The ancient city of Xanthos lies on the southern Aegean coast that is today known as western Turkey. The ruins are the result of a transient history with evidence to suggest Lycian, Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine origin. Xanthos was once the most powerful city in the centre of Lycia and is situated on the southern tip of the Xanthos Delta on a hill of important strategic value. The Lion Grave, Harpyien Monument and the Nereiden Monument are among the city’s finest archaeological treasures, as well as an acropolis and a theatre. The impressive graveyard complex conceals numerous inscriptions that threaten punishment and curses in order to deter grave robbers. It is difficult to believe that the city’s brave inhabitants had to endure their city being destroyed twice while resisting their enemies. But the myth of Xanthos lives on!

CUMALIKIZIK - Kahvaltısı Ünlü 700 Yıllık OSMANLI KÖYÜ - Bursa
Cumalıkızık Bursa'nın turistik bir köyü. 700 yıllık geçmişe sahip bu eski Osmanlı Köyü bugün en çok kahvaltıcıları ve renkli evleri ile ünlü. Hadi gelin beraber Cumalıkızın sokaklarında yürüyelim ve Bursa'nın bu ilginç köyünü tanıyalım.

Kızık Oğuz Türklerinden bir boyun adı. Zamanında bölgede çok daha fazla Kızık köyü varmış ama günümüze kadar sadece Cumalıkızık, Derekızık, Değirmenkızın, Hamamlıkızık ve Fidyekızık kalmış. Cumalıkızık merkezde olan ve camisinde cuma günü namaz için toplanılan köy olduğu için ismini böyle koymuşlar.

Cumalıkızık 2014 yılından beri Unesco Dünya Mirasları Listesinde. Rengarenk ahşağ evleri ve taş sokaklarıyla geçmişe yolculuk yapmak isteyenler için güzel bir yer. Ama özellikle Kınalı Kar, Kuruluş, Kurtuluş gibi dizilerin çekilmesinden sonra Cumalıkızık iyice ünlenmiş ve haftaiçi bile oldukça kalabalık.

Cumalıkızık'a otobüslerle turistlerin gelmesinin bir diğer sebebi de kahvaltıcılar. Köyde onlarca serpme kahvaltı mekanı var. Ayrıca gözlemeciler de baya çok. Biz gözleme yiyip, karadut suyu içerek sezonu açtık.

Bursa merkeze 15-20 daikika uzaklıkta olan Cumalıkızık Bursa'nın çevresine yolu düşenlerin rahatlıkla uğrayabileceği bir konumda. Yolları da gayet düzgün. Zaten özel araç dışında Bursa'dan gelen otobüs veya dolmuşlarla da ulaşım sağlanabilir.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Turkey
Xanthos-Letoon
This site, which was the capital of Lycia, illustrates the blending of Lycian traditions and Hellenic influence, especially in its funerary art. The epigraphic inscriptions are crucial for our understanding of the history of the Lycian people and their Indo-European language.
Neolithic Site of Çatalhöyük
Two hills form the 37 ha site on the Southern Anatolian Plateau. The taller eastern mound contains eighteen levels of Neolithic occupation between 7400 bc and 6200 bc, including wall paintings, reliefs, sculptures and other symbolic and artistic features. Together they testify to the evolution of social organization and cultural practices as humans adapted to a sedentary life. The western mound shows the evolution of cultural practices in the Chalcolithic period, from 6200 bc to 5200 bc. Çatalhöyük provides important evidence of the transition from settled villages to urban agglomeration, which was maintained in the same location for over 2,000 years. It features a unique streetless settlement of houses clustered back to back with roof access into the buildings.
Historic Areas of Istanbul
With its strategic location on the Bosphorus peninsula between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, Istanbul has been associated with major political, religious and artistic events for more than 2,000 years. Its masterpieces include the ancient Hippodrome of Constantine, the 6th-century Hagia Sophia and the 16th-century Süleymaniye Mosque, all now under threat from population pressure, industrial pollution and uncontrolled urbanization.
Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia
In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.
Nemrut Dağ
The mausoleum of Antiochus I (69–34 B.C.), who reigned over Commagene, a kingdom founded north of Syria and the Euphrates after the breakup of Alexander's empire, is one of the most ambitious constructions of the Hellenistic period. The syncretism of its pantheon, and the lineage of its kings, which can be traced back through two sets of legends, Greek and Persian, is evidence of the dual origin of this kingdom's culture.
Archaeological Site of Ani
This site is located on a secluded plateau of northeast Turkey overlooking a ravine that forms a natural border with Armenia. This medieval city combines residential, religious and military structures, characteristic of a medieval urbanism built up over the centuries by Christian and then Muslim dynasties. The city flourished in the 10th and 11th centuries CE when it became the capital of the medieval Armenian kingdom of the Bagratides and profited from control of one branch of the Silk Road. Later, under Byzantine, Seljuk and Georgian sovereignty, it maintained its status as an important crossroads for merchant caravans. The Mongol invasion and a devastating earthquake in 1319 marked the beginning of the city’s decline. The site presents a comprehensive overview of the evolution of medieval architecture through examples of almost all the different architectural innovations of the region between the 7th and 13th centuries CE.
Great Mosque and Hospital of Divriği
This region of Anatolia was conquered by the Turks at the beginning of the 11th century. In 1228–29 Emir Ahmet Shah founded a mosque, with its adjoining hospital, at Divrigi. The mosque has a single prayer room and is crowned by two cupolas. The highly sophisticated technique of vault construction, and a creative, exuberant type of decorative sculpture – particularly on the three doorways, in contrast to the unadorned walls of the interior – are the unique features of this masterpiece of Islamic architecture.
Hattusha: the Hittite Capital
The archaeological site of Hattusha, former capital of the Hittite Empire, is notable for its urban organization, the types of construction that have been preserved (temples, royal residences, fortifications), the rich ornamentation of the Lions' Gate and the Royal Gate, and the ensemble of rock art at Yazilikaya. The city enjoyed considerable influence in Anatolia and northern Syria in the 2nd millennium B.C.

