Foreigner Visits Holy City of Karbala, Iraq ????????

Travel Creators (FREE):
Travel Creator School (PAID):

Karbala, Iraq ➖ After spending a few amazing days in the holy city of Najaf, it was time to move on to the next Iraqi holy city. As always, I love to catch the local transport and so I asked the receptionist at my hotel how can I get to Karbala?. She gave me directions down the street, but unfortunately, it was 2 hours until the bus departed. So I got a local friendly taxi driver to get me to Karbala. Once I had arrived, it was time for a hotel hunt. After that was completed I explored the local area, ate some food, and of course, smoked some shisha!

The Arba'een Pilgrimage, or the Arba'een Walk or Karbala Walk, is the world's largest annual public gathering. It is held at Karbala, Iraq at the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual for the commemoration of martyrdom of the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Muslim Imam, Husayn ibn Ali's in 61 AH (680 AD).He is believed to transcend all cultural boundaries and be a symbol of universal freedom, compassion and social justice.Anticipating Arbaʽeen, or the fortieth day of the martyrdom, the pilgrims make their journey to Karbala on foot, where Husayn and his companions were betrayed by the very people who invited him to Kufa, Iraq, and then subsequently martyred and beheaded by the army of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad in the Battle of Karbala.

WELCOME TO KARBALA, IRAQ. This is the site of the world's largest pilgrimage, where every October, over 15 MILLION Shia Muslims walk from neighboring countries to show respect to Imam Hussain's shrine (grandson of prophet Muhammad). Even though I am not visiting in October, I can feel the spirit in the air unlike any place I've ever been.

The mosques and mausoleums are STUNNING, and somehow, I got special VIP access into the back room to meet with the boss... and he gave me permission to film inside. This kind of permission is unheard of!

But my favorite thing about Karbala is the hospitality. You've probably noticed a theme by now - that the Middle East has the most hospitable people in the world and a perfect example of this is Karbala!

The main mosque provides hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of FREE meals to anyone who stops by. I've never seen anything like it in my life... And not only that, but the local people will open their doors to all visitors.

We randomly got invited into a family's home where they cooked us a 10 course meal.

All of that and more in this amazing episode, which I hope will change your perspective about Iraq.

If you're still reading this, just know that I love you and thanks so much for watching my videos and supporting me over the years. I am in my happiest place right now, traveling through Iraq proper, and I'm just so grateful to be able to share these stories with you. More to come next week!

You don't have to worry much about doing it completely.

(Update: The situation has improved in the last few years or so and the calls do get connected most of the times. You can use GPRS for internet connectivity but that only work for an hour or so before Fajar. Also, there are some WIFI Moukkabs but those aren't too reliable either and only works randomly sometimes.

Mardin Turkey

Mardin is an enchanting city demonstrating a cultural wealth and architectural heritage passed down through thousands of years. This timeless poetic city created by the delicate spirit of the mason’s hands that gave form to its stones. Revealing the city to be an architectural treasure chest, the golden stone houses, masterfully and elegantly built on the steep slopes, achieve an extraordinary harmony between climate, geography and architecture. The civilisations and culture of thousands of years are reflected in the staircased streets, small squares and the traditional dwellings of the city.

Traces of the first settlements in the region extend back to the Neolithic Age. The Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, Mongols, Mamluks, Karakoyunlus, Artuklus, Akkonyunlus, Safevids and Ottomans – all these peoples, states and empires left their mark on Mardin, the city of rocks.

Built by Hamdanis in 975-976, the citadel with its excellent stone work stands on a hill dominating the city. Ulu Mosque is Mardin’s oldest mosque built in the time of Artukid ruler, Kutbeddin Ilgaz in 1186. The 15th century Kasım Paşa Madrasah is remarkable for its fine stonework and at the lovely İsa Bey Madrasah from the 14th century you can admire the magnificently carved portal and climb to its roof to enjoy a fantastic view of the Mesopotamian plain.

Mardin is also home to the Monastery of Deyrulzafaran- once the ecumenical seat of the Patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Congregation dating back to 5th century- is the most important religious centre of the Syriac Orthodox Christians. It roofs 3 places of worship from various periods. One of the largest and most celebrated buildings of the Syriac Orthodoxy is the Monastery of Deyrulumur (Mor Gabriel), located in the nearby Midyat county. This lovely county is famous for its silver jewellery known as ‘telkari’, and it has many elegant and historical houses.
