129 Jeanette: The Mother of Modern Arctic Exploration

Buy us a coffee: [Chris]( / [Henry](

Polar Newsreel
As the planet continues to heat up, [a third of all Antarctic ice shelves risk to collapse]( a new study founds. At the same time, Russia orchestrates a complex Arctic military exercise, letting [three nuclear submarines surfacing simultaneously through the ice close to the North Pole]( It remains to be seen whether this should underpin [Russia’s new, extended claim for a larger piece of the Arctic]( In Iceland, however, the ongoing volcanic eruption draws a lot of tourism and brings a large number of [contenders for this year’s Darwin Award](

The Mother of Modern Arctic Exploration
Thanks to [Mia Bennett and Antoine Vanner]( today’s episode looks into the question how one one ill-fated expedition could impact so many future expeditions in the Arctic.

Following a long-standing [theory of an ice-free North Pole]( and at a time when the [United States just recently bought Alaska]( and started to wonder what lies beyond their new northern-most territory, [James Gordon Bennett Jr.]( the publisher of the most popular and profitable daily newspaper of the time, [The New York Herald]( set up the [USS Jeannette]( to sail up the Bering Strait, following the hypothesised temperate ocean current, the [Kuro Siwo]( all the way to the North Pole.

Shortly after the expedition, led by US Navy Lieutenant Commander [George Washington De Long]( entered the Chukchi sea they charted a new group of Islands north of the [New Siberian Islands]( but very soon got caught in ice and [locked up for the next 21 months]( After almost two years in the ice, the pressure of the [ice crushes the Jeannette and the ship sinks]( The 33 men make their way towards the Lena Delta not without carrying [the comprehensive ship’s log containing a number of valuable information](

And it’s the ship’s log that [make the biggest treasure]( of that failed expedition. [Those records]( along with similar data housed in many other archives, are being fed into the [20th Century Reanalysis]( a sophisticated weather reconstruction database developed by the [National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration]( that allows scientists to characterise floods, droughts, storms, and other extreme events from history - and use the violent weather of the past to understand the present.

Poverty in Arkansas.

10 Arkansas small towns with the worst poverty.
10 Poorest towns in Arkansas.

Today we are going to take a look at Arkansas and the mess that it is.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national poverty rate was 11.8% percent or 38.1 million Americans in 2018. These states have the highest percentages of poverty in the country: Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, District of Colombia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and the territory of Puerto Rico.

So why are we starting with Arkansas? Last month I got an email from a guy named Glen in Little Rock who said
I best not put Arkansas in my mouth again. He said he’d find me and pull me out of my electric car and crush my head.
I replied: Dude how did you watch my video, you are using AOL dial-up service.
He replied. What’s wrong with that.
I replied “Nothing if it were 1997.
He never replied again. So, in Glen's honor, I am putting Arkansas back in my mouth and we are going to look at the poorest towns in Arkansas.
Thanks for checking out the channel. I hope you enjoyed today's video. If there is a state, city or town you'd like us to do a video about let us know in the comment section.

Feldkirch Vorarlberg ???????? Austria

#feldkirch #vorarlberg
There where I was born,my birthplace .Feldkirch.

Feldkirch is a medieval town in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg, bordering on Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It is the administrative centre of the Feldkirch district. After Dornbirn, it is the second most populous town in Vorarlberg. The westernmost point in Austria lies in Feldkirch on the river Rhine, at the tripoint between Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
This beautiful medieval town, which remains well preserved to this day, was mentioned as a city for the first time in 1218, after Count Hugo von Montfort built the Schattenburg, a castle which still is the major landmark of Feldkirch. Other sights in the town include the Gothic-style cathedral of St. Nikolaus. Feldkirch was the birthplace of Rheticus, and is currently the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Feldkirch. From 1651 to 1773 and from 1856 to 1979, Feldkirch was the home of the Jesuit school Stella Matutina.

March 1799 saw two clashes between the forces of the First French Republic and the Habsburg monarchy. On the 7th, Nicolas Oudinot, with 9,000 French soldiers, defeated Friedrich Freiherr von Hotze and his 6,000 Austrians. The Battle of Feldkirch occurred on 23 March, when André Masséna and 12,000 Frenchmen were beaten by Franjo Jelačić and a force of 5,500 Austrians.
Feldkirch has had its own local bus network since 1993. It currently consists of eight lines, including buses which run to the north of neighbouring Liechtenstein. The bus system cooperates with Vorarlberg's regional bus system. The Feldkirch railway station lies on the main railway line through the Vorarlberg, with inter-city services to Zurich and Vienna. There are also local international trains to Buchs via Liechtenstein on the Feldkirch–Buchs railway.
Companies
The following companies and service organizations are based in Feldkirch:

Bachmann Electronic
Vorarlberg Milch
Lingenhöle Technologie
Stadtwerke Feldkirch
KSW Tankstellen- und Industrieanlagenbau
Gebäudereinigung Bauer
Landeskrankenhaus Feldkirch

James Joyce and Feldkirch
The Irish writer James Joyce is inextricably linked to Feldkirch. In World War II, Joyce was mistaken for a spy at the border check in Feldkirch in 1915 and almost arrested. Thanks to influential friends, he was regarded as a friendly foreigner. The Irishman saw this event at the Feldkirch train station as fateful. Subsequently, it influenced his most important work. In the summer of 1932, the friendship with the publisher couple Maria and Eugene Jolas brought the writer back to Feldkirch, where he stayed for several weeks at the Hotel Löwen and worked on Finnegans Wake (published 1939). During this stay, Joyce himself said that Ulysses (1922) was inextricably linked to Feldkirch: Over there, on those tracks, the fate of 'Ulysses' was decided in 1915.

