Crispy TANDOORI LAMB from Mud Sealed Oven! | Jarkurgan, Uzbekistan

After exploring the city of Termez in southern Uzbekistan near the Afghan border, I took a day trip to the nearby town of Jarkurgan. There, I did some exploring, had an awesome cultural experience, and ate some of the best lamb of my life! Come along with me as I eat some crispy tandoori lamb in Jarkurgan, Uzbekistan!

FEATURED:
Otabek:

Jarkurgan is located about 30 minutes from Termez. It’s famous for its crafts and food. I started my day at a local crafts center. There, I’d get to see them make crafts and put on a folk music and dance performance!

My guide took me to the best place to see embroidery and traditional Uzbek clothing from the region. Inside was a woman in colorful Uzbek clothing who welcomed me with a loaf of bread. Then, the women and man inside sang and played instruments.

Each woman had different embroidery, necklaces, and headgear on. What they wear denotes where each woman is in life. The woman in white was a bride, while other outfits denoted a married woman, a woman with kids, and older woman, and then the oldest. The embroidery was very different and the necklaces also have different meanings.

The men wear a specific head wrap. They put one on me, as well as a traditional long shirt, and then taught me how to dance the traditional way. I had a lot of fun learning it!

After the show, I suggest buying some of the crafts there as gifts or souvenirs. They have carpets, clothing, and even ornaments for Christmas trees. They produce the material and their students make them at home. I got some for my daughters and my niece.

Then, we headed off to see the best crispy tandoori lamb in Jarkurgan! I could smell the lamb as soon as we arrived! They took me to the back, where the tandoor is. They salt the meat and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, they put the lamb legs inside, followed by a big piece of meat and fat on top. Then, they put on the top, seal it with mud, and let it cook. After 80 minutes, they pull the meat out.

The lamb looked and smelled so unreal!

I started with a traditional tomato, cucumber, and onion salad called Achichuk with a thick, yogurt-like sour cream. I also had some bread with the sour cream.

Then our crispy tandoori lamb feast arrived! It consisted of ribs, liver, kidneys, fat, and much more! You don’t use utensils for this. You just dig right in with your hands!

The flesh fell right off the bone! It was the best lamb rib I’d ever eaten in my life. It had my mouth watering! After the rib, I grabbed a delicious, dense kidney. It’s very similar to liver in terms of flavor. Then, I had the liver, which was out of this world. It fell apart in my mouth!

Then, I grabbed some lamb fat and put it in the bread like they do in Italy. The fat was insane. I was in lamb heaven! Between the gelatinous fat, tender meat, and nice crisp on the outside, I was blown away! The crispiness on the outside tasted like pork rinds!

We finished our meal with some delicious mountain tea, which helps you digest your food.

Then, we headed to the oldest minaret in Central Asia, Jarkurgan Minaret. It only took 10 minutes to get there. The minaret is stunning and is 22.5 meters tall. It was built from 1107-1109 and has lots of intricate carvings in it. There used to be a big mosque around it, but it was destroyed.

Then, we went inside the minaret to climb it! The 12th-century stairway was super steep and the stairs were tiny. At the top, you get epic views of the area! It’s the tallest structure in the vicinity, so you can see all of the surrounding farmland.

I hope you enjoyed coming on my crispy tandoori lamb adventure in Jarkurgan! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment. Also, please subscribe to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

The INCREDIBLE ISKANDERKUL - TAJIKISTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 74

With the Troopy greased up and the fridge stocked, we said goodbye to the lush green spring city that is Dushanbe and headed North.

The road northbound hugs the mostly raging Varzob river as it winds up the valley through the towering Fann mountains. The road surface here is great compared to the previous several hundred kilometres and in places is perfect freshly laid hot-mix. Leaving the valley floor we passed through countless avalanche protection tunnels before we reached the big one, the notorious “tunnel of death” or if you prefer the less dramatic official name - The Anzob Tunnel. Perched at around 2700m the 5km tunnel cuts through the mountain range to create a connection between North and South Tajikistan without having to cross through Uzbekistan. Something which wasn’t possible until the tunnel was open again in 2015. The tunnel originally opened in 2006 though almost immediate remedial works on the road surface and construction resulted was required resulting in it not being reopened to the public for years. The tunnel was awarded the grim name by locals due to the lack of ventilation, dim lighting, and less then ideal road conditions. Living up to its name we were met with huge water filled potholes, pollution so thick you could only clearly see maybe 20 metres at best, and zero lighting in places besides the dim oncoming headlights of other vehicles. With no emergency stopping bays, or phones to call Tunnel Control for a tow, the worst situation possible would be to break down in the tunnel. Apart from not being able to see theres’s also the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and/or being ‘collected’ by one of the many Chinese freight trucks. Given the road conditions, seeing someone in this predicament is not an uncommon sight. The Troopy however gobbled up the adverse road surface and we made it out the other side and into fresh air in one piece.

The plan once on the other side of the range was to head to Alauddin Lakes. On the way however there is a much more popular lake known as Iskanderkul. We decided, seeing we were in the area and didn’t know when we would be back, to take the 25km drive up the side valley to Iskanderkul at least for a night. Iskanderkul is named after Alexander the Great, Iskander being Alexander in Persian and Kul or Kol being lake in Turkic. It’s said that Alexander and his army stopped here around 2300 years ago on his way to India. When awe arrived we ventured nearly completely around the lake and down a ‘fun’ track to a nice level pad with a great view; a perfect spot to set up camp. The weather was less then favourable on our arrival so Jolie whipped up some pasta for dinner and we bunkered down for the night to wait for the better weather due to arrive the next day. The following morning we weren’t disappointed when we woke to a beautiful clear blue sky day with the bright turquoise lake glistening in the sun and the birds chirping.

