Number 5. Hanging Rock State Park
Hanging Rock State Park is one of the best state parks in North Carolina! There are 9,000 acres of natural wonderland near the city full of diverse terrains. It’s one of the most fun things to do in Winston-Salem (though it’s a 40-minute drive from the city).
There are 20 miles of trails traversing steep climbs to stunning views, flowing streams, and waterfalls, the Dan River for paddling, and a sparkling lake for swimming and canoeing. There are opportunities to rock climb or mountain bike within the grounds. It is one of the best things to do in Winston-Salem for outdoor activity enthusiasts.

Number 4. Black Mountain Chocolate Factory
As close to a trip to Willy Wonka’s as you might ever get, this chocolate factory tour at Black Mountain Chocolate is sweet as can be. It’s open to the public for a self-guided tour that tastes as good as it smells. If you take a guided tour, you are sure to learn a lot about chocolate and the intensive process behind creating it.
You can buy all the treats you want to try at the end, and they have everything from hot chocolate to gelato to pastries. They even offer classes where you can learn to make cocktails or pair chocolates with wines.

Number 3. Broad Branch Distillery
Set in a former tobacco warehouse in the Arts District, a visit to Broad Branch is a fun and indulgent experience and one of the best things to do in Winston-Salem.
The distillery is grain to glass, focusing on old-world artisanal techniques of the area. You can sneak a peek at their technical and thoughtful process behind the scenes and treat yourself to a tasting as well.

Kernersville NC 4K (DJI Mavic Air 2 Drone Footage) 42nd Largest City in North Carolina!!

Kernersville is a town in Forsyth County and the largest suburb of Winston-Salem. The town is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. A small portion of the town is also in Guilford County. The population was 26,481 at the 2020 census, up from 23,123 in 2010. Kernersville is located at the center of the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area, between Greensboro to the east, High Point to the south, and Winston-Salem to the west. Some of the farmland surrounding the town has been sold and turned into large middle-to-upper-class housing developments.

The site was first settled by an Irishman named Caleb Story in 1756. Circa 1770, the site was purchased by William Dobson and was called Dobson's Crossroads. George Washington was served breakfast at Dobson's tavern on June 2, 1791. Joseph Kerner bought the property in 1817, continuing to operate the inn; the town became known as Kerners Crossroads. Kerner left his property to two sons and a daughter. Not long after the arrival of the railroad, the town was incorporated as Kernersville in 1873.

There was brief flirtation with relocating the Minnesota Twins to Kernersville in 1998.

In 2001, NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick opened his shop in Kernersville. Kevin and his wife, Delana, were residents of Kernersville until 2007. Delana and her father, former Nationwide Series driver John Linville, are natives of Kernersville.

In late 2005, President George W. Bush visited Kernersville's Deere-Hitachi plant to give a speech about the American economy. In the summer of 2008, former president Bill Clinton spoke at R. B. Glenn High school. He was campaigning for his wife, Hillary Clinton, in the Democratic primary.[12] Donald Trump Jr. hosted a campaign rally for his father and then-president, Donald Trump, at Salem One Inc. on October 19, 2020.

Kernersville, North Carolina: A Rich History Unveiled

Introduction:

Located in the heart of the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina, Kernersville is a town that proudly bears witness to a rich and varied history. This history unfolds like the pages of a captivating book, taking us back centuries to its Native American roots and gradually revealing the stories of European settlement, industrial growth, and social developments that have shaped the town we see today. Covering a span of more than 200 years, this comprehensive history aims to explore the origins, pivotal moments, and remarkable individuals that have contributed to Kernersville's vibrant past.

Native American Roots:

Long before European settlers arrived, the area now known as Kernersville was home to various Native American tribes. The Saura people, a Siouan-speaking tribe, inhabited the region, and their presence can be traced back thousands of years through archaeological evidence. The Saura thrived in the fertile lands near rivers that provided them with abundant resources for hunting, fishing, and agriculture. Their society was organized around tight-knit communities and was influenced by their spiritual beliefs, which are still present in the region's historical landmarks today.

European Settlement and Growth:

The story of Kernersville's European settlement began in the mid-18th century when German Moravians and Quakers arrived in the area seeking freedom of religion and economic opportunities. The town owes its name to both groups, with the name Kernersville derived from a combination of the Kerner family, who were Moravians, and the Quaker community that surrounded them. Initially, the town's prominence was limited to its agricultural offerings and the establishment of local businesses, such as gristmills and distilleries. However, this began to change with the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th century.

Industrial Development and the Railroad's Impact:

The advent of the railroads brought transformative changes to Kernersville. With its strategic location along the North Carolina Railroad, Kernersville became a transportation hub that facilitated the movement of people and goods across the region. This accessibility created the framework for significant industrial growth, which led to the establishment of textile mills, tobacco factories, and brickworks. These industries not only fueled the local economy but also attracted a diverse population of workers, contributing to the town's cultural and ethnic diversity.

The Civil War and Reconstruction:

Like many towns across the American South, Kernersville was deeply affected by the Civil War. The conflict divided families and communities, leaving scars that took years to heal. Kernersville's strategic location made it a key target for both Union and Confederate forces, resulting in several skirmishes and battles that left the town ravaged. Following the war, Kernersville entered a period of reconstruction, during which it faced the challenges of rebuilding its economy and reestablishing a sense of normalcy.

Kernersville's Contributions to Education:

Education has always been a vital aspect of Kernersville's growth, and the town has made significant contributions to the advancement of learning. In the late 18th century, a one-room schoolhouse was established to teach local children, laying the groundwork for future educational institutions. In the early 20th century, the philanthropic efforts of Julius I. Foust, then the President of the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial College (now UNC Greensboro), enabled the founding of the East Carolina Normal School, a teacher training institution that would later evolve into East Carolina University.

Modernization and Changing Demographics:

The latter half of the 20th century brought with it significant changes for Kernersville, particularly in terms of its population and landscape. As economic opportunities expanded, the town witnessed a surge in growth, attracting new residents and businesses. This rapid expansion led to the construction of numerous housing developments and shopping centers, transforming Kernersville from a predominantly rural town into a suburban community.

Preserving History and Embracing the Future:

Despite its expansion, Kernersville has taken substantial measures to preserve its historical heritage. From the incorporation of historic buildings into modern architecture to the establishment of local historical societies and museums, the town has demonstrated a commitment to honoring its past while embracing the future. Festivals and events celebrating Kernersville's history, such as the Honeybee Jubilee and the Moravian Christmas Lovefeast, continue to bring the community together, fostering a sense of pride and fulfillment.

Conclusion:

Kernersville, North Carolina, is a town that exemplifies the resilience and growth of a community through time.
