This Entire City Is An OUTDOOR MUSEUM - Khiva Uzbekistan

In this Uzbekistan travel vlog, I take you with me as I explore the beautiful Silk Road city in Central Asia of Khiva Uzbekistan. Khiva Uzbekistan is commonly referred to as an open air museum as the old city of Khiva, Uzbekistan is home to tons of beautiful, historic structures and monuments that have been well preserved over time.

To start off my Central Asia travel vlog in Khiva Uzbekistan I step back in time to Itchan Kala, the old city of Khiva. Khiva’s old city is where most of the main attractions are and is where you will want to spend the majority of your time when you are traveling the Silk Road city of Kvia, Uzbekistan. My first stop in the old city of Khiva, Uzbekistan was to the Kalta Minor Minaret, which is the most iconic structure in the entire city, and one of the most iconic in all of Central Asia, and along the old Silk Road. Although construction of the Kalta Minor Minaret was never completed, it still reaches 95 feet tall. Visiting the Kalta Minor Minaret is one of the best things to do in Central Asia for sure!

Next on my Uzbekistan Travel Vlog, I walked over to the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa, which was once the largest Madrasa in all of Central Asia, with the ability to house over 260 students. Now, the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa is inactive and has been turned into a hotel where tourists in Khiva Uzbekistan can get a feeling for what it was like to live in what was once the largest Madrasa in Central Asia.

The next stop on my Central Asia travel vlog, and a top thing to do in Uzbekistan tourism, was to visit the Juma Mosque. The Juma Mosque is one of the most unique mosques I have ever visited, as it is supported by 218 wooden pillars with intricately carved designs. Visiting the Juma Mosque is a really unique thing to do during your Silk Road travel. The next place I visited in Khiva Uzbekistan in my Uzbekistan Vlog was the Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa. What’s so special about the Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa is that it was one of the first Madrasas to teach subjects beyond Islam, like mathematics and science.

Next on my Khiva Uzbekistan Travel Vlog, was to try local Uzbekistan Food. I ate a special dish local to Khiva Uzbekistan called Shivit Oshi. Shivit Oshi, also known as green noodles, is a noodle dish infused with dill and other spices and herbs, turning the noodles green. Despite not being a huge fan of dill, I actually enjoyed eating Shivit Oshi. Eating Shivit Oshi is a must do in Khiva Uzbekistan. After a local Uzbek meal for lunch, I went to the Pahlavan Mahmud Mausoleum, which is the only structure in Khiva with a beautiful blue teal dome. Pahlavan Mahmud is renowned for freeing many slaves in Khiva during the Silk Road trade. His mausoleum is extremely beautiful with incredible designs and colors.

Next on my Central Asia Vlog and Khiva Uzbekistan Vlog, I visited the tallest Minaret in Khiva called the Islam Khoja Minaret. Admiring the size and colors of the Islam Khoja Minaret is a must do in Khiva Uzbekistan. After this, I visited the old fortress in Khiva, Uzbekistan, where the old ruler used to live, called the Kunya Ark. The top of the Kunya Ark is home to an incredible view over the entire city of Khiva. After roaming around the old fortress and the streets of Khiva’s old city, I climbed the old city wall of Khiva Uzbekistan, which stretches 10 kilometers around the old city. This is another great place for beautiful views over Khiva.

I hope you enjoyed following along my adventures in Khiva, Uzbekistan. I really do think that traveling Uzbekistan offers a unique look into a beautiful culture.

We made it to Khiva!! We explored the beautiful buildings around the inner city and checked out the views from the city walls. I loved the tiles and clay architecture. It is probably my favourite city in Uzbekistan.

Transcript:
Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia sandwiched between Kazakhstan to its north and all the other “Stans” to its south. A former Soviet Republic, it gained independence from the USSR in 1991, becoming a country for the very first time.
Tashkent is its capital and the logical starting point for anyone coming to visit the country. And there are increasingly more and more people coming to see this previously undiscovered country. Until 2018 Uzbekistan was completely closed to tourists, following the isolationist policies of its then dictator. But when he died in 2016, his successor decided to open up and welcome tourists. Their new leader realised that tourism could well be its biggest asset, because scattered across the Kyzylkum Desert that covers most of the country, are the remarkably well-preserved remnants of the mysterious and glamorous Silk Road.
Tashkent, like many Soviet cities, has an impressive metro system, in which each of the stations have been elaborately decorated. The metro is like the rest of the city – exceptionally well-planned. But this isn’t just by coincidence – oh no – it’s because the original Tashkent was completely demolished in an earthquake in 1966. This meant that the Russians were able to rebuild Tashkent as the “model Soviet city” and you can really tell.
The city is vast and sprawling, with wide sweeping avenues and enormous civic buildings spread out across the city centre. Tashkent is the biggest city in Central Asia and it’s not a city that you want to get around on foot. Ignoring the temperatures in the high thirties, the distance between monuments is vast. Thank heavens for that metro then!Or you can take a taxi. And even that is unusual, because almost every car on the road is a white Chevrolet, making even the traffic look like its been city-planned by the government!
Tashkent is nice, for sure, but the real reason we went to Uzbekistan was to head out onto the Silk Road. We decided to head to Khiva first, the furthest stop on our trip, before heading back to Bukhara, Samarkand and then looping back to Tashkent again. The stops closest to Tashkent are linked by high speed bullet-trains, but to get to Khiva we needed to jump on a fourteen hour overnight train. Sleeping in Soviet-era carriages, we had our own cabin and settled down for the night heading west. Only to wake up in the middle of the desert!
Eventually, we arrived at our destination. Khiva. The walled city of Khiva dates back fifteen hundred years and its centre, known as Itchan Kala, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside these walls are over three hundred protected buildings, most of which date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Historically, Khiva was the capital of a Khwarezmian Civilisation, which covered the western portion of Uzbekistan, as well as southwestern Kazhakstan and most of Turmenistan. Khiva was an important stop on the Silk Road. So, what exactly was that? The civilisations in Europe and Asia have always been separated by vast deserts and mountains, but between the second century BCE and the fifteenth century, trade routes were established between the two. A network of linked cities were established spanning over 4000 miles, linking China in the East to Istanbul in the West. It was incredibly rare for one person to travel the length of the Silk Road, with goods being traded merchant to merchant in various trading posts along the route. Trading posts like Khiva. And these trading posts became extremely wealthy, due to the amount of money and goods passing through their gates. Silk, spices, tea, ivory, cotton, wool and precious metals, all were traded along the route. It also traded philosophical ideologies and… well, it brought the Black Death to Europe too. However, when a route was discovered that linked Europe to Asia by sea in the fifteenth century, this sprawling network collapsed almost overnight. There was no longer any need for the Silk Road and cities that had been inexorably linked to the rest of the world suddenly became cut off, isolated and bankrupt.