Xanthos was an ancient major city near present-day Kınık, Antalya Province, Turkey. The remains of Xanthos lie on a hill on the left bank of the Xanthos river. The number and quality of the monumental tombs still standing is a remarkable feature of the site.
Xanthos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Xanthos was a centre of culture and commerce for the Lycians, and later for the Persians, Greeks and Romans who in turn conquered the city. As an important city in Lycia, it exerted significant architectural influences upon other cities of the region, with the Nereid Monument directly inspiring the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus in Caria.
Xanthos is the Greek appellation, acquired during its Hellenisation, of Arñna in the Lycian language. The Hittite and Luwian name of the city is given in inscriptions as Arinna (not to be confused with the Arinna near Hattusa). The Romans called the city Xanthus.

Tepeye tırmanan yol sizi Likyanın başkenti Xanthos antik kentine ulaştıracaktır. Detaylı yol tarifi vermemizin sebebi 2015 yazında Kınık girişi ve içinde bu antik kentle ilgili hiç bir yönlendirme tabelası olmamasıdır. Kaşa 45 km, Kalkana 20 km, Antalya ya sahilden 235 km uzaklıktadır.
Kınık Beldesinde yer alan şehir, Xanthos Nehri (bugün Eşen Çayı) kenarındaki ovaya hakim iki tepe üzerinde kurulmuştur. İlki Eşen Çayı'nın kenarından sarpça bir kayalık şeklinde yükselen surla çevrili Likya akropolü; ikincisi ise kuzeydeki daha yüksek ve geniş olan Roma akropolüdür. Likya Birliği'nin idari merkezi olarak nitelenen Xanthos'un ismi Likya dilinde yazılmış kitabelerde ARNNA şeklinde geçmektedir. Homeros, Sarpedon yönetimindeki Xanthosluların Troya savaşlarına katıldıklarını anlatır. Ancak kazılarda elde edilen buluntular şehrin iskanını İ.Ö. 8.y.y. önce götürmeye imkan vermemektedir.
Xanthos örenyeri, Likya uygarlığının özgünlüğü ve kazılarda elde edilen buluntuların önemi nedeniyle UNESCO tarafından Dünya Kültür Mirası Listesine dahil edilmiştir.
Xanthos'u ilk defa 1838 yılında Ch. Fellows keşfetmiş, bu kişi bütün rölyefleri ve büyük mimari parçaları sökerek, Patara'ya yanaşan harp gemisiyle Londra'ya taşımıştır. Bugün British Museum'un Lykia salonunda buradan götürülmüş olan birçok eser sergilenmektedir.

The city of Xanthos is one of the most popular ancient sites in Turkey. Located in the ancient Lycian region on the south-west coast of Turkey, this city was once the capital of the Lycian Kingdom.

