One Day in Szeged, Hungary: Top Things to See and Do (Just Walking) in One Day
The third largest city in Hungary, Szeged lies to the south of the country, near the borders of Serbia and Romania. The city has a long history, dating back to medieval times. Since it was destroyed in the flood in 1879, the majority of Szeged attractions you can enjoy today date to the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The Szeged of today has magnificent buildings, beautiful parks and squares, and is home to one of the best universities in the country. The city centre is a lovely place to walk around, with wide pedestrianised streets lined with Neoclassical and Art Nouveau style buildings. Szeged is also known as the City of Sunshine, because it has the highest number of sunny days in Hungary. Since Szeged University is one of the most important higher education institutions in Hungary, you can expect the large student population in the city and everything that comes with it: a wonderfully vibrant atmosphere, numerous cultural events, restaurants, cafes, etc.

This protected sand steppe is located near Mórahalom in Csongrád County. Kéziratban fennmaradt szakácskönyvében egy tejfeles, túróval, rizskásával, mákkal, almával és káposztával megtöltött tésztáról írt. A rétes igazi hódító útjára a XIX. században indult a Habsburg Birodalom területén. Ebben a térségben népszerűsége a 21. században is töretlen.
Elderflower, Mórahalom - Tourism Assets on the Southern Great Plain
In the sweltering heat, there is nothing better than a cool elderflower soft drink under a shady tree. On the Börcsök farmstead outside Mórahalom, the owner uncorked one of his last bottles of elderflower syrup for us so that we could have a taste. We came here for the recipe of this delicious drink. Even at the table while sipping the beverage we could smell the intoxicating aroma of the elder tree that stands at the entrance.
According to legend, fairies live in these shrubs and we harm them when we clip off the flowers.

Paprika, Mórahalom - Tourism Assets on the Southern Great Plain
They are preparing to plant pepper plants on the estate of László Csányi in Mórahalom. The production of paprika is a tradition in the family of the vice-mayor, although it is true that they did give up raising this labor-intensive plant for a while in the 1990s. However, when the town decided to revitalize the cultivation of this crop in 2012, they were amongst the first to plant their fields with peppers. Listening to him, we can understand why so many people are reluctant to cultivate this plant.
Buffalo Reserve on Lake Nagyszéksós, Mórahalom – Tourism values in the Southern Great Plain
Just a few kilometres from Mórahalom, Lake Nagyszéksós is one of the valuable saline-type habitats of the Danube-Tisza Interfluve. Its water is provided by precipitation as well as by the rising groundwater. There is a real bird paradise here. Domestic water buffalos also live here. The animals, the wild species of which can only be found in the fens of East India now, were probably domesticated in China six thousand years ago. They arrived in the Carpathian Basin with the Pannonian Avars, but their breeding in Hungary did not begin until the 16th century. However, the husbandry of the animals, which were mainly used as draught animals, ceased almost completely after World War II. Most of them now live in reserves like this one on Lake Nagyszéksós. Their relocation here was a deliberate decision, as this area had dried up and became almost completely reedy in the early nineties.
On the Sand Ridge by bike Zákányszék, Domaszék – Tourism values in the Southern Great Plain
It can be spring, summer, autumn, or even winter, we can discover the Sand Ridge or our bikes. We can do this on our own, but also with a smaller or bigger company. The potential of bicycle tourism is utilized in many ways in the town of Mórahalom that is 20 kilometres from Szeged and 10 kilometres from the Hungarian-Serbian state border in the Sand Ridge area. The planning of programmes is also supported by the establishment of a safe bicycle path network in and around the city. There are plenty of attractions that you can reach on two wheels. For those who do not want to cycle so much, only after 5 kilometres of easy cycling you can reach the Buffalo Reserve or the Csipak-fen, which is a protected sandy steppe. For those who are braver, they can take a full-day hike to Palić in Vojvodina, which is about 70-kilometre-long round trip. In Mórahalom it is okay if you arrive without a bicycle, because you can rent one, and even the smaller or bigger problems can be fixed.
