Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Consuegra

Consuegra is a municipality located in the province of Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, Spain. In 2009 the municipality had a population of 10,932 inhabitants. It is 80 km from Ciudad Real and 60 km from Toledo.

The principal economy sector is agriculture. The industry is predominated by textile and wood. The castle and the windmills are Consuegra's most important monuments. Most Spanish windmills, like those described in Cervantes's Don Quixote, can be found in the community of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain.

The best examples of restored Spanish windmills may be found in Consuegra where several mills spike the hill just outside town, giving a spectacular view of the 12th-century castle and of the town. The castle was once a stronghold when Consuegra was the seat and priory of the Knights of San Juan, the Spanish branch of the Knight's Hospitallers of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Windmills are also located in Mota del Cuervo, Tomelloso, and Campo de Criptana.

Consuegra is famous due to its windmills. They became famous in the 16th century, when Don Quixote was first published. The introduction of the windmills was made by Caballeros Sanjuanistas, who brought these machines that helped millers. These machines used the wind to grind grain (the most common grain is wheat). The windmills were transmitted from fathers to sons. They usually consisted of two rooms or levels. Millers had to carry sacks of grains that could weigh 60 or 70 kilos to the top floor, they rotated the sails of the windmill as the top part of the windmill or dome was movable. They stopped being used at the beginning of the 1980s.

The original fortress at the site was perhaps built by emperor Trajan, but historical records only recall that a fortress here was initially built by Almanzor. During the Reconquest, in times of Alfonso VIII to the Knights Hospitaller. In 1813 it was destroyed during the Peninsular War. In 1962 the castle was ceded to the town hall and underwent a period of reconstruction. This received an impulse in 1985 with the creation of the School Workshop, whose activity continue today.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Belmonte

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Belmonte

Belmonte is a Spanish municipality of the province of Cuenca , in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha . It is located at kilometer 342 of the N-420 road , which runs from Cuenca to Alcázar de San Juan , which is the same as that of Córdoba to Tarragona .

The excavations carried out in the Collegiate Church in 1976 due to the collapse of part of the apse, exposed the ruins of an earlier Visigothic church, perhaps of the fifth century, which proves that the population is older than imagined.

Erroneously in some documents it appears with the name of The Huts, when it turns out that from always it was called Bellomonte . In the Bull of Pope Innocent III a Garcia Bishop of Cuenca called Bellomonte, because of the mountain that surrounded the town.

King Enrique II of Castile , on 20-2-1367, in the courts of Burgos , granted him the privilege of villazgo, exempting him from the jurisdiction of Alarcón and granting them the same privilege as that enjoyed by the residents of Castillo de Garcimuñoz . A similar privilege had previously been granted to him by King Pedro I of Castile in 1361.

All this was very important to turn Belmonte into one of the most important towns in the province and was named Head of the Party of the whole region, because there were all the main administrations as well as in the provincial capital that was and is Basin. Some are the courts, the prison that today is the theater of Belmonte.

The castle of Belmonte is a fortress that rises in the hill of San Cristóbal, to the outskirts of the town of Belmonte , to the southwest of the province of Cuenca . It was declared a historical-artistic Monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasury by decree of June 3, 1931. Currently, it is considered as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).

Belmonte Castle is a unique building that, due to its state of preservation, its special structure, and its external appearance, practically the same as it had at the time of its construction, constitutes a valuable heritage treasure. It was built in the second half of the fifteenth century , by order of Don Juan Pacheco , first Marquis of Villena . It was a moment of convulsions and internal struggles in the Kingdom of Castile .

Recently Yoly and I made a video about things you MUST NOT do in Spain. And it was really popular, as well as a little controversial.

So we decided to follow it up with something more positive - the things you have MUST DO in Spain if you want to have a truly local and authentic experience.

11. Read a great book before you come!
Before I moved to Spain, reading really helped me get a grip on this country and in the end have a much more local experience.