7 East African Presidents With Their Statehouses | Kenya vs Uganda vs Tanzania vs Rwanda

Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) form the East African Community. The presidents of these countries live in well protected residences called State houses or Flag houses or Presidential palaces.
This video contains a list of the seven east African presidents and their state houses.
Some of these statehouses such as the State house of Kenya, currently occupied by the newly elected president of Kenya, President William Ruto, were Built by the colonialists during the colonial era. However some of them are still new or under construction like the Chamwino state house in Dodoma that was recently completed. The construction of the Chamwino statehouse was necessitated by the shifting of the Tanzania's capital from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma. The State house is expected to be Opened by the Current president of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Abandoned West Penn Railway Trolley , Trolley Park & PA Bridge Date Plate History In 6 Mins!

All in one take! Sorry for the low tech presentation but there is tons of information so pay attention! The West Penn Railway Street Car system closed down for good in 1952. Some areas where it ran pretty much look as they did. I am showing you the corner of Brown Ave and Harrison Ave (Rt 130) Jeannette PA, on it's way to Greensburg. This section of right of way sat abandoned until the Dept of Highways figured out they could lay a 4 lane highway from Jeannette to Downtown Greensburg, running parallel to the Lincoln Highway US 30. This line stopped at one of the many trolley parks that existed around Western PA (Kennywood, Luna, West View, Rainbow Gardens, to name a few)..This one was Oakford Park. See Google Images for photos. The park was abandoned years ago, but the big public pool survived until the 1980s until liability insurance killed it for good. Part 2--an obsession of mine is understanding the origins of the Pennsylvania Dept of Highways, and their standardized bridge building on State and US Routes. These bridges most likely will be all but dissappeared in the next 10 years, as salt and heavy traffic has finally taken their toll. What is fun is finding all the date plates that were placed on the various bridges, starting in 1918, and they were dated all the way up to 1953. More fun than spotting license plates... Through my travels over the past 4 years I have photographed all years except the following (no bridges built during wwII for the most part) I need: 1922, 1926,1927, 1931, 1939, 1949, 1951, and 1952 to complete my photos...Fans...help me find the rest...the bridge design is very standard and easy to spot. email me photos of your findings to qman49@juno.com Visit us at for more photos and insight on PA pre cast road bridge construction. Happy Geekdom!!!

Mürzzuschlag in der Steiermark Östereich-Styria Austria 7 August 2020

#Styria #Austria
History
The settlement in the Duchy of Styria was first documented in 1227. The minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein in his 1265 poem Frauendienst mentioned Murzuslage, which he passed on his journey from Venice to Vienna. In 1360 the Habsburg duke Rudolf IV confirmed the inhabitants' privilege of iron production, competing with the town of Leoben.

In 1854 the Semmering railway opened, by which the Austrian Southern Railway company provided direct access to Vienna, largely promoting the local economy. The Bleckmann steel mill was founded in 1862, it is today part of Böhler-Uddeholm. A railway museum exhibits a collection of steam locomotives, associated equipment and rolling stock.

In the late 19th century, the mountainous Semmering area was the site of the first alpine skiing attempts in Central Europe, which made it one of the oldest ski resorts of Austria, documented by the world's largest skiing and winter sports museum. Mürzzuschlag received town privileges in 1923.

1931 Workers' Olympiad
On February 5–8, 1931 the second winter Workers' Olympiad organised by the Socialist Workers' Sport International was held in the town. The games were larger (both in number of participants and spectators) than the 1932 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, New York, United States.

Scott M.'s Review on The Dyrt:

▶︎ One of my favorites
Super simple campground with only a few sites and two walk in sites. The walk in sites are perfect! The flights were a bit bad but nothing huge. Several sites are reservable and others are first come first serve. Watching the storms come in across the lake was well worth it!

Vienna,Austria

Vienna is the federal capital, largest city and one of nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primate city, with a population of about 1.9 million (2.6 million within the metropolitan area, nearly one third of the country's population, and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, the city had 2 million inhabitants.[13] Today, it has the second largest number of German speakers after Berlin. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants.[citation needed] In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In July 2017 it was moved to the list of World Heritage in Danger.

Apart from being regarded as the City of Music because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be The City of Dreams because it was home to the world's first psychoanalyst – Sigmund Freud. The city's roots lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval and Baroque city, and then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is well known for having played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, and the late-19th-century Ringstraße lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.

Vienna is known for its high quality of life. In a 2005 study of 127 world cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver and San Francisco) for the world's most liveable cities. Between 2011 and 2015, Vienna was ranked second, behind Melbourne. In 2018, it replaced Melbourne as the number one spot. For ten consecutive years (2009–2019), the human-resource-consulting firm Mercer ranked Vienna first in its annual Quality of Living survey of hundreds of cities around the world.Monocle's 2015 Quality of Life Survey ranked Vienna second on a list of the top 25 cities in the world to make a base within.

The UN-Habitat classified Vienna as the most prosperous city in the world in 2012/2013. The city was ranked 1st globally for its culture of innovation in 2007 and 2008, and sixth globally (out of 256 cities) in the 2014 Innovation Cities Index, which analyzed 162 indicators in covering three areas: culture, infrastructure, and markets.] Vienna regularly hosts urban planning conferences and is often used as a case study by urban planners.
Between 2005 and 2010, Vienna was the world's number-one destination for international congresses and conventions. It attracts over 6.8 million tourists a year.
