Cathedral of Almeria | Almeria | Spain | Almeria Spain | Things to Do in Almeria | Visit Spain

The Cathedral of Almeria is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Almeria, Spain. The current structure was built between 1567 and 1616. It is a large basilica with three naves covered by barrel-vaulted ceilings.

The Cathedral of Almeria is the final resting place for many of the former kings and queens of Spain. It was built in the 12th century to honor Saint Isabella, a Catholic queen who saved her country from being conquered by Muslims.

The cathedral is an example of a building that has been built as an impressive piece of architecture but then later incorporated into the landscape. This happened when the original structure was converted to a garden and fountain by the architect Jose Luis Sert. The gardens are known for their intricate flowerbeds and for its Roman-style fountains.

Exploring the sights of Almeria Spain

Exploring the sights of Almeria Spain

In this episode our friends Rocio and Javier show us the sights of their hometown - Almeria. Almeria has had a number of movies made there and there is walk of fame in the city.

If you want some great views over the city then head up to the Alcazaba. This fortress over looks the city of Almereia and you get the most wonderful aerial views - especially as the sun is going down. Famously the site was used as on of the filming locations for the TV series Game of Thrones.

In the evening we were treated to some home cooked Paella , which was delicious and Trudy got her brakes checked.

We hope that you enjoy this episode .

Cerro San Cristobal | Almeria | Spain | Almeria Spain | Things to Do in Almeria | Visit Spain

Cerro de San Cristobal Almeria – Andalucia – Almeria Beautiful panorama of the city of Almeria

From the Alcazaba, descend in a northward direction through the Barranco de la Hoya, a line of wall that reaches San Cristobal Hill was built during the time of King Jairán (1012-1028) in the eleventh century. Here are the remnants of the neighborhood amurallamiento musalla, which descends from the hill via the main street Antonio Vico.

On the hill, known in Muslim times as Monte Laham, there are seven towers, three square Muslim towers, and four semicircular Christian towers. These were built by the Templars of Alfonso VII, who constructed a strong chapel following the Christian conquest of the city under the command of the troops of Alfonso VII in 1147.

On this hill, which has an impressive view of the city, and is located on a large pedestal, is the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, constructed of local Macael marble. It was restored in 2000 and it is said to bless the city and the Mediterranean Sea. It was originally built in the twentieth century (around 1930).

You can visit Cerro de San Cristobal on any date at any time, it is not a closed area, but you also have the option of participating in one of the guided tours organized by the local touristic agencies.

This is Almeria in Andalucia - Spain

Almería is a town and municipality of Spain, located in Andalusia. It is the capital of the province of the same name. It lies on southeastern Iberia on the Mediterranean Sea. Caliph Abd al-Rahman The third founded the city in 955. The city grew wealthy during the Islamic era, becoming a world city throughout the 11th and 12th centuries. It enjoyed an active port that traded silk, oil and raisins.

The name Almería comes from the city's former Arabic name, Madīnat al-Mariyya, meaning city of the watchtower. As the settlement was originally port or coastal suburb of Pechina, it was initially known as Mariyyat al-Bajjāna

During the Spanish Civil War the city was shelled by the German Navy, with news reaching the London and Parisian press about the criminal bombardment of Almería by German planes.

Almería surrendered in 1939, being the last Andalusian main city to fall to Francoist forces. After Franco's death and popular approval of the new Spanish Constitution, the people of southern Spain were called on to approve an autonomous status for Andalusia region in a referendum. The referendum were approved with 118,186 votes for and 11,092 votes against in Almería province, which represented 42% of all registered voters.

One of the main sights in the city is The Cathedral, which has a fortress-like appearance due to its towers, merlons and protected paths, created to defend it from Mediterranean pirates. Originally designated as a mosque, it was later converted into a Christian church, before being destroyed in the 1522 earthquake. In the 16th century it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, whilst keeping some of its defensive features.

Paseo de Coches is a modern seaside promenade with gardens and palms.

Roquetas de Mar in Spain

Roquetas de Mar is a Spanish fishing town just 15 minutes by car from the provincial capital, Almería. It is famed not only for its fishing traditions, which are preserved today through gastronomy and annual festivals, but also as a coastal resort town. In 2016, the population was 91,965, the municipality with the second highest population in the province behind the capital, the 14th in Andalucía and the 69th in Spain.

The 'urbanización' of Roquetas is predominantly a Spanish holiday resort for the majority of the summer months, but it also receives many visitors from the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany. It is one of the two major resorts in Costa de Almería, the other being Mojácar.

Roquetas de Mar is served by the Autovía A-7 on its outskirts and is linked to the town itself by the A-1051. It is the second-largest town in Spain without a rail link behind Marbella; in 2020 a proposal was submitted to build a railway from Almería to Adra via Roquetas and El Ejido.

The best things to do in Roquetas de Mar (“Roquetas” for short) include strolling the seafront. It has one of the widest and cleanest beaches on Spain’s southern coast. There’s even a beautifully tiled promenade you can use to enjoy the Mediterranean seascapes. The well-developed and sunny beach resort town is mostly uncrowded, which can be a big bonus if you’re looking for some peace and quiet.

Roquetas is a great choice if you’re travelling as a family, with a few great features to keep even the youngest family member happy. We’ve compiled all the great things to do in Roquetas de Mar in a day or two, which includes some of the top sightseeing, shopping, dining, recreational and nightlife highlights of this Andalusian seaside resort.

The Cable Inglés: a historical mining railway pier

The Cable Inglés, or English Pier, in Almeria is an ancient loading pier that was used in the 20th century to transport iron from the train station to the cargo ships docked in the port of Almeria. The pier remained operational until it was closed down in 1973. It is an important symbol of Spain’s industrial heritage and the mining and rail boom that marked the century in Europe.
This fascinating iron, steel and concrete pier runs through Playa de las Almadrabillas. It was built to connect the Train Station of Almeria directly to the port so cargo ships could be loaded with iron ore from the local mines.

The Cable Inglés is an important landmark and it was declared a Cultural Heritage Site. Preserving the pier is preserving an important part of the economic history of Andalusia and Spain.
Many railway bridges of the 20th century were heavily influenced by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel. The design of the Cable Inglés used Eiffel’s technique of iron pillars with sleepers to provide the necessary support to the structure.