▶ BUY 'GHOSTS OF SPAIN' HERE:
▶ BUY 'DON QUIXOTE' HERE:

10. People watch during the evening paseo!
People watching is a real cliche, but it can be an amazing way to discover a place. So how do you do it right in Spain?

9. Explore the neighbourhoods as well!
Don't just limit yourself to the historic centre - hit the barrios where the locals are and see that side of life!

▶ Check out this video of a tapas crawl in our Madrid neighbourhood:

8. Explore lesser-known parts of Spain!
Of course you want to visit Barcelona, Seville, Madrid etc. But why not hit the rural areas? Or lesser know regions?

▶ In this video Yoly and I head to the beautiful rural Jerte Valley

7. Eat a menú del día in an old man bar!
These bars are full of locals who are going about their busy day and stop to eat a big lunch. Such an amazing way to get a glimpse at everyday life in Spain.

6. Make time for a lengthy 'sobremesa'!
Once you've finished lunch, be sure to make time to chill out with a huge gin and tonic!

5. Drink local wine!
Don't just still to Rioja and Ribera del Duero - make sure you check out local wines too.

▶ In this video Yoly and I head to rural Granada and drink local wine:

▶ My video to help you understand Spain's famous Rioja wine:

▶ My video to help you understand Spain's other famous wine region - Ribera del Duero:

4. Eat paella like a local!
First you want to make sure you eat non-frozen paella. But then, you also want to eat it WHEN the locals eat it.

▶ My video about Spanish food myths (incl. paella info!):

3. See an AMAZING flamenco show!
I'm not really into dance... but flamenco is so much more than that. And I adore it!

▶ My wife Yoly is a passionate flamenco expert and leads incredible private flamenco experiences. Check them out here:

2. Eat Spanish delicacies that scare you!
I'm talking blood sausage, sweetbreads and pigs ears. Get into it - it's the local food!

1. Talk to a stranger in a bar (or somewhere else)!
In Spain we very easily and quickly strike up conversations with strangers. So even if you don't have much Spanish, go for it!

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Toledo

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Toledo

Toledo is an ancient city set on a hill above the plains of Castilla-La Mancha in central Spain. The capital of the region, it’s known for the medieval Arab, Jewish and Christian monuments in its walled old city. It was also the former home of Mannerist painter El Greco. The Moorish Bisagra Gate and the Sol Gate, in Mudéjar style, open into the old quarter, where the Plaza de Zocodover is a lively meeting place.

Toledo is one of the Spanish cities with the greatest wealth of monuments. Known as the “city of the three cultures”, because Christians, Arabs and Jews lived together there for centuries, behind its walls Toledo preserves an artistic and cultural legacy in the form of churches, palaces, fortresses, mosques and synagogues. This great diversity of artistic styles makes the old quarter of the capital of Castile - La Mancha a real open-air museum, which has led to it being declared a World Heritage Site.
Toledo is also a city linked to deep popular traditions, as the procession of the Most Holy Corpus Christi, a festival declared of International Tourist Interest, demonstrates every year.

The city of Toledo has its origins in Toletum, the name the Romans gave to this settlement on the banks of the River Tagus after its conquest in 190 BC. The city maintained its importance for centuries and, in the Visigothic era, became the capital of Hispania (6th C.). The arrival of the Arabs in the 8th century, together with the presence of Christians and Jews, made Toledo the “city of the three cultures”. This was one of the Toledo's most splendid periods when, among other important events, the Toledo School of Translators was founded. Later, when Carlos V came to the throne in 1519, the city became an imperial capital.

The way that Christians, Arabs and Jews lived side by side for centuries has been reflected in the form of a great artistic and cultural legacy. The maze of streets making up the historic centre of Toledo is only bounded by walls in which many gates were opened. The Bisagra gate, presided over by two bodies and a great imperial shield forms the main access to the city within the walls. This noble gate, of Muslim origin, includes a central courtyard and was altered during the reign of Carlos I (Emperor Carlos V)I. The Alfonso VI gate or Vieja de Bisagra gate, built in 838, is one of the most faithful reflections of Muslim art in the city. The Sol gate was built in the 13th century in Mudejar style and contains the remains of a paleochristian sarcophagus.

