Smallest Town on Puerto Rico's Big Island: Maricao! Montoso Gardens, Torre de Piedra and More!
On this day we visit Maricao Puerto Rico. It is the 2nd smallest town in population (next to Culebra) with only about 4,000 residents. It is high in the mountains with wide views and lush tropical greenery.
We visit with Bryan Brunner and Carlos Nazario two of the island's leading plant experts at Montoso Gardens. We also visit La Gruta de San Juan Bautista, the Plaza, a sweet restaurant called Rincon de Recuerdos, the Torre de Piedra (Stone Tower) in the National Park of Monte del Estado as well as the Stone House (Casa de Piedra). A fun and fulfilling day!

Este hermoso lugar se encuentra ubicado en las montañas de la cordillera central de la isla, rodeado por exuberante vegetación y vistas panorámicas impresionantes.
En este video, les mostraré los lugares más destacados del Centro Vacacional Monte del Estado, incluyendo sus pintorescas cabañas, su impresionante piscina de agua natural y sus fascinantes senderos para caminar. Además, experimentarán conmigo la rica cultura de Puerto Rico y sus deliciosos sabores en la cercana ciudad de Maricao.

El Instituto para el Desarrollo Integral del Individuo, la Familia y la Comunidad (IDIFCO) es una institución sin fines de lucro que está dirigida al enfoque de servicios psicológicos, trabajo social, orientación y cursos vocacionales en los pueblos de Maricao, Yauco y Guánica. La Orden de las Hermanas Dominicas de la Virgen del Rosario de Fátima llevan a cabo esta labor comunitaria.
El municipio de Maricao se localiza en la región central de Puerto Rico. Colinda con los municipios de Las Marías, Lares, Sabana Grande, San Germán, Mayagüez y Yauco.
El terreno de Maricao es muy montañoso y pertenece a la región lluviosa del oeste de la Cordillera Central.
Se conoce como el Pueblo de las Indieras, la Ciudad del Monte del Estado, la Ciudad de Leyenda y Romance y la Tierra del Café.
Su población para el censo del año 2020 fue de 4,755 habitantes. Perdió un 24% de su población en un periodo de 10 años. Es el municipio con menor población en la isla de Puerto Rico.
Maricao está compuesto por los siguientes barrios: Bucarabones, Indiera Alta, Indiera Baja, Indiera Fría, Maricao Pueblo, Maricao Afuera y Montoso.
Los ríos Rosario, Maricao, Prieto, Guanajibo, Guaba, Bonelli, Lajas y los embalses Prieto y Toro se encuentran en su región.

Puerto Rico Amazing Places | Bosque Toro Negro | Charco Doña Juana
In Today's video, we explore 2 amazing places in Puerto Rico, Bosque Toro Negro and Salto Doña Juana in orocovis. Toro Negro State Forest is one of the 21 forests that make up the public forests system in Puerto Rico. It is in the Cordillera Central region of the island and covers 7,968 acres of mountains. Toro Negro's mountains have heights reaching up to 4,400 feet (1,300 m) and include Cerro de Punta, Cerro Jayuya and Cerro Rosa, the three highest peaks on the island. Nested among these mountains is Lake Guineo, the island's highest lake. The forest has 18 kilometers (11 mi) of trails, an observation tower, two natural swimming pools (Spanish:charcos), camping and picnic areas, nine rivers, and numerous creeks and waterfalls.
Visitors can explore this magnificent forest on their own or in a tour. Among the facilities available at Toro Negro are a camping area, a recreational area, a system of hiking trails and observation points. Information about trails and campsites can be found on this website:
The best way to find out what trails will be open when you are visiting is to check out the Friends of Bosque Toro Negro facebook page:
This group of volunteers does great work cleaning the trails and educating the public about the ecosystem. Sometimes they even organize Yoga classes in the forest! You can ask the volunteers questions through Facebook Messenger, and they reply quite quickly with helpful information.
El Chorro de Dona Juana is a beautiful waterfall located in the town of Orocovis, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from San Juan. This Charco is one of the best examples of nature in its splendor, the sounds, fauna, and subtle breeze will make you forget everything and just enjoy the moment.
To get to the waterfalls, drive on PR-149 to km marker 41.3 and park along the road right before or after the waterfall bridge. At 200 feet tall, Dona Juana is the tallest waterfall in Puerto Rico!
These amazing falls are part of the Doña Juana Creek where it runs into the Toro Negro river. The falls are very accessible, as you can see them from the road as you drive across the bridge. No hiking required! However, some adventure groups organize events to hike and climb to the top of this incredible natural wonder. There are actually several other falls above the two that are visible from the road!
