Oviedo, Asturias, Spain, Europe

Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain and the administrative and commercial centre of the region. It is also the name of the municipality that contains the city. Oviedo is located approximately 20 km (12 mi) to 25 km (16 mi) south of neighbouring cities Gijón and Avilés, which lie on the shoreline of the Bay of Biscay. Its proximity to the ocean causes Oviedo to have a maritime climate, in spite of it not being located on the shoreline itself. Oviedo is located in the centre of Asturias between the Nalón River and Nora River. To the north lie Las Regueras and Llanera, to the south Mieres and Ribera de Arriba, to the east Siero and Langreo, and to the east Grado and Santo Adriano. The altitude of Oviedo is between 80 and 709 metres above sea level. The city is protected against strong winds by Monte Naranco in the north and the Sierra del Aramo in the south. The city centre is rather hilly. Oviedo contains a very rich architectural history, with many buildings dating back to the early medieval period. Many of the building projects were undertaken during Alfonso II's (791-842) reign and Ramiro I's (842-850) reign. Alfonso III's contributions are not as well documented. Alfonso II is said to have built four churches, one dedicated to Christ the Saviour, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Tyrsus, and SS Julian and Basilissa. There are few traces of the churches dedicated to the Saviour, the Virgin Mary, and St. Tyrsus. The San Salvadore church, which was dedicated to the Saviour, is likely beneath the Cathedral of Oviedo. The church of Santa Maria de la Corte, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was demolished in 1702. As for St. Tyrsus, the church dedicated to him exists today as the church of San Tirso. Only a wall and a three light window are believed to have been built by Alfonso II, the majority of the rest of the church is dated to the 14th century. The best preserved church constructed during Alfonso II's time was San Julian de los Prados. Two buildings are said to have been built during Ramiro I's reign, one was a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the other construction was a palace. These were built just outside Oviedo, on Monte Lignum. The church Santa Maria de Naranco seems to originally have been a palace, but later repurposed into a church. The church has an atypical plan from other churches at its time, possibly because it was supposed to contain a throne room for the king. The other church built during Ramiro I's time was San Miguel de Lillo. The Chronicle of Albelda, one of the primary sources used to discern which King commissioned which building, only extends to 883. Because of this, constructions undertaken during Alfonso III's time as king were not documented.

(=Roman bridge of Cangas de Onís)

The Roman bridge of Cangas de Onís or Puentón is a construction located on the river Sella as it passes through Cangas de Onís , and that separates the councils of Cangas de Onís and Parres , belonging, therefore, half to each council . His figure is associated with the town of Cangas de Onís.

El Puentón is one of the symbols of Asturias. It is part of the coat of arms of Cangas de Onís, together with the cross on the inverted crescent that recalls the victory over the Muslims in the Battle of Covadonga and the legend Minima urbium, maxima sedium (smallest city, maximum headquarters).

In 1931 it was declared a Historic Artistic Monument . In its surroundings, many riverside salmon from the Sella River area usually go fishing.

Although it is known as the Roman bridge, it is a medieval construction dating from the reign of Alfonso XI of Castile with its famous banded arch and two other minor arches that are uneven. The bridge, which is located on the Roman road that linked the towns of Lucus Asturum (present-day Lugo de Llanera ) and Portus Victoriae (present-day Santander ), was built on a previous one that could have Roman origin.

The original bridge consisted of seven arches and has been restored and repaired many times throughout its existence. In 1876 it underwent an in-depth repair that is marked by a tombstone in the center of it. It was also restored in the 1940s and 1943. It ceased to provide road service with the construction of a new bridge at the end of the 19th century. In the restoration work, pieces of medieval arches used as fillers have been found. In 1939 a large Victoria Cross , a symbol of Asturias, was placed in the center of its great central arch , coinciding with the return of the image of the Virgin of Covadonga from Paris after the Civil War.

10 Things To Do in Barcelona with the kids!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

There’s something to delight everyone in Barcelona. If you’re a food lover then the city has a total of 20 Michelin stars, and if you want culture you’ve got an inexhaustible choice of beautiful buildings and events. Add to this clean urban beaches, world-class nightlife and so much great shopping you won’t know where to begin.

Welcome to Things To Do Channel, Today we’re going to list 10 things to do in Barcelona.

#10 Stroll around Gracia.

This area wasn’t even part of Barcelona until the 20th century, and thanks to its layout of tapered streets and little squares, it feels like a different place. It’s a young, stylish and cosmopolitan area with students and artists, so there’s a multitude of bars, cafes, and independent shops to be found.

#9 Visit the Barcelona City History Museum.

The History Museum preserves a few Roman sites across the Gothic Quarter, such as the temple of Augustus and the Funeral Way on Plaça de la Vila de Madrid. But Plaça del Rei is where you can see Barcelona’s ancient history in detailed layers.

