Driving in Zimbabwe : Kariba to Harare via Makuti, Karoi, Lion's Den, Chinhoyi along A1 road

Kariba, town, northern Zimbabwe. Situated on the south bank of the Zambezi River and built on the twin hills of Botererkwa overlooking Kariba Gorge and Lake Kariba (one of the world’s largest man-made lakes), the town was established in 1957 by the Federal Power Board to accommodate Kariba Dam’s construction staff as well as settlers. The name means “where the waters have been trapped.” During the five-year construction of the dam, the Batonka people living in the areas to be flooded were relocated, as were animals marooned by the formation of the lake. Kariba has become one of Zimbabwe’s major tourist resorts largely because of its location on the lake and proximity to several national parks, including Mana Pools National Park, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. The town has an international airport. Pop. (2002) 22,726; (2012) 26,112.

Chinhoyi is located on the western banks of the Manyame River, in Makonde District, in Mashonaland West Province in central northern Zimbabwe. Its location lies approximately 116 kilometres (72 mi) northwest of Harare by road, the capital of Zimbabwe and the largest city in the country. Chinhoyi lies on the main road, Highway A-1, between Harare and Chirundu, at the International border with Zambia, about 240 kilometres (150 mi), further northwest of Chinhoyi.

Harare, formerly Salisbury, capital of Zimbabwe, lying in the northeastern part of the country. The city was founded in 1890 at the spot where the British South Africa Company’s Pioneer Column halted its march into Mashonaland; it was named for Lord Salisbury, then British prime minister. The name Harare is derived from that of the outcast Chief Neharawe, who, with his people, occupied the kopje (the hill at the foot of which the commercial area grew) at the time the Pioneer Column arrived and seized the land. The city was created a municipality in 1897 and developed after the arrival of the railway (1899) from the port of Beira, Mozambique, becoming a market and mining centre. It was chartered as a city in 1935. Industrialization during and after World War II led to an influx of population. Salisbury was the capital of the colony of Southern Rhodesia, of the short-lived Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (1953–63), and of Rhodesia during the period of the unilateral declaration of independence (1965–79). It was retained as capital by the new government of independent Zimbabwe (1980) and renamed Harare.

The city is modern and well-planned, with multistoried buildings and tree-lined avenues. It is the site of Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals, a Dutch Reformed church, the Queen Victoria Memorial Library and Museum, the National Archives, the University of Zimbabwe (opened 1957), and the Rhodes National Gallery.

Harare lies at an elevation of 4,865 feet (1,483 metres) and has a temperate climate. It is a hub of rail, road, and air transport (the airport at nearby Kentucky handles international traffic) and is the centre of Zimbabwe’s industry and commerce. It is also the main distribution point for the agricultural produce of the surrounding area, especially its Virginia tobacco. There are also important gold mines in the vicinity. Greater Harare includes residential Highlands and the industrial suburbs of Southerton, Graniteside, and Workington. The most populous of the adjoining townships is Highfield. Area 216 square miles (559 square km). Pop. (2002) 1,435,784; (2012) 1,485,231.

ZIMBABWE: Chinhoyi Caves with Afronomads ????????

Part 3 of my solo backpacking trip through Southern Africa; A few hours after arriving in Harare, I DM'd Afronomads sisters Chii and Tariro Muty and asked if they wanted to go check out Chinhoyi Caves. Despite not knowing me and never having spoken to me before, they spontaneously agreed and just like that I made new friends.

Kariba Zimbabwe

Recent Visit, the distressed ghetto of Kariba and the awesome views and sites

Kariba Ferry to Matusadona, Zimbabwe. Travel guide.

Kariba is once again our departure point for our next destination - Matusadona National Park.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Zimbabwe:
Kariba Ferries operates a ferry service across the lake on their car ferry Sea Lion and its sister Ferry Sea Horse. The 280-km trip across the lake takes approximately 24 hours.
It has two departure points, one from Kariba itself at the eastern end and the other from Mlibizi at the western end.
The government run DDF - which stands for District Development Fund-Shipping service ferry operates scheduled ferry trips to various destinations on the lake.
The best way to visit Matusadona is to charter a ferry from DDF. This 50-km trip will take about 4 - 5 hours depending on the whether. Normally by road the park is reached via Karoi. Eight km north of Karoi on the Harare/Lusaka road turn left through the Urungwe Communal Land.115 km from Karoi, the Sanyati River is crossed. Continue on along the Binga road for a further 62-km and then turn right and continue on for 82 km to Tashinga, which is the headquarters for the park.
From Kariba this route is more than 400-km long and can take up to a full day to cover. From Karoi the roads are either gravel or dirt. The last 80- km is rough and not suitable for saloon cars, and during the rainy season the road could be impassable even in 4x4 vehicles. The trip on the ferry is more enjoyable though, as you can sit back and relax while you ease your way out over the lake.
As you leave Kariba behind small islands appear on the horizon as the captain skilfully manoeuvres the craft on its route.
Dozens of houseboats and other smaller craft are encountered on your way. No wonder Kariba is known as Zimbabwe's Riviera. Lake Kariba is recognised by many as the tourist paradise of Zimbabwe. It is 280 km in length and supports a large population of people and animals along the shoreline.
A wide range of activities are on offer to the visitor - game viewing, boating, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving and houseboat cruises.
But it is the fishing that is probably the most sought after activity, particularly the fighting Tiger fish. Wildlife in the area is prolific and elephant and buffalo are common sights along the shoreline.Other species, which one can see, are impala, waterbuck, zebra and sable.
Birdlife is varied and includes many water birds such as herons and egrets as well as large numbers of fish eagles.
Visitors can also hire one of the many houseboats available at Kariba.
This is the ideal fishing holiday, cruising slowly up and down the lake, stopping to fish at will, and enjoying the spectacular sunsets whilst the captain carefully moors the boat for the evening.
The Matusadona National Park lies along the southern shores of the Lake and the Department of National Parks provides several campsites within the park.
In addition there are many top quality safari operators in this area offering small, exclusive camps staffed with professional guides to take visitors on game drives, walking or fishing.