What Can I Do in Xanthos?
The ancient city of Xanthos is divided into two parts by a small ravine that follows the Antalya road. As you enter the site, you will see the Hellenistic city walls that were rebuilt by the Romans.
The Pillar of Xanthos is an ancient monument that was erected near the agora in Xanthos, dedicated to twelve Lycian gods. The pillar has four faces with a long inscription engraved in three languages as Lycian, Milyan, and Ancient Greek.
The inscription, written in twelve lines of Greek, identifies the tomb as that of King Kherei. In this inscription, he is described as having gained a remarkable victory against the Athinaians.
The stele is of extreme importance in the study of ancient languages.
The Agora was surrounded by tall, smooth-surfaced columns. There is also a Byzantine basilica with three rooms and mosaic flooring. The basilica fell to Arabian invaders in the 7th century.
An additional two funerary monuments stand outside the agora. One of the pillars is called the Pillar of Harpies, and it is 7.5 meters high.
The original reliefs from the palace of Nimrud were taken by Charles Fellows, who presented them to the British Museum in 1849. These reliefs were replaced with beautiful casts in the 5th century BC, possibly by Milesian sculptors.
Harpies, winged spirits in classical mythology, are featured in the scenes of offerings. Another interpretation is that the scenes show the afterlife and supplication to Lycian leaders.

EXPLORING LETOON AND KSANTOS ANCIENT CITIES. TURKEY VLOG
On the way from Kaş to Ölüdeniz, I decided to stop for tea and at the same time visit the ancient settlement of Ksantos as well as Letoon.
The current settlement of the ancient majestic Ksantos (one of the three most important cities of the Lycian state) is a village and we were not even able to find tea there, we passed Ksantos itself because there was no sign.
But there were signs to Letoon, another ancient city from the time of Lycia. We drove to Letoon with very little hope to still drink tea. Letoon greeted us with a standard amphitheater and a ticket office, I didn't even really want to go in because I had already seen amphitheaters in my life.
The cashier was a typical Turkish gentleman.
Since he was the only local here, I stood on the threshold of his small office in the yard, where he was preparing for lunch, and asked where to find a restaurant to drink tea or coffee.
The gentleman looked at me in surprise and said, Nowhere, we don't have a restaurant.
And then he adds -
Do you want me to make you tea?
Of course I do, I replied.
I am always very moved by such unexpected offers of hospitality.
Grandpa takes some dried grass, pours boiling water over it, takes a chair from somewhere and shows me to sit down.
I sat down and began to smell the grass, but never realized what it was. The gentleman explained in Turkish, but my knowledge is clearly not enough to communicate.
I sit, taste tea, call friends, ask for more tea because it's delicious. Gentleman sincerely offers his lunch, but of course I refused.
The tea was memorable for a lifetime - fragrant, unusual, and with oregano :)))
And Letoon will forever be remembered for its incredible aftertaste, one of the best-preserved temples in the world, and the energy you can only feel.
Ancient cities rarely give me emotions, because I love stories and feelings, not stones.
After that we found Ksantos and explored the ancient site during lunchtime.
Later we continued our way to Ölüdeniz with a stop for luck at the Lycian path.

