MURCIA Spain - Exploring The Region Of Murcia, Lorca, Archena And La Manga Del Mar Menor

On this trip, we explore Murcia, the historic region of Spain and its coastline, the Costa Calida on the Southeast of Spain.

Just an hour from Alicante airport was our first stop in the Region of Murcia, Archena. The town of Archena is home to a hot water mineral spa dating back to Roman times.

Next, it’s off to the city of Murcia itself, the capital of the region. In Murcia, we visit the Santa Clara Monastery the Real Casino with its English library and elegant Viennese Ballroom and the impressive Cathedral de Santa Maria with its grand baroque facade.

In the historic town of Lorca, we visit the Museo Azul de la Semana Santa MASS and the Museo de Bordados del Paso Blanco MUBBLA
These two museums are full of ornate embroideries which are used in the Lorca Holy Week parades.

When you are in #Murcia you should also visit the Calblanque Regional Park one of the last unspoilt areas on the Mediterranean coast and nearby Cabo de Palos with its lighthouse.

If you want to look 10 years young try the Mar Menor mud baths, I don’t think it worked for me!

We end the day on a boat cruise leaving from La Manga del Mar Menor and cruising past the five islands of the Mar Menor which is a coastal saltwater lagoon.

Murcia also has some excellent wine and on the last day, we take a trip to one of the highest areas of Murcia, Bullas where they make some excellent wine.

LORCA Murcia Spain | Drone footage [4K]

Lorca is a city in the southeast of Spain, in the autonomous community of Murcia. It is located in the Guadalentín River valley, about 60 km from the Mediterranean Sea. Lorca is the second most populous city in the region, after Murcia.

Lorca is a modern city with a well-preserved historic center. The city is known for its Baroque architecture, its Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations, and its delicious gastronomy.

Lorca has a long and rich history, dating back to the Iron Age. The city was successively ruled by the Romans, the Visigoths, the Muslims, and the Christians. Lorca was particularly prosperous during the Muslim period, when it was a major center of trade and culture.

In the 19th century, Lorca experienced a period of rapid industrialization. The city became a major center for textile production and mining. However, the city's economy suffered a severe setback in the early 20th century, due to the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent economic crisis.

In recent years, Lorca has undergone a period of economic and cultural revival. The city is now a popular tourist destination, known for its rich history, culture, and gastronomy.

Some of the most popular attractions in Lorca include:

The Fortress of the Sun is a medieval castle that is considered to be the city's most iconic landmark. The castle offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

The Santa María Collegiate Church is a Baroque church that is one of the most impressive examples of Baroque architecture in Spain.

The Archbishop's Palace is a Baroque palace that is now a museum. The museum houses a collection of art and artifacts from Lorca's history.

The Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebrations in Lorca are some of the most elaborate and colorful in Spain. The processions feature hundreds of participants and elaborate floats.

The Lorca Gastronomy is a mixture of traditional Murcian cuisine and Mediterranean influences. Some of the most popular dishes include arroz caldero (rice with seafood), zarangollo (a scrambled egg dish with vegetables), and michirones (a chickpea stew).

Lorca is a vibrant and historic city with something to offer everyone. Whether you are interested in history, culture, food, or simply relaxing in a beautiful setting, Lorca is the perfect place for you.

Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Castle of Lorca

Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Castle of Lorca

Lorca Castle (Spanish: Castillo de Lorca) in Lorca, Murcia, Spain, is a fortress of medieval origin constructed between the 9th and 15th centuries. It consists of a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, made the town and the fortress an impregnable point in the southeast part of the Iberian Peninsula. Lorca Castle was a key strategic point of contention between Christians and Muslims during the Reconquista. It is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest. It is 640 m long and 120 m wide, and one of the largest castles in Spain.

Archaeological excavations have revealed that the site of the castle has been inhabited since Neolithic times. There were archaeological excavations conducted between 1999 and 2011, in conjunction with other excavations conducted in the centre of the town of Lorca. The excavations revealed the existence of an Argaric town that extended from the castle to the actual site of the current town. The excavations revealed funerary sites, homes, and a wall.

It has not been determined exactly when a castle or fortress was first built on the hill. The first written documentation referring to a castle at Lorca is of Muslim origin, which in the 9th century, indicates that the city of Lurqa was an important town in the area ruled by Theudimer (Tudmir), who ruled seven cities in southeastern Spain, mentioned in the Treaty of Orihuela that was preserved by the Andalusian historian Ibn Adarí in the thirteenth century: Orihuela, Valentila (possibly an equivalent for Valencia), Alicante, Mula, Bigastro, Eyya (probably Ojós), and Lorca.

During Muslim rule, Lorca Castle was an impregnable fortress and its interior was divided into two sections by the Espaldón Wall. In the western part, there was an area used to protect livestock and grain in times of danger. The eastern part had a neighbourhood called the barrio de Alcalá.

Lorca was conquered by the Castilian Infante Don Alfonso, the future Alfonso X, in 1244, and the fortress became a key defensive point against the Kingdom of Granada. For 250 years, Lorca Castle was a watchpoint on the border between the Christian kingdom of Murcia and the Muslim state of Granada.

Lorca Taller del Tiempo (“Lorca Time Workshop”) is a company that uses the castle as a theme park for medieval re-enactments and includes a touristic train that travels throughout the city, departing from the Visitor Centre (formerly the Convent of La Merced).
