LEICESTER | A walking tour of Leicester City Centre
We take a look around the city centre of Leicester, England to see what it's like and what's there!
This is the second time we've been to this great city, with the time before being at Christmas last year.

The city of Leicester is most famous for its culturally diverse scene and world-class universities. Arts and culture thrive in the aptly named Cultural Quarter, where you can find dozens of galleries, museums, and theatres putting on a wide range of events.

In the busy City Centre, pedestrian streets lined with fashion and sportswear stores fan out from the landmark 1868 Clock Tower, and malls include Highcross, with a cinema and global eats. Near the medieval Cathedral, the King Richard III Visitor Centre highlights the 15th-century ruler’s life and the discovery of his grave in a nearby car park. The half-timbered, 1300s Guildhall hosts performances and has a museum.

Leicester has been named as one of the best cities in which to live and work in the UK, according to latest research. The 2015 Good Growth for Cities Index ranks Leicester in the top 10 of UK cities, highest in the Midlands and ahead of London and Cardiff.

Check out the magnificent Roman Jewry wall, the King’s tomb in Leicester Cathedral and the out-of-this world National Space Centre for a journey through time – to infinity and beyond!

Art lovers will be pleased to learn that amongst the city’s impressive galleries is the largest collection of German Expressionist artwork in the UK. You can also find the family favourite dinosaur gallery at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery – complete with the 15 metre long Rutland dinosaur!

10 Poorest Places in The UK

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

LEICESTER ENGLAND / Centre of the City / City Market

Visitando a cidade de LEICESTER, INGLATERRA (2019), a 10a maior cidade do país e uma das mais antigas / Visiting LEICESTER, one of the Oldest cities in England.

Leicester history goes back at least two millennia. The native Iron Age settlement encountered by the Romans at the site seems to have developed in the 2nd or 1st centuries BC. Little is known about this settlement or the condition of the River Soar at this time, although roundhouses from this era have been excavated and seem to have clustered along roughly 8 hectares (20 acres) of the east bank of the Soar above its confluence with the Trent. This area of the Soar was split into two channels: a main stream to the east and a narrower channel on the west, with a presumably marshy island between. The settlement seems to have controlled a ford across the larger channel. The later Roman name was a latinate form of the Brittonic word for ramparts (cf. Gaelic rath and the nearby villages of Ratby and Ratcliffe), suggesting the site was an oppidum.

During the C14th the earls of Leicester and Lancaster enhanced the prestige of the town. Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster and of Leicester founded a hospital for the poor and infirm in the area to the south of the castle now known as The Newarke (the new work). Henry's son, the great Henry of Grosmont, 4th Earl of Lancaster and of Leicester, who was made first Duke of Lancaster, enlarged and enhanced his father's foundation, and built the collegiate Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady of The Newarke. This church (a little of which survives in the basement of the Hawthorn Building of De Montfort University) was destroyed during the reign of King Edward VI. It became an important pilgrimage site because it housed a thorn said to be from the Crown of Thorns, given to the Duke by the King of France. The church (described by Leland in the C16th as not large but exceeding fair) also became, effectively, a Lancastrian mausoleum. Duke Henry's daughter Blanche of Lancaster married John of Gaunt and their son Henry Bolingbroke became King Henry IV when he deposed King Richard II. The Church of the Annunciation was the burial place of Duke Henry, who had earlier had his father re-interred here.

Leicester was a Parliamentarian (colloquially called Roundhead) stronghold during the English Civil War. In 1645, King Charles I of England and Prince Rupert decided to attack the (then) town to draw the New Model Army away from the Royalist (colloquially called Cavaliers) headquarters of Oxford. Royalist guns were set up on Raw Dykes and, after an unsatisfactory response to a demand for surrender, the assault began at 3pm on 30 May 1645 by a Royalist battery opposite the Newarke. The town - which only had approximately 2,000 defenders opposed to the Royalist Army of approximately 10,000 combatants - was sacked on 31 May 1645, and hundreds of people were killed by Rupert's cavalry.

The construction of the Grand Union Canal in the 1790s linked Leicester to London and Birmingham. The first railway station in Leicester opened in 1832, in the form of The Leicester and Swannington Railway which provided a supply of coal to the town from nearby collieries.[38][39] The Midland Counties Railway (running from Derby to Rugby) linked the town to the national network by 1840. A direct link to London St Pancras Station was established by the Midland Railway in the 1860s. These developments encouraged and accompanied a process of industrialisation which intensified throughout the reign of Queen Victoria

???? About Me:
My name is Anica and I was born and raised in Italy, Rome in 1998. I'm originally from Bangladesh and I've been living in the UK for 6 years, so you could say I'm multinational. I'm studying Adult Nursing at the University of Nottingham, but I'm probably going to be like those people who study something but end up doing something completely different as a career.

✈️ My YouTube Project:
It's a research about me travelling to explore, interview people and tell you about life satisfaction and living expenses of different cities across the UK. This is so that I can find the right place to live. I hope this project helps you to decide where you want to live next too.
