In contrast, the south of Tenerife has an arid landscape with golden sandy beaches and busy resorts. The capital city of Tenerife is Santa Cruz.

The Canary Islands are located off the west coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean and Santa Cruz de Tenerife is it's joint capital! The city is the center of maritime industry and tourism and with sub tropical temperatures round the year, its easy to fall in love with this place.
Besides opting for one of the several low-cost airlines which serve the islands, you can also cruise your way here by taking a ferry from mainland Europe. Once arrived at the docks, it's a quick 5 minute walk to the center, which is also known as Plaza de Espana!
The plaza's location on the seafront makes it a good meeting place and a great starting point when exploring the city. The Plaza de Espana is a mega photo point for all the visiting tourists. There are several monuments here with the most distinctive being the memorial dedicated to the 39 residents of the island who fought and died on Franco's side in the Civil War in the 1930s.
As you can see, the center is so close to the marina and the ferry port that you can actually see the ships from here! Another nice thing about the city is that it's very WiFi friendly! In fact, the center is actually a free wifi zone set up by the town hall and I was told that on hot days, you'd often see locals and tourists alike sitting at a square with their feet dipped in water and tapping away on their smartphone screen for hours!
I really liked this location! It was also very close to the main shopping streets with several cafes and restaurants alongside.
The Market of Nuestra Señora de Africa - best place to buy the most fresh produce from this island for example bananas, tomatoes, papayas, cheese and so on. We'll go after exploring the walking street!
About the walking street, speaking to some locals I found out that this street has some really high end expensive shops and they're mostly aiming at the tourists i.e. the locals mostly come here for window shopping or for a casual stroll but not really for actual shopping. I think this is the same for most of the walking streets world wide! The locals are smart and they know better!
Anyway, did you know that Tenerife is home to more than one million people? Yeah, that's right. In fact, nearly half of the residents of Tenerife live in this city. For me this was hard to imagine because I hardly saw any people when traveling around the island away from the center!
It's a small island, travel time is less and there are excellent bus services to other parts of the island! So I think a lot can be done within a short time period! Also, I think 1 day is more than enough to explore Santa Cruz, what do you say?

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife | One of the World’s First Tourist Destinations
Monika and I headed off on the Triumph Bonneville to one of the classiest towns in Tenerife, and the original tourist destination in the Canary Islands; Puerto de la Cruz. The north of Tenerife
With it’s pretty architecture, cobbled streets, coffee shops, shops, restaurants and bustling vibe, it’s got a fantastic atmosphere and is very different to the touristy south of the island.
Motorcycle parking is very easy and free everywhere, so you can ride into the heart of the city and you’ll find a motorbike parking bay. If you’re travelling by car, you will almost certainly need to use one of the car parks (very centrally located).
The north of Tenerife is much more lush and there is a strong digital nomad community in towns such as Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Not only is this a good winter sun destination, but it’s also I very good city break destination and would work for a three/four day trip from mainland Europe.
If you travel to Tenerife, I really recommend exploring Puerto de la Cruz. Most people tend to stay in the warmer south- places such as Costa Adeje, but this is a really nice place to spend a day or two.
Out of all of the more popular Canary Islands such as Gran Canaria, Fuerta Ventura, La Palma and Lanzarote, the town of Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife was the first tourist destination.

El barrio cuenta con varias plazas públicas y parques infantiles, instalaciones deportivas, una entidad bancaria, un parque para perros, farmacias, una gasolinera, así como con bares y restaurantes concentrados sobre todo en la avenida Marítima, y con comercios a lo largo de la Rambla de los Menceyes. Cuenta además con una oficina de información turística en la plaza de Las Caletillas.
Toda la línea costera de la localidad se encuentra repleta de pequeñas calas —La Arenita, Puntagorda, Las Arenas, Las Caletillas, de Cho Víctor y del Charco del Musgo.
En este núcleo se encuentra la Central Térmica de Las Caletillas.
La vía principal de la localidad es la Rambla de Los Menceyes, donde se encuentran las antiguas estatuas de piedra volcánica de los menceyes que estaban situadas en la plaza de la Patrona de Canarias hasta 1993.

This Eco avocado plantation (they only use Biological products, not pesticides) is a charming corner to enjoy the peace and the views. The large 10 x 4 m pool (heated in winter up to 24ºC) is absolutely beautiful and the BBQ area with comfortable sofas invites you to spend nice evenings enjoying a meal and a glass of wine. There are only 4 one bedroom apartments (57m2) + 4 two bedroom apartaments (67m2) each with own entrance and terrace, with ample bedrooms and quality furniture.
A visit to historical La Laguna (Tenerife's UNESCO World Heritage Town) ????????
My next stop on my visit to Tenerife was the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of San Cristobal de La Laguna, one of Spain's most historic cities, located just 30 minutes from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the island's northeast coast.
Here, I enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of sightseeing, admiring the architectural wonders of the area (most notably, the impressive Iglesia de la Concepcion and the magnificent Cathedral de La Laguna). There's a lot to see and do in this small suburb of the 'big city', and it's well worth a short stop on your next visit to Tenerife.

The old town contains the most well-preserved seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings on the island and in 1999 La Laguna’s historic centre was designated as a World Heritage Site.
