Mooring for A MELLOW MONTH in the Marshall islands EP67

A mellow month in the Marshall islands!
This week we settle in to life in Majuro.
We organise our cruising permits for outer atoll travel. We do a big restocking of the larder after a few months of travel through Tuvalu and Kiribati. The local shops and supermarkets are well stocked but we have to keep a close eye on the use by dates... .
Amazon is definitely our friend this week as we take advantage of the low shipping rates.
And we finally replace Dave. Big shoes to fill , but Daisy seems up for the task ...

????‍❤️‍????About us :
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Jo and Rob and we are here to share our sailing adventures with you.
In 2016, inspired by the likes of ‘Delos’, ‘Sailing La Vagabonde’ and ‘Gone with The Wynns’, we sold up everything we owned and bought our 40ft, Fountaine Pajot ‘Lipari 41 Evo’ sailing catamaran ‘Double Trouble’. We had no sailing experience whatsoever, so the past few years have been a huge learning curve.
We thought it might be fun to document our travels for anyone thinking of following a similar lifestyle.
So far we have visited 7 different countries and sailed over 13,000 nautical miles.
We have had many unique experiences that would not have been possible in our prior life and we don’t regret a second.
We're both super keen on protecting our precious environment, so amongst other things, we both follow a plant based diet. You wont find any fishing footage on this channel!

Arno Atoll in Majuro, Marshall Islands

Arno Atoll is a coral atoll of 133 islands in the Pacific Ocean, and forms a legislative district of the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands. Its total land area is only 13 km2. Unlike most other atolls, Arno encloses three different lagoons, a large central one, and two smaller ones in the north and east. Its main lagoon encloses an area of 338.7 km2. At a distance of only 20 kilometres, it is the closest atoll to the Marshall Islands capital, Majuro Atoll, and can be seen looking east from Majuro on a clear day at low tide. The population of Arno Atoll was 1,794 at the 2011 census. The most populous islets are Ajeltokrok, Kobjeltak, Rearlaplap, Langor and Tutu. The largest village is Ine, Arno.

People of Arno are well known for their productivity in making copra (the dried out meat of coconuts, from which coconut oil is extracted). Arno women are renowned for their production of the Kili Bag, a popular handwoven handbag/purse, named after another island in the Marshall. Arno supposedly had a traditional love school.

Arno Atoll was claimed by the Empire of Germany along with the rest of the Marshall Islands in 1884. After World War I, the island came under the South Pacific Mandate of the Empire of Japan. Following the end of World War II, Arno Atoll came under the control of the United States as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The island has been part of the independent Republic of the Marshall Islands since 1986.

A Marshallese Celebration and a SAD goodbye EP83 || Marshall Islands Sailing

A Marshallese Celebration and a sad goodbye
We sail up and down Ailuk Lagoon to celebrate a special birthday.
With a new yacht arriving, we head to the southern part of the atoll and meet up with the crew from SV Manna. While we are there we meet up with Emily and Pumpkin and get invited to celebrate Emilys birthday.

We have just enough time to fit some windsurfing in before the party starts.
We then see a good weather window for us to start our trip back to Majuro, so after a fond farewell to Emily and Pumpkin we get ready to leave this beautiful atoll.

Beautiful places to see in the Marshall Islands

Beautiful places to see in the Marshall Islands.

Alele Museum-Library and National Archives in Majuro, Marshall Islands

Alele Museum-Library and National Archives in Majuro, Marshall Islands

Set up as a nonprofit venture in 1981, the Alele Museum is dedicated to preserving the folk arts, traditional skills, historic accounts and oral traditions of the indigenous population of the Marshall Islands. The permanent exhibition features historical photos, handicrafts, artwork and tools. A small shop stocks gifts, maps and books about the islands. Upstairs is the bright, cheerful library, which features a children's reading room and a Pacific section.

The Alele Museum, Library, and Archives in Uliga, next to the RMI Court House, is definitely worth a visit. The entity languished for many years, but thanks to a big effort by a number of caring individuals, it was reopened in September, 2013 after extensive renovations.
Upstairs is the library, which features a colorful children’s room and a separate Pacific Islands collection room. There are many treasures to be found in this room… but you’ll have to hunt them out.

The museum is downstairs and is spread over three main rooms. While small, it is a charming exhibit featuring items relating to traditional Marshallese navigation, warfare, tools, instruments, decorative handicrafts and jewelry, and clothing. Descriptions accompany each object, along with beautiful historic photographs, many of which come from the Joachim deBrum collection.
