KAYAN LONG-NECK TRIBE????-Welcome to Loi Kaw | Kayah State, Myanmar | EP04
Welcome to Loi Kaw in the Kayah State of Myanmar. Here we meet the Kayan LONG-NECK TRIBE PEOPLE.
We went to three villages in the Kayah State of Myanmar, most prominent of all them being the Pan-Pet village where Padaung women live. These women wear brass rings on their necks which weight from 10kg to 20kg, for their lifetime.
I was happy to know about the practice of Community-based tourism (CBT) that is being followed in these villages and the other two being, Hta nee La Leh and a Pa'O village.
Then we also went to see two interesting caves around the Loi Kaw region apart from enjoying our time knowing people at the local market, night market and relishing a Burmese platter.

민닷까지는 차로 10시간 넘게 가야하는 길. 미얀마에서도 유명한 관광지인 인레호수를 그냥 지나칠 수 없어 잠깐 쉬어가기로 했다. 샨주의 인레호수는 인따족의 삶의 터전이다. 발로 노를 젓는 것으로 유명한 인따족은 호수 위에 밭을 일궈 토마토나 각종 채소를 수경재배 한다. 관광객을 실은 배의 모터소리가 1년 내내 끊이지 않는다는 수상마을에서 가장 인기를 끄는 것은 의외로 인따족이 아니라 카얀족이다. 인레호수의 카얀족은 고향을 떠나 관광객이 더 많은 이곳에서 일을 한다고 한다. 외국인 관광객은 물론, 미얀마 현지인들의 눈에도 카얀족 여인들의 긴 목은 신기하고 독특한 볼거리인 듯 하다. 그런데 나는 카얀족 마을에서 느끼지 못했던 씁쓸한 기분이 들었다.

