such as The Conch Inn and Marina, Moorings, SunSail and Dream yachts bases which are no longer, Dive Abacos and famous Snappas Restaurant. Then we take a drive through town to the airport. Very sad to see all the devastation.
But heart warming to see what the Samaritan's Purse is doing! They have operations all over Abacos and Grand Bahamas, a hospital in Freeport, rebuilding in the cays such as Manoware Cay, and in Marsh Harbour, hiring locals and injecting capital into the local economy. They promised to stay until the work is done, unlike many other organizations.

We took a day to rent a car in Marsh Harbour and drive to Treasure Cay. Treasure Cay boasts a beautiful 3 1/2 mile long white sand beach that was named one of the world's top 10 prettiest beaches by National Geographic. Video taken in July 2012.
