Nobody Visits This Part Of Puerto Rico...Find Out Why

I took the tram up to the Mercado de Rio Piedras. Walking past graffiti-covered shop after shop this was a different world than the movie set of old San Juan propped up by pastel-painted buildings and cruise ship dollars. This was the guts of San Juan and it is reeling. A failing economy, not yet recovered from the devastating Hurricane Maria in 2017.

The Mercado had the bones of an eerie dystopian wing of the Mall of America. Vendors’ pride in their stalls shined through like a flower growing out of concrete. Nicely arranged fruit stalls, a Barber that was neat and orderly, a well-stocked butcher case. I stopped by the cafeteria, dotted with a handful of full-time loiterers but found a couple of bright food stalls cooking Puerto Rican comfort dishes. There was a line of 4-5 women at one so I ate there. I ordered a bowl of Sancocho which was solid. It was served with mangú, a delicious plantain mash engineered to leave any appetite satiated.

It all felt odd, I felt like a trespasser into the heart of the struggles of the country, the area had the undeniable stillness and quiet of unemployment. But in that Mercado, people were doing their best, the stalls were still open, meals were being prepped, mangos and avocados being neatly displayed amongst a dreary backdrop. A symbol of resilience, the Mercado beats on.

The BEST Things to do in OLD SAN JUAN Puerto Rico | 48 Hrs in San Juan

Trade winds caress your face as you stand atop a 15th-century fortress in a UNESCO City staring out across the ocean lapping at the cliff edges as it has for centuries. Visitors pass by but you just reside in the stillness and friendship of the Iguana basking in the sun at your side. You get hungry and decide to head into the Old San Juan center to a restaurant along Fortaleza street. A wild-haired woman ushers you in, as she shoos two pigeon residents out of her restaurant that has been run by her family for years. You sit down and she hands you a local Medalla beer, you sip it, and realize that all your cares about life at home were washed down with that first sip of your cold beverage.

This is what I experienced anyway when I visited Old San Juan in May of 2022. I was there for a travel conference and was so enamored by the sites of Old San Juan and history here, I ended up ditching the conference to really DO what we were there to learn about - exploring and reporting better on cities from around the world.

There is a big difference between San Juan and Old San Juan, you see the difference in centuries collide within a matter of 1-2 minute drive through the city. You see the Spanish influence in the Castillos and fortresses, feel the religious devotion to the grandeur of the Chapel of St John, and learn about the miracle that influenced the Chapel of Christ. Walking along the blue cobblestone streets of San Juan is sure to delight every visitor, but there are a few suggestions and tips to visit that I will explain more in my article (link below) and in my video.

“Salitral” at Salt Flats/ Las Salinas. Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. October 2022.

Casually called: “pink beach” is an amazing place to visit in Cabo Rojo. Plan a day and stop at “Centro Interpretativo las Salinas de Cabo Rojo”, then go down road PR-301 and stop at salt flats. Look out for an open entrance, you are not trespassing. Continue the main road to “Los Morillos Lighthouse” and “La Playuela” (dirty beach). Many interesting places to visit in one day. Check out for my future videos of “Centro interpretativo Las Salinas” and “Los Morillos lighthouse”. Did not go to “ La Playuela”.(which I regret) instead stopped at the Salt Flats again. The water was at its most vibrant pink hue in that afternoon sunny day.
Roads are really bad. Once you leave the salt flats roads are dangerous, big holes. I almost turned around and was going to miss “Los Morillos Lighthouse”. I’m glad I didn’t. Some cars turned around.

IMPRESIONANTES PIEDRAS BLANCAS!!! ????‍♂️????????????