We enjoyed the scenery and solitude for a few hours before packing up camp and doubling back around the lake to the Iskanderkul waterfall otherwise known as “Fann Niagara”. The 40 odd meter waterfall flows from Iskanderkul lake with a huge amount of force creating a deafening sound and strong wind as it carves out the cliff faces. The fall itself is tucked in a bit of an awkward position to see so a viewing platform has been constructed which juts out from the cliff face to give a better angle. The platform looks like it dates from the Soviet era, supported by some I-Beams, with round steel tubing spaced about 2 inches apart for the platform. It gives a great sensation of standing on top of the falls though took a little while for some of us to muster the courage to take the walk to the edge.

With Iskanderkul off the list we were back to the original plan and on the road to Allaudin Lakes. Catch the next episode where we explore this crystal clear lakes.

VLOG | Tajikistan | The Pamir Highway, Osh to Dushambe

Two thirty-somethings have quit their jobs to travel the world.

The Pamir mountains towered around us as we crossed into Tajikistan and climbed mountain passes over 4500M and into the most inspiring high altitude landscape. As far as the eye could see, we were the only car in sight along the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan corridor, bordering Afghanistan. This was our most rugged and epic road trip.

Our driver, Shamil, can be contacted at the site below:

Tajikistan, Pamir Highway & Wakhan Valley. Motorbike Around the World - Episode 11

Riding in Tajikistan on the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan Valley. Traveling motorbike around the world.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT:

CHECK OUT THIS TRAVEL SERIES FROM THE START

EPISODE 11
The motorcycle adventure through the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan continues. After a night at Karakul Lake we head all the way back to Khoroch down the Pamir Highway where we take a left turn from the M41 Silk road into the Wakhan Valley. Again we're riding next to a wide river bordering Afghanistan. The road starts out a bit boring being tarmac, wide and when there is none lots of corrugations. We've been spoiled in the Bartang valley and I know it. Second half of the Wakhan is great, wild and at some point you could walk across to Afghanistan if you wanted to. Meet riders and cyclists along the way. In the evening reach the Pamir Highway again and start running out of fuel. Make it with the last drop to Alichur. Last ride through Murghab and past Karakul Lake again but this time straight to Kyrgyz. The sun is setting and those final moments in Tajikistan feel like something surreal. A special experience which I appreciated only more as time passed by. Already I started to think about time and unfortunately these were the final days of not thinking too much about time.

Enjoy this short motorcycle adventure documentary in Tajikistan. Put together with the video footage that I recorded back in 2014.

First Impressions of BUKHARA - Ancient UNESCO Silk Road City | Uzbekistan

After spending one action-packed day in Khiva, Uzbekistan with my fellow content creators from the World Influencers Congress, we were off to our next Uzbek city, Bukhara! Come along with me as I share my first impressions of Bukhara, an ancient UNESCO Silk Road city!

My day began in Khiva the day after our incredible feast at Khiva Karakul. I was super excited to travel to Bukhara, which is yet another beautiful, ancient city along the Silk Road. This UNESCO World Heritage City dates back over 2,500 years and is one of the 7 holy cities in Islam. The city provided many scholars to the Islamic world!

I kicked off my breakfast with some somsas, which are like the baked, Uzbek version of Indian samosas. It was nice and juicy and full of tasty meat!

After breakfast, I met up with the rest of the team as we prepared to leave Khiva. I love cities that are full of history like this! I was also loving getting to know my fellow travelers. It was one of the best experiences of my life!

We boarded the bus and rode to Urgench International Airport. My bag was already getting overweight at 25 kilos, but luckily, we were working with the airlines, so I didn’t have to pay extra.

My fellow travelers and I were all only running on a few hours of sleep, but I was psyched to hit the ground running in Bukhara.

And just like that, we were in Bukhara 30 minutes later! Immediately upon arriving, there were women at the airport offering stacks of fresh, fluffy, and buttery Uzbek bread! We had another 20-minute bus ride and then we arrived at a craft market selling clothing, hats, and more. There was also a band playing and a performer who lifted a bunch of kettle bells with his mouth!

Bukhara was beautiful! My first impression was that this city was epic!

I tried some amazing figs at the hotel, which felt like an old house. It had a sick deck with a view of the minaret. My room also had a view of the minaret! I loved the room. It had two twin beds, which was all I needed! I only had 12 hours to explore, so I was ready to go!

I decided to start this channel to share my experiences and passion for travel with others. My goal with this channel is to share and show as much as I can of the World. My focus will always be on the culture, food and of course the local people of everywhere I travel to! I'm an optimist and always try to highlight the positives of a place rather than just the negatives.Though I will also be bluntly honest at times too! If you love travel and exploring far away places, then you found the right place!

Join me in living every moment to the Max!! ^^

Abandoned village near the Karakul lake – Tajikistan ǀ #shorts ǀ #docatours ǀ #karakul ǀ #tajikistan

????The drive from Murgab to Lake Karakul in Tajikistan is scenically beautiful. The journey takes about two and a half hours with small photo stops and the total distance is 130 km. During the trip you drive over the mountain pass Ak Baytal which is 4655 meters above sea level.
⛰The landscape at the top of the pass is beautiful despite the sparse vegetation. On the way there are green oases where small rivers flow or large puddles have formed due to precipitation. You drive for kilometers along the border line to China. Trees do not grow at altitudes above 4000 m.a.s.l.
????Karakul is a drainless lake located in the northern part of the Pamirs. The largest lake in the territory of Tajikistan. At the lake is a village which looks abondend. But the village is inhabited. About 300 people live in the village and they are engaged in animal husbandry.