Binga Beach Zimbabwe

Hello and welcome to my channel. In this video, I try to educate you about the Binga Beach which is in Zimbabwe. Binga Beach lies on the shores of Lake Kariba and is the only sand beach in Zimbabwe. The road distance between Harare and Binga is 549.9 km which is 550km if we round it off…

Brief history about Binga

Binga is a fishing, boating and cultural centre towards the western end of Lake Kariba's southern shore.  It is reachable via tar and gravel roads from a turnoff along the main Bulawayo-Victoria Falls road near Dete/Hwange.   Binga has a tarred airstrip accessible by small charter aircraft.  The way to Binga Beach passes via the airstrip. If you have a sedan or hatchback, you can leave it at the airstrip and walk to the beach.

How much is entry into Binga beach?
At the time of recording this video, Binga beach was free of entry…

Here is a list of activities to do in Binga:

1. Wildlife.

Besides enjoying yourself at the Binga Beach, you get to enjoy seeing wildlife. There are elephants, kudus, antelopes and more….

2. Fishing

Binga is a great fishing spot. Carry your fishing equipment, you can get the bait in Binga, and also boats for fishing are available. Fishing in Binga is an interesting experience, just make sure you have a license which can be acquired in Binga, and the assistance of the local folk who know the tricks of searching the waters.

3. Boat Cruise
You can enjoy the waters of the Zambezi River on a boat cruise. If you love sunsets, then a sunset cruise will be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll have. Enjoy taking ‘sunkissed’ pictures too! Binga Beach Zimbabwe is a must visit!

4. Sand Beach
The most popular sighting in Binga is the sand beach. On the shores of the Zambezi, there’s a sand beach where you can enjoy sitting and watching the waves, feeling the breeze and experiencing tranquility. You can also do a picnic by the sand beach. Just make sure you do not litter. Also exercise caution if you will get into the water; crocodiles can be a huge risk.

5. Crocodile Spotting
The Zambezi River is infested with crocodiles, you can see them basking in the sun. There also is a crocodile farm where you can watch the huge, fascinating reptiles, and get to understand them a little bit more.

6. Hot Springs
Another area of interest are the hot springs Binga. Visitors to Binga are treated to the wow factor of the springs, some located within the town, and others distributed around other parts of Binga . The local folks in Binga say that the water from the springs heals skin ailments and cleanses of misfortunes, these can be myths yet to be proven true.

Accomodation in Binga….
Much of the accommodation in Binga is privately-owned, so visitor facilities are limited and mostly self-catering.  There are some lakeside villa options and small lodges.  The once-popular hot springs rest camp and campsite is still operational, but currently undergoing refurbishment.  A few houseboats are available for hire and one or two lodges also hire out fishing boats on a daily basis.

That’s all from me folks! If you really loved this video, consider subscribing to this Youtube challenge so as not to miss any videos I upload. Upnext is my video about the Victoria Falls and what to expect when you visit Vic Falls. Good bye for now…

Quarantining and fishing, not to mention amazing birding, at Maabwe Bay proves to be an excellent break, and way to kick off our big Zim Zambezi Epic trip.

Zim Zambezi Epic, Part 4: Getting to Matusadona Park in the Rainy Season! (Overlanding in Zimbabwe)

In Part 1 of our Zim Zambezi Epic, we cover our attempts to get into Zimbabwe and across Beitbridge border. In Part 2, we spend 10 days in quarantine on the shores of Lake Kariba at Maabwe Camp. In Part 3, we get to officially move on to our first Zimparks destination, Chizarira National Park. Now, in Part 4, we attempt the difficult task of getting into Matusadona National Park (and to Tashinga Camp) by road in the rainy season.

This used to be impossible, apparently, and one's chances are now slightly improved since the running of Matusadona was taken over by African Parks, and they set about making the road maneuverable, whether the wet or dry season. Did it work? Wellll.....

Next time on the Zim Zambezi Epic, we head to Chirundu for some tiger fishing on the lower Zambezi, and run into a little trouble with the law.
