Places to see in ( Leatherhead - UK )

Places to see in ( Leatherhead - UK )

Leatherhead is a town in Surrey, England on the right bank of the River Mole, and at the edge of the contiguous built-up area of London. Its local district is Mole Valley. Records exist of the place from Anglo Saxon England. It has a combined theatre and cinema, which is at the centre of the re-modelling following late 20th century pedestrianisation. The bypass streets to the town centre close and feature annually in the London-Surrey cycle classic which is ranked by the world's cycling federation.

Just north-east of the midpoint of Surrey[n 1] and at a junction of ancient north–south and east–west roads, elements of the town have been a focus for transport throughout its history. A main early spur to this was the construction of the bridge over the seasonally navigable River Mole in the early medieval period. Later the Swan Hotel provided 300 years of service to horse-drawn coaches. In the late 20th century the M25 motorway was built nearby.

In 1986, the town was joined to the UK motorway system, when the M25 motorway was built to the north. Leatherhead became Junction 9, which has odd non-aligned entry/exit points on the two sides. The town is perhaps most frequently mentioned in the national media as the location of motorway traffic jams and accidents.

The symbol of Leatherhead is a swan holding a sword in its beak. This can be seen on the old Leatherhead coat of arms, and on the Mole Valley coat of arms. The insignia of Leatherhead Football Club includes a swan, as do the logos of the Swan Shopping Centre, Therfield School and the leisure centre.

North Leatherhead or Leatherhead Common is the area north of the Kingston Road Bridge, bordered to the north by Leatherhead Golf Course, Ashtead Common and the M25 motorway and to the south by the railway which forks by the town centre. It includes the town's main secondary school, Therfield School, and part of the Trinity School, as well as the bulk of the town's social housing.

Leatherhead formerly had a number of light manufacturing businesses, such as the Ronson's lighter factory, but in and around the 1980s many closed or moved on. Recent years have seen the emergence of several industrial parks, and the town has attracted many service and headquarters operations, including well known companies.

Leatherhead is served by Leatherhead railway station. Over the years, however, Leatherhead has had four railway stations, two of which were only temporary and survived for about eight years from the railway's first opening in 1859.

Leatherhead Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Surrey, and around 20 miles southwest of central London, is the town of Leatherhead.

Geographically Leatherhead is situated along the River Mole, just north of the Surrey Hills and immediately adjacent to the M25 motorway which encompasses Greater London and parts of neighbouring counties.

The first recorded reference of Leatherhead dates back to 880 AD when it was known as 'Leodridan' meaning place where people [can] ride [across the river] in Anglo-Saxon. Later derivations of the name occurred, including 'Leret' in the Domesday Book of 1086. A market charter was granted to Leatherhead in 1248 by Henry III. A number of medieval buildings can be seen in the town, including Cradler's House (seen around the 11-and-a-half minute mark), dating all the way back to the 14th century, and the Running Horse pub (seen just before the 2-minute mark) which dates back to 1403.

In 1859 the railway arrived in Leatherhead with a service to nearby Epsom. Today, London is accessible in under an hour with services to Victoria and Waterloo stations via Southern and South Western Railway respectively.

Industry in Leatherhead in the past included the manufacture of lighters and vacuum cleaners. The factories were converted to ammunitions plants during the Second World War. Most of the plants pulled out of Leatherhead in the 1970s and 1980s. Several industrial parks have since moved into the town. In 1986 the M25 opened. Leatherhead became Junction 9.

Box Hill | ???????? Top 10 walks in South East | ???????? Hiking UK | England

A fairly strenuous walk in a beautiful part of the North Downs

Length
Main Walk: 16¼ km (10.1 miles). Four hours 40 minutes walking time. For the whole excursion including trains, sights and meals, allow at least 9 hours.

Two Short Walks, omitting Headley Heath: 13 and 13½ km (8.1 and 8.4 miles). Both around three hours 45 minutes walking time.

OS Map
Explorer 146. Box Hill & Westhumble station is in Surrey, 2 km N of Dorking.

Toughness
8 out of 10 (6 for the Short Walks).

Features
Although they share the same station, this short but strenuous North Downs walk takes in a different area from the Westhumble Circular walk (2–14b). It traverses a series of hills in a clockwise loop north and east of Box Hill & Westhumble station: Norbury Park, Mickleham Downs, Headley Heath and finally Box Hill itself. There are many fine viewpoints and in several places you can see your earlier route from a new perspective. The area is deservedly popular and the famous sites are likely to be crowded on fine weekends, but there are quieter places in between.

This walk is covered by our Club's insurance. Our Club is registered on The British Mountaineering Council (BMC)

It's Monday 22nd of May, and for the start of the week, Vicki & Geoff cover the south suburban area of London on a hot sunny day, discovering that Epsom Down isn't the nearest station for Epsom Downs, that you can sometimes sit in 1st Class on a Standard Class ticket, and oh ... there's a small problem at Leatherhead.

View the progress map and loads more information about the project on the website at:

ROUTE: Purley - Tattenham Corner - Epsom Downs - Sutton - Leatherhead - Worcester Park - Chessington South - Wimbledon - Streatham - Haydons Road - Streatham - Streatham Common - West Croydon - Carshalton Beeches - West Croydon

PLEASE NOTE! This is Episode 10. One of this week's videos (Episode 9) highlights our trip to Manchester United Halt station, from Sunday 21st May. Due to the devastating events which took place on Monday evening at the Manchester Arena, close to Manchester Victoria Station, we will be postponing the release of this video until next week.
