Train trip to Gokteik Viaduct (Myanmar) - from Mandalay to Lashio Train

Gokteik Viaduct (Myanmar): Train trip from Mandalay to Lashio

This is 16hours train trip from Mandalay to Lashio by passing through popular Gokteik Viaduct. Enjoy ;)

This is one of my budget trips because it only cost me $10 including train ticket, food and snacks :D

Goteik viaduct

The Goteik viaduct is a railway trestle in Nawnghkio, western Shan State, Myanmar (also known as Burma). The bridge is between the two towns of Pyin Oo Lwin, the summer capital of the former British colonial administrators of Burma, and Lashio, the principal town of northern Shan State. It is the highest bridge in Myanmar and when it was completed, the largest railway trestle in the world. It is located approximately 100 km northeast of Mandalay.

The bridge was constructed in 1899 by the Pennsylvania and Maryland Bridge Construction Company, and opened in 1900. The components were made by the Pennsylvania Steel Company and were shipped from the United States. The rail line was constructed help expand the influence of the British Empire in the region. The construction project was overseen by Sir Arthur Rendel, engineer for the Burma Railway Company.(From Wikipedia)

TRAVEL MYANMAR 2020 | Yangon | Bagan | Mandalay | Taunggyi | Inle | Lashio | Pyin Oo Lwin in 2 Weeks

Myanmar Travel Video 2020..

I visited Myanmar with my family this year, Interestingly my Paternal side used to live in Lashio (Shan State), Myanmar. My grandfather used to work as a postmaster in Burma as he was posted there by the then British Government in British Burma. After Burma got Independence
the newly formed government Nationalized many businesses owned by immigrants & so many lost their business & jobs, same was with my family where my uncles lost jobs & were in a state of crisis, my father was very young then probably 8-9 years old. He was born in Maymyo (now Pyin Oo Lwin).
The best option was to return back to India where they had some relatives in and around Kolkata. So, then it became a herculean task for my grandfather & grandmother to gather whatever they could accompanied by 6 children (5 of them minor) gathered some help from friends & other resources,
reached Rangoon (now Yangon) where they stayed at Durga Bari, Yangon. Stayed in Yangon for a week or two, got every one passport done from Indian Embassy in Yangon & landed in Kolkata.

To cut it short, this trip was dedicated to my father & my aunt. Seriously they were behaving like kids when they got to visit their school in Lashio, walking in same neighborhood made then teary eyed. For me it was a experience of a lifetime, we had almost covered the whole of Myanmar.
Starting off from Yangon, we went to Kyaiktyo- looked for all the Buddha status inside a cave & the floating golden rock up the mountain, we then went to Taungoo & Inle Lake, got mesmerized by the vastness of the lake & amazed by the simple lifestyle of the Intha people. Straight away we went to
Mandlay, moving forward to Lashio & Pyin Oo Lwin. On way way returning to Yangon we went to Bagan, didn't get to see the sunrise over the thousands of small pagodas. which gives a reason to go back again.

All in all the the food the people has caught me so much that have already started making a road trip plan starting from Kolkata all the way to Bangkok through the amazing land of Myanmar....

Incredible Gokteik Viaduct: Drivers view of approach and crossing, Myanmar (Burma) Railways -Trains

An incredible drivers view of the tunnelled approach and crossing, on Gokteik Viaduct, on the facinating journey from Lashio to Mandalay. The video was shot from the cab of a Chinese CNR locomotive, No. DF 2078, manufactured by Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co. Ltd., which had a 2000 hp CAT engine.

The Gokteik viaduct is a huge railway trestle, approximately 100 km northeast of Mandalay, in, western Shan State, Myanmar, between the two towns of Pyin Oo Lwin and Lashio. When completed, it was the highest bridge in Burma (Myanmar) and the largest railway trestle in the world. It was constructed in 1899 by the Pennsylvania and Maryland Bridge Construction Company, and opened in 1900. The construction project was overseen by Sir Arthur Rendel, engineer for the Burma Railway Company.

The viaduct is 689 m (2,260 ft) long, with 15 towers, one of which is a double tower. The height of the bridge, as measured from the rail deck to the ground, on the downstream side of the tallest tower, is 102 metres (335 ft), whereas the height from the river, as it flows underground through a tunnel at the point where it passes underneath the trestle, is said to be 250 m (820 ft).

SCENIC Gokteik Viaduct Train: Mandalay to Lashio (Myanmar) Journey

????Watch this EPIC rickety train ride ???? going over the AMAZING 100m high Gokteik Viaduct Bridge ????, encountering authentic local life and beautiful scenery along the way. Starting at 4am in Mandalay, I travel all the way through the mountains to the Lashio near the China border.

As part of my December 2018 adventure in Myanmar (one of THE most fascinating countries you'll ever visit btw), I decided to skip the touristy Inle Lake and get myself off the beaten track to Lashio. The Gokteik Viaduct is somewhat known, but few others take the train the entire way from Mandalay to Lashio because it is such a long journey. Most tourists would only ride up to Hsipaw (just beyond the Gokteik Bridge), or even just go from Pyin Oo Lwin to Hsipaw.