#8 Shop at La Boqueria.

This is an iconic sight and educational experience in one. There’s been a Boqueria market in Barcelona since medieval times, though this exact spot has only witnessed trade for about 200 years. That elegant and distinctive iron and glass roof you’ll see was put up in 1914.

#7 Check out the City Beaches of Barcelona.

Barcelona’s beachfront boardwalk stretches for miles. The westernmost beaches like Sant Sebastià are busier and more touristy but are backed by Barceloneta’s tight lattice of trendy shops and bars with terraces and outdoor seating. As you move along the waterfront after the Olympic Port you’ll find a bit more room and more Barcelona locals.

#6 The Picturesque Casa Mila.

Also known as La Pedrera, as the front of the building looks a bit like the face of a quarry, Casa Milà was completed in 1912 and is another emblematic Gaudí building. It’s one of several of Catalan modernist works to be UNESCO listed and was the fourth and final Gaudí building on Passeig de Gràcia.

#5 See Casa Battlo.

Another of Antoni Gaudí’s most postcard-friendly creations, this apartment block wasn’t created from scratch but was a remodel undertaken at the turn of the 20th century. You won’t need to have visited Barcelona to recognize the building’s roof, the tiles of which are the scales of a great dragon.

#4 See Las Ramblas.

Never mind that a lot of locals shun this sequence of promenades that runs from Plaça de Catalunya down to the Columbus Monument at the waterfront. If you’re a tourist it’s one of those things that you have to do.

#3 Watch an Opera in Palau de la Musica Catalana.

This turn-of-the-century concert hall is yet another piece of Barcelona’s UNESCO-listed heritage. It was built by Gaudí’s contemporary. This was at a time when investment and commissions by wealthy Catalan industrialists were helping a generation of artists and designers to create a new sense of Catalan identity. The hall is a sublime venue for opera, symphonies and folk music, so have a look at the schedule when you plan your trip.

#2 Fundació Joan Miró.

Just like Gaudí, Joan Miró was a quintessentially Catalonian artist, and a visit to his museum will give you a more vivid picture of Barcelona’s spirit and style. The Fundació Joan Miró was set up by the artist in the 60s to encourage contemporary art in Barcelona, and Miró worked closely with the architect Josep Lluís Sert on the museum building’s design. This means there’s a harmony between the venue and the work inside it that you won’t find very often. Within there’s a large collection of the artist’s work, including sculptures, drawing, and paintings. There are also temporary exhibitions of 20th and 21st-century art, and all sorts of collaborative and educational projects going on.

#1 Gawk at the architecture of Sagrada Familia.

This is where to begin your adventure through Barcelona and the dreamlike works of Antoni Gaudí. His minor basilica is a project of incredible scale and ambition that is still only around three quarters complete more than 140 years after Gaudí first became involved. When its spires are finished it will be the tallest church building in the world, and hardly resembles any religious structure you’ll have seen in your life. The Sagrada Família combines several architectural styles including Catalan Modernism, Art Nouveau, and Spanish Late-Gothic, but Gaudí’s masterpiece defies these kinds of definitions when you look up open-mouthed at the ceiling of the nave.

Gijón, Asturias, Spain, Europe

Gijón or Xixón is the largest city and municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. Early medieval texts mention it as Gigia. It is located on the Bay of Biscay, approximately 20 km (12 mi) north of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias. The city is situated on the coast of central Asturias, from sea level to an altitude of 513 metres at Picu Samartín and 672 metres at Peña de los Cuatro Jueces, bordered on the West by Carreño, the East by Villaviciosa, and to the South by Siero and Llanera. The city is situated along the Asturian coast and is distinguished by the peninsula of Cimavilla (the original settlement) which separates the beach of San Lorenzo and adjacent neighbourhoods to the east from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west. It is close to the other main Asturian cities, Oviedo and Avilés. Gijón has a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Atlantic coast of Spain, with cool summers and wet and mostly mild winters. The onshore flow from the Atlantic Ocean creates a cool summer and mild winter climate where severe heat and very cold temperatures are rare. The narrow temperature range is demonstrated by the record August temperature being only 6.4 °C warmer than the all-time record January temperature. The climate is wet and cloudy by Spanish standards, but is indeed drier than other locations on the Atlantic in the country. Humidity is high year-round. Summer temperatures are very consistent as proven by the fact that the all-time warmest month of August 1997 had an average temperature of 20.9 °C (69.6 °F) and no month has ever been recorded at an average high above 24.7 °C (76.5 °F) in comparison to the 23.2 °C (73.8 °F) August normal high. Another clear underlining of the marine influence is that the coolest ever August has been as near the average as 17.9 °C (64.2 °F).