Turkmenistan is a country in South-Central Asia with a population of about 5 million, and an area around half a million square kilometres, or almost the size of Spain. Neighbouring countries are Iran and Afghanistan to the South, and Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to the North. It has a coast on the Caspian Sea, but is otherwise landlocked. Nearly 80% of the country is considered part of the Karakum Desert.

The traditional life of the Turkmen is that of nomadic shepherds, though some have been settled in towns for centuries. The country is known for its fine carpets (one is even featured in its flag) and horses. Turkmenistan is a fairly poor and underdeveloped country, even though billions have been spent on modernization in Ashgabat, Turkmenbashi, and many other cities in post Soviet times. While there has been much construction in Ashgabat, most of the downtown high rises appear empty. And also, the country has extensive oil and gas reserves being developed, with recently opened pipelines to China, Iran, and soon Azerbaijan.

Uzbekistan is within the South-Central Asian Union and has borders with other member states of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. It is doubly landlocked, but includes the southern shoreline of the Aral Sea.

Religious buildings in Uzbekistan
============================

The Friday Mosque (Masjid-i Juma) is located in the town. It had a spacious courtyard with a surrounding gallery and a maqbara (screened-off enclosure) in the main axis. A typical example is the Kalan Mosque at Bukhara.

The Oratory Mosque (Namazgah) is situated outside of the town. Prayers at two important Muslim festivals were conducted in public. The worshippers gathered in an open space in front of the building where the minbar (imam's pulpit) stood.

The Neighbourhood Mosque was smaller in size and consisted of a covered hall with the mihrab and an exterior gallery with columns. They were built from donations of the inhabitants of the neighbourhood and are often richly decorated. An example of this type is the Baland (Boland) Mosque at Bukhara.

The Madrasa is an institition for higher education of ulama (Islamic scholars). The madrasa has a courtyard with two or four aywand (arched portals) on the axes which were used as classrooms in the summer, a row of cells on one or two floors, darskhana (lecture rooms) in two or four corners and a mosque for daily prayer. The main facade has a high portal with two or four minaret-like towers at the corners of the building. Madrasas from the 16th and 17th cent. which have been preserved are Madar-Khan, Abdullah Khan, Kukaldash, Nadir Devan Begi and Abdul Aziz Khan at Bukhara, Sher-Dor and Tilla-Kari at Samarkand, Kukaldash and Baraq Khan in Tashkent, Said Ataliq at Denau and Mir Rajab Dotha at Kanibadam. Madrasas built in the 18th and 19th cent. include Narbuta Bi at Kokand, Qutlugh Murad Inaq, Khojamberdybii, Khoja Moharram, Musa Tura and Allah-Quli Khan in Khiva.

The Khanaqah was originally a guest house for travelling Sufis near the residence of their pir (spiritual masters). Under the Timurids they became meeting places of the followers of a Sufi order, attended by representatives of the ruling elite and often a zikr-khana (room for exposition and Sufi rites) was added. Examples of khanaqas from the 16th and 17th cent include Zaynuddin, Fayzabad, Bahaudin and Nadi Divan-Begi at Bukhara, Mulla Mir near Ramitan, Qasim Shaiykh at Karmana and Imam Bahra near Khatirchi.

Memorial buildings were erected in the 14th and 15th cent for Temur and his family, e.g. Gur-Amir and Shah-i Zinda at Samarkand and at Shakrizabs. In the 16th and 17th cent. fewer mausoleums were built. An example from this period is the Qafal Shashi Mausoleum in Tashkent. Monumental buildings were often erected near holy tombs. At Bukhara a monumental kanaqah was built near the founder of the Naqshbandi order, Bahauddein and at Char Bakr, the family necropolis of the powerful Juybari shaykhs. From the 16th cent. onwards mauseoleums for rulers were no longer built. The rulers were interred in madrasas, the Shaybanids of Samarkand in the Abu Said Mausoleum on the Registan, Ubaydullah Khan from Bukhara in the Mir-i Arab Madrasa and Abdul Aziz Khan in the Abdul Aziz Madrasa.