불교 국가로 알려진 미얀마에는 최근 무슬림인 로힝야족에 대한 탄압이 국제 문제가 되고 있다. 그런데 카얀족 마을로 가는 길에 의외로 성당이 간간히 보인다. 이곳 카야주 인구 40%의 종교가 카톨릭이라고 한다. 2시간 남짓 차를 달리자 예쁜 다랑이 논이 보인다. 바로 여기서부터가 카얀족 마을이다. 스스로를 ‘숲의 주인’ 이라 부르는 카얀족. 숲을 일궈 만든 아름다운 다랑이 논이 카얀족 삶의 나이테를 먼저 느끼게 한다. 130여 가구, 약 800명이 산다는 판펫 마을은 생각보다 컸다. 카얀족에 대한 정보를 듣고 갔지만 황동고리를 한 카얀족 여인과의 첫 대면은 좀 놀라웠다. 관광지답게 마을 어귀에서는 직접 만든 수공예품을 파는 젊은 카얀족 여인이 여행객을 반긴다. 많지는 않지만 서양여행객도 보이는데 카얀족 여인들은 어디서든 반갑게 인사를 건넨다. 주로 소를 키워 팔고 벼, 옥수수, 수수 농사를 많이 하는데 지금은 수확이 끝난 농한기라고 한다. 마을을 구경하다 한 농가에 들어갔다. “안녕하세요” 반갑게 카얀족 인사를 한다. “예쁘게 봐주세요. 저기 저 남편이 이 인형도 만든다” “가족은 몇 명?” “손주까지 27명,, 너무 많아 놀라겠네” 농한기에는 관광객을 대상으로 이런 수공예품을 판다고 한다. “손주들 보는 것은 좋지만 집에 놀러오면 팔아야할 상품들을 다 가져가 버린다. 다 모이면 큰 솥에 밥을 해도 민족하다” 유쾌하기만 한 아주머니가 목의 링에 대해 설명해주는데, 상처를 보니 또 마음이 아프기도 하다. “아주 어릴 때부터 링을 했다 일곱 살 때 이런 작은 것부터 시작했다. 옛날에는 다리에도 많이 찼고 목 링은 옛날 그래로 차고 있다” 온몸의 장신구 무게를 다 합하면 10킬로그램은 족히 된다는 도무탄씨. “출렁출렁 소리가 나면 아 저기 카얀족이 오는구나 라고 했죠” “어려서부터 어른들 다 하고 있으니 당연히 하는 것이라 생각. 목에 링을 하고 있는 것을 아름다움의 상징처럼 생각하고 살았다” 카얀족 전설에 의하면 용의 알에서 태어난 카얀족은 아름다운 용의 형상을 닮으려고 황동고리를 목에 감기 시작했다고 한다. 관광객을 대상으로 시연도 하는데 보는 것만으로도 숨이 막힌다. “어떻게 이런 것을 평생 끼고 계세요?” “익숙해졌죠. 이제 몸의 일부 같아요” 심지어 잠 잘 때도 끼고 잔단다. 집안을 보여주는데 생활은 주로 2층에서 한다. 방 안 한가운데 위치한 부엌 위에는 내년 농사에 쓸 종자를 보관하고 있다. “이건 카얀족 전통술이에요” 쌀과 수수를 발효시켜 만든 술로 따뜻하게 해서 마신다고 한다. “아- 맛있네” 보통 큰 독에 술을 빚어 집에 두고 마시는데 365일 떨어지는 일이 없다고 한다. “이 술이 없었으면 자식이 그렇게 많지 않았을 텐테” 흥이 많고 재주가 많은 도무탄씨는 핸드폰 모델로 유명세를 탔다고 한다. 그런 그를 보기 위해 관광객들이 많이 찾는다. 특히 그녀의 노래는 꼭 듣고 가야하는 코스라는데 남편이 직접 만들었다는 기타에 노래를 싣는다. 단순한 멜로디지만 가사가 참 좋다. “카얀족은 즉흥적으로 마음을 노래해요. 예를 들어 비가 오면 비에 대한 가사를 만들어 노래를 하죠. 싱어송라이터네요” 다른 노래를 하나 더 청했다. 이번엔 자장가다. 요즘 젊은 카얀족 여성들은 대부분 목의 링을 하지 않는다고 한다. 자신들은 죽어 묻힐 때도 가져가지만, 젊은이들에겐 강요하고 싶지 않은 전통이라는 도무탄씨의 말이 깊은 여운을 남긴다. 유쾌한 도무탄씨와 헤어져 점심을 먹기 위해 다른 집을 찾았다. “이거 한번 드셔보세요” “감사합니다” 마을 투어에서 현지음식을 경험하는 코스다. 바나나 잎으로 정성스럽게 싼 음식들인데 감자, 젓갈, 콩, 계란프라이, 그리고 따뜻한 닭고기탕까지, 거부감 없는 정말 맛있는 한끼였다. “버마족 음식은 조금 단 편인데, 카얀족 전통음식은 정말 맵고 양념으로 검은 후추를 많이 써요” 아이들의 웃음소리로 가득한 카얀족 마을. 마을 한가운데는 성당이 크게 자리하고 있는데 카얀족은 미얀마가 영국 식민지화된 1824년부터 기독교를 받아들였다고 한다.

Long neck tribe (Kayan people)
Women of the long neck tribe (Kayan people), a Tibeto-Burman ethnic minority of Myanmar.
Although visiting the long neck women is a controversial topic, these people already depend on the income visitors donate to them, and there is not much one can do to change this. We have visited this Kayan family in a remote village in Shan state, Myanmar.
It was not clear if the young girl's neck rings are permanent or not.

Fourth of a series of videos from the Mae Hong Son Loop - one of the world's best motorbike riding routes. I've placed a link to the map of the route I took down below. This episode sees me visit Mae Hong Son's lovely Burmese style temples in the morning and then head out about 20km southwest to the long-necked Kayan village of Huay Pu Keng which lies about 5km from the Burmese border. When I arrived there, I was told that the villagers had heard Burmese planes bombing over the border and that 200 Burmese people had come across the border in order to escape. I wish everyone there well.

INLE LAKE is the second biggest lake in Myanmar ????????. We had the chance to visit it during a fabulous one-day boat trip! We saw some wonderful pagodas and artisanal workshops built on the lake.