Via these and other entrances you can reach picturesque places, like the Plaza de Zocodover. In the Arab period, this central space housed an important market, and festivals and all kinds of social events were held here. Nowadays the square, surrounded by buildings with porches, continues to be one of the busiest places in the city. Synagogues, mosques and churches jostle in the narrow streets of Toledo, which is characterised by the mixture of artistic styles.

The Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, which predates the Christian reconquest, was built in 999 as a copy of the Mosque at Córdoba. It is an unusual building with a square floor plan covered by nine caliphal vaults (a type of groined vault leaving the centre free). To this, a Romanesque-Mudejar sanctuary was added in the 12th century.

Good examples from the Mozarabs (Christians who lived under Moslem rule) are the churches of San Sebastián and Santa Eulalia, while the Mudejars left in Toledo a style with rich Arab decoration. Horseshoe arches, lobed windows and other architectural elements can be appreciated in various buildings in Toledo. Santiago del Arrabal is one of the best examples of this style in the city, which has led this church also being known as the Mudejar Cathedral. The origin of its construction is uncertain, although it was probably in the time of King Alfonso VI when the church was built, taking advantage of an old mosque. The outstanding features of the early structure are a tower which recalls a Muslim minaret.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Monastery of Ucles

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Monastery of Ucles

The Monastery de Santiago de Uclés is in the Spanish town of Uclés in Castile-La Mancha and was built by the Order of Santiago, whose main headquarters was in that town. he monastery is at the top of a hill to the west of the town of Uclés. It is part of a large complex of buildings constructed during different historical periods, starting from the Muslim domination, and reaching its completion as a fortress during its possession by the Order of Santiago. This was the Order's most important home, acquiring its present aspect as part of the Reconquista.

The hill on which the monastery now stands was the site of a Celtiberian castro, a Bronze Age fortress used by the native Celts. In 893, Al-Fath ben Musa ben Dhi-l-Num, having to withdraw from Toledo, made Uqlish (Uclés) his home and capital of the region. He had to fortify the town from attack, building a new fortress in the 896. In 1085, following the conquest of Toledo, Uqlīsh was occupied by Christians, who installed a garrison there. In 1108, the battle of Uclés -- also known as the battle of Seven Counts -- led to the defeat of the Christian army by Tamim ben Yusuf.

After the final conquest by the Christians in 1174, King Alfonso VIII of Castile gave the fortress to the Order of Santiago, and it became their main headquarters. After the end of the Reconquista, the set of buildings were remodeled, removing many of the defensive elements of the fotress and giving it its current appearance. Two walls, however, were preserved. One of the walls protects the old orchard, watered with the waters of the Bedija river.

The construction of the actual monastery began on May 7, 1529, during the reign of Carlos V, Holy Roman Emperor, starting in the east wing, which is of Plateresque style. The original traces are by Enrique Egas. Construction in the Herrerian style began in the last quarter of the 16th century. In the 17th century, the work on the courtyard and the main staircase continued, and the west and south wings were finished. In 1735, under the reign of Philip V, the east nave and the main roof were completed in the Churrigueresque style. Stone from the hill Cabeza del Griego (Segobriga) was used, particularly in the eastern façade.

In 1836, with the confiscation of Mendizábal, the Order of Santiago were forced to leave the complex. Though plans existed in the early 20th century for the monastery to become a secondary school, and later a novitiate and college of Augustinians, it was ransacked and damaged in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. During the three years of the war, the complex was a makeshift hospital, and served as a prison for political prisoners after the war ended, between the years 1939 and 1943. Prisoners who died from disease or who were executed were buried in an area outside the monastery known as La Tahona. In October 1949, the monastery was host to a minor seminary of the bishopric of Cuenca, called Santiago Apóstol.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Guadalajara

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Guadalajara

Guadalajara is a city and municipality in the autonomous community of Castile–La Mancha, Spain, and in the natural region of La Alcarria. It is the capital of the province of Guadalajara. It is located roughly 60 kilometres (37 miles) northeast of Madrid on the Henares River, and has a population of 84,803 (2012).