It was certainly worth going the extra distance (even if my sore bum didn't agree at the time) since some of the scenery past Hsipaw were even more beautiful and authentic than the earlier parts.

Snacks and food were aplenty during the way as well, and the vendors roaming with their goodies-filled baskets were as iconic as the Gokteik bridge and much tastier.

Myanmar's BEST Waterfall (not Hyper / Haipa) - Dark Horse Falls with Myanmar Adventure Outfitters

THE most amazing waterfalls I've EVER experienced is off the beaten path in Northern Myanmar's Shan state. Water water all around, to swim in, walk on, jump into. What an adventure!

Northern Shan State (near the town of Lashio in Myanmar) is seldom visited by foreign travellers, but has some fantastic unspoiled nature. If you have a sense of adventure then this is definitely for you, and Myanmar is one of the most amazing countries to travel in. Well worth making the effort to get there.

Have an epic train journey over the Gokteik Viaduct to get to Lashio while you're at it:

Riding the Lashio road in Myanmar through Gokhteik

Hill Tribe Trek, Myanmar

Last year during our trip to Myanmar, we embarked on a 10-hour train journey from Mandalay to Hsipaw, a town in Shan State in Eastern Myanmar. Over the last few years, Hsipaw became a popular getaway to trekking Shan and Palaung villages. Our 3-day trek was by far the most culturally immersive experience we had in Myanmar. Not only did we get a chance to stay in villagers’ homes, eat homemade food, interact with locals, and witness their day to day lives, but we got a chance to participate in a rare celebration known as the Monk Moon Harvest Festival.

Trans Siberian Expedition - Prequel Myanmar - Tamu-Kalay-Monywa-Lashio-Muse

With the Nepal-China route closed due to the devastating earthquake in 2015 I had no option but to take the Myanmar-China route to get to Vladivostok, the start point of the Trans Siberian Expedition in May 2016. This was my third drive through Myanmar, the previous two having been during the South East Asian Expedition in 2015. Myanmar is a country that never ceases to amaze me. I have seen its transformation in a dozen years between 2003 and 2015. It has not been short of the extraordinary. People make the land, and it is so true of Myanmar. Despite the convulsions it has undergone in the past the people are so disarmingly simple and friendly.
I crossed over from India to Myanmar over the Friendship Bridge between Moreh and Tamu. On the fourth day I reached the border town of Muse driving through some exhilarating terrain and in the excellent company of Htoo Htet Aung (the guide), Ms. Hnin Thita (government representative) and Ms. Pyae (from the tour company). Driving through Myanmar is an expensive affair with the government mandating procedures and personnel to accompany the tourist.

Visit Myanmar 1996

During my visit in Kandy/Sri Lanka in 1995, I stayed for a few days at the “Burmese Rest”, a little guest house operated by a Burmese monk. Every morning, he told me stories about “Myanmar”, a country somewhere between India and Thailand, an extraordinary country with golden pagodas, beautiful landscapes and graceful people.
On my way from China to Australia, I decided to visit Myanmar, which I only knew from this Burmese monk. Beginning 1996, I crossed the border from China to Muse, followed the old “Burma Road” to Lashio and continued by train via Pyin Oo Lwin to Mandalay. The following video shows some of the highlights during my first visit.

Gokteik Viaduct, Shan State, Myanmar

One of the most exciting train trips in the world. The spectacular Gokteik Viaduct is on the train line between Mandalay and Lashio in Shan State, Myanmar.

Walking/Biking Around Hsipaw (Myanmar)

Hsipaw / သီပေါ / သီႇပေႃ, also known as Thibaw, is the principal town of Hsipaw Township in Shan State, Myanmar on the banks of the Duthawadi River. It is 200 km (124 mi) north-east of Mandalay. Hsipaw State was perhaps one of the most well known and powerful saopha Shan States and the Sawbwas of Hsipaw lived in the Shan Palace at the northern end of the town.

Every day, a train makes it laborious way up from Mandalay, via steep hills and a breathtaking gorge, to Hsipaw (and onward to Lashio). One of the 'must do' railway journeys of the world, the railway line between Pyin u Lwin and Hsipaw is a masterpiece of British engineering, designed primarily to bring trade (and thus control) to the Northern Shan State, an important ally of the British after the conquest of Upper Burma.

The train from Mandalay to Hsipaw takes 11 hours and costs less that 2000Ky or 4000Ky First Class, if you buy in the train station. The train leave at 4am. The journey from Pyin oo Lwin to Hsipaw takes seven hours and costs Kyat 2750 First Class (Upper Class) or Kyat 1200 Second Class (Ordinary Class). Many travelers do the Pyin oo Lwin (Maymyo) to Hsipaw section one way and return by road (7 hours by train, 4 hours by road). Lashio is four hours from Hsipaw by train. The train from Hsipaw to Mandalay (and Pyin Oo Lwin) leaves at 09:40 and arrives in Mandalay at 22:40 (to Pyin Oo Lwin at around 16:00).