Likya Birliği’nin idari merkezi olarak nitelenen Xanthos’un ismi Likya dilinde yazılmış kitabelerde ARNNA şeklinde geçmektedir. Homeros, Sarpedon yönetimindeki Xathosluların Troya savaşlarına katıldıklarını anlatır. Ancak kazılarda elde edilen buluntular şehrin iskânını İ.Ö. 8'inci yüzyıldan önce götürmeye imkân vermemektedir.
Şehir, İ.Ö. 545–546 yıllarında Pers Kumandanı Harpagos tarafından kuşatılır. Xanthoslular, kahramanca karşı koyup direnmelerine rağmen çaresiz duruma düştüklerinde, kadın ve çocuklarını öldürüp şehri ateşe vererek insansız ve harap bir şehri Harpagos’a bırakırlar. İ.Ö. 475–450 arasında Xanthos, bu kez yangın felaketi ile karşılaşır. İ.Ö. 334 yılında Büyük İskender şehri almıştır. İskender’in ölümünün ardından Xathos, İ.Ö. 309’dan itibaren Mısır Hanedanı Ptolemaios’ların, ardından birçok Likya şehri gibi Suriye Kralı III. Antiokhos’un egemenliğini kabul etmek zorunda kalmıştır. İ.Ö. 2. yy.da Likya Birliğinin başkenti olan Xanthos, İ.Ö 42 yılında bu kez Romalı Brutus tarafından yerle bir edilmiş, ancak ardından İmparator. Marcus Antonius’un gayretleriyle yeniden imar görmüştür. İ.S. 1'inci yüzyılda Roma egemenliği altındaki Xanthos’ta İmparator Vespasianus adına tak yaptırılmış, günümüze kalmış Roma yapılarının çoğu bu dönemde inşa edilmiştir. Bizans egemenliği sırasında piskoposluk merkezi olan Xanthos, bu dönemde birçok yeni yapıya kavuşmuştur. 7'nci yüzyıl sonrası Arap akınları şehrin önemini yitirmesine sebep olmuştur.
Xanthos’un her iki akropolü de değişik örgü sistemlerinin görüldüğü sur duvarları ile çevrilidir. Likya akropolünün kuzeyinde Roma Devri Tiyatrosu yer alır. Xanthos’un en ilginç kalıntıları, tiyatronun batısında konumlanır. Bunlardan ilki yüksek dikdörtgen yekpare kaide üzerindeki ölü ailesi ile yanındaki kadın gövdeli, kuşkanatlı yaratıklar olan ve ölülerin ruhlarını gökyüzüne taşıdıklarına inanılan “Harpy” kabartmalarına sahiptir. Bugün orijinal kabartmaları, Biritish Museum’da sergilenen Harpy Anıtı, İ.Ö. 5'nci yüzyıla tarihlenmektedir. Bu anıt mezarın yanında 4'üncü yüzyıla ait diğer bir kaideli Likya lahdi yer almaktadır. Tiyatronun bitişindeki kare şekilli geniş alan ise üç yanı dükkânlarla çevrili Roma Devri Agorası'dır. Agoranın kuzeydoğu köşesinde, Harpy Anıtına çok benzer, yekpare dikdörtgen gövdesinde Likya ve Grekçe dilinde yazılmış kitabe yer alan İ.Ö. 5'nci yüzyıla ait anıt mezar yükselir. Anıtın gövdesindeki kitabe günümüze dek bulunmuş Likya dilindeki en uzun kitabe olup, Kherei adlı Xanthos’lu prensin serüvenlerini anlatmaktadır. Roma Akropolü'nde de birçok kaya mezarı ve kaideli mezarı yan yana görmek mümkündür. Bu alanın güney eteklerde yer alan, Aslanlı Mezar, Pa vaya ve Merehi lahitlerinin kaideleri dışında tümü British Museum’da sergilenmektedir. Günümüz kalıntılarına çıkan rampanın sağ kenarında sadece temelleri kalmış olan İ.Ö. 4'üncü yüzyıla ait tapınak planlı Nereid Anıtı da British Museum da sergilenen Xanthos’un ünlü anıtlarından biridir. Xanthos örenyeri, Likya uygarlığının özgünlüğü ve kazılarda elde edilen buluntuların önemi nedeniyle UNESCO tarafından Dünya Kültür Mirası Listesi'ne dâhil edilmiştir.
Both acropolises of Xanthos are surrounded by city walls with different masonry systems. To the north of the Lycian acropolis is the Roman Period Theater. The most interesting ruins of Xanthos are located to the west of the theater. The first of these features the dead family on a high rectangular monolithic pedestal and the Harpy reliefs, which are creatures with female bodies and wings and are believed to carry the souls of the dead to the sky. Today, the original reliefs are exhibited in the Biritish Museum, the Harpy Monument, BC. It is dated to the 5th century. Next to this mausoleum, there is another Lycian sarcophagus with a pedestal belonging to the 4th century. The large square-shaped area at the end of the theater is the Roman Age Agora surrounded by shops on three sides. In the northeast corner of the agora, there is an inscription written in Lycian and Greek languages on its solid rectangular body, very similar to the Harpy Monument. The 5th century mausoleum rises. The inscription on the body of the monument is the longest inscription in Lycian language found to date, and it describes the adventures of the prince from Xanthos named Kherei. It is possible to see many rock tombs and pedestal tombs side by side in the Roman Acropolis. Except for the bases of the Lion Tomb, Pawaya and Merehi sarcophagi on the southern skirts of this area, all are exhibited in the British Museum. Only the foundations of BC. The Nereid Monument with a temple plan belonging to the 4th century is one of the famous monuments of Xanthos exhibited in the British Museum. Xanthos archaeological site has been included in the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO due to the originality of the Lycian civilization and the importance of the findings obtained in the excavations.

Atların ve develerin sırtında safariye katılmak ve Patara’nın uçsuz bucaksız sahilinde denize girmek gerçek anlamda hem bedeni hem de zihni arındıran bir aktivite diyebiliriz. Patara plajı Antalya’nın Kaş ilçesinde yer alıyor ve kilometrelerce uzunluktaki tertemiz sahiliyle gören herkesi adeta büyülüyor. Bir çölü andıran kum tepeleri de bu eşsiz deniz keyfini tamamlıyor ve “kızgın çöllerden serin sulara atlamak” tabirini gerçeğe dönüştürüyor. atara Plajı denildiğinde akla sadece upuzun ve tertemiz plajlar değil caretta caretta kaplumbağalar da geliyor. Sharing how we managed to shop for groceries for 5 days with less than $10 at the Kas Friday Market, finally exploring and swimming in the world famous Kaputas Beach and having WAY too much fun while discovering Kas at night! This Turkey travel vlog qith give you a general idea of all the many fun things to do in Kas!! We loved this Turkish beach town :)