A Roman town called Arriaca, possibly founded by a pre-Roman culture, is known to have been located in that region. There is however no archeological proof of its existence, only references in texts such as the Ruta Antonina, which describe it as being in the hands of the Carpetani[2] when encountered by the Romans. The city, as Caracca, was incorporated into the Roman province of Hispania Tarraconensis. The city was on the high road from Emerita (modern Mérida) to Caesaraugusta (modern Zaragoza), 22 M. P. northeast of Complutum (modern Alcalá de Henares).

The town of Guadalajara was founded by the Andalusians in the 8th century. They named it Wādī-al-Ḥajāra (Arabic: وَادِي ﭐلحَجَارَۃ‎‎), meaning Valley of Stones; in theory the literal translation of the Iberian name (Arriaca), meaning Stony River. The history of the town during the Al-Andalus period was significant. They built monuments including the Moorish Bridge over the Henares River, the now ruined old Alcázar (Arabic for palace), and a mosque which later became the former Cathedral of St. Mary.

Nowadays, Guadalajara is involved in urban development plans that are quickly increasing the population of the city. New districts like Aguas Vivas (Live Waters) have recently been inaugurated.

The bridge across the Henares river is Arab but built on Roman foundations. It has several historic buildings such as the Palacio del Infantado, as well as many churches, such as the church of San Ginés. Although Guadalajara is the biggest city in its diocese, the cathedral is located in the nearby town of Sigüenza. However, in Guadalajara, there is a co-cathedral: the church of Saint Mary, in Mudejar style. Very close to this church, is placed the chapel known as Capilla de Luis de Lucena, which has several fresco paintings on its walls and ceiling. The Church of los Remedios was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1924, and currently serves as the auditorium of the University of Alcalá. The Church of la Piedad was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931.

he districts of Iriépal, Taracena, Usanos, and Valdenoches are small agricultural districts, primarily dependent on the economic activity of Guadalajara and with little historical architecture, usually just a modest medieval or modern church. Thus, in Iriépal there is the Concepción church, constructed in the 16th century, which is known for its Mudejar tower. In Taracena there is the 17th century Church of the Immaculate, in a very simple Renaissance style. In Usanos, there is the 13th-century Romanesque church of the Assumption, considerably remodeled in later periods and which features a crenelated tower.

Places to see in ( Castile La Mancha - Spain ) Toledo San Roman Church

The Iglesia de San Román is a church in Toledo. The church built in the Mudéjar architectural style in the 13th century. in the place where before there was an old Visigothic architecture and probably, an Ancient Roman building. It is currently the headquarters of the Museum of the Councils and Visigothic Culture.

It is located in one of the highest and privileged places of the city, in the second of the twelve hills that form it. There is already news of the parish in the 12th century and the church would be consecrated in 1221 by the archbishop Rodrigo Ximénez de Rada. The tradition indicates that in it was crowned king to Alfonso VIII of Castile the August 26 of 1166.

The church presents floor plan with three naves, separated by horseshoe arches with alfiz that support on pillars With Visigoth and Roman columns attached to capitels are reused from Visigothic origin in some cases, distinguishing themselves by its Corinthian leaves.

Throughout 13th century a new apse was constructed and the robust tower (of Toledan Mudéjar style, with its two upper bodies in double bell tower, opening the vanos in groups of two and three, and that would serve as a model for other Toledan towers); In addition to being realized the murals to the fresco in Romanesque painting figurative combined with typically Mudéjar decorations. Of great beauty, these are considered the most southern of Spain. The frescoes are divided into two areas separated by inscriptions. They emphasize the four winged evangelists and the representations of archbishops, the saints Stephen and Lawrence, angels or the Final Judgment.

In the 16th century, Alonso de Covarrubias designed the apse with Plateresque dome of coffers in the main chapel; and later covered the paintings, which lost its traces until the first third of the 20th century in which these were rediscovered. It was not until the 1940s that these were recovered where possible.
