10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Godalming Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Surrey, and around 35 miles southwest of central London, is the town of Godalming (pronunciation note: the emphasis is on the first syllable i.e. GOD-al-ming).

The name 'Godalming' derives from 'Godhelms Ingus', meaning 'people of Godhelm', where Godhelm was presumably a Saxon chieftain. One of its first recorded mentions dates back to 899 AD in Alfred the Great's will, where he gifted Godalming and neighbouring Guildford to his nephew Æthelwold. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Godelminge'.

At the heart of the town is St Peter and St Paul's Church, whose distinctive spire can be seen for miles. It was built in the 12th century on the site of an older Saxon church from the 9th century or earlier. The church which stands today is Grade I listed.

In 1300 Godalming was granted its first charter by Edward I to hold a weekly market and an annual fair. Industries in the town over the centuries have included wool, leather tanning and paper-making. Its geographical location roughly halfway between London and Portsmouth made it a popular coaching stop during the era of the horse-drawn carriage. As such, a number of former coaching inns can be seen around the town. Portsmouth-born Charles Dickens references the town in Nicholas Nickleby, where he writes, in relation to two characters walking from London to Portsmouth, To Godalming they came at last, and here they bargained for two humble beds, and slept soundly.

In 1764 Godalming received a direct route to London via the waterways as the Wey Navigation was extended south. This was a project which started in 1651 where the River Wey was widened to make it navigable for commercial traffic, initially connecting London to Guildford via Woking.

In 1849 the railway arrived in Godalming. The current station dates from 1859 and is situated on the Portsmouth Direct Line which runs between Woking and Portsmouth Harbour. This in turn connects to the South Western Main Line, which gives Godalming a direct route to London Waterloo Station in under an hour.

Just north of the town centre is the Phillips Memorial Park, seen at the end of the walk. This is named after Jack Phillips from the neighbouring village of Farncombe. After working at Godalming post office, Phillips went on to become a radio operator on the RMS Titanic. After it struck an iceberg he remained at his post, and was one of the first people to use the international emergency call sign, SOS. His last message was sent three minutes before the ship sank. Phillips did not survive.

Author Aldous Huxley was born in Godalming. Huxley would go on to write the seminal novel Brave New World between 1931 and 1932. Interestingly enough, Huxley taught French to fellow dystopian future novelist George Orwell at Eton College, albeit briefly.

Rock band Genesis formed at Charterhouse School in Godalming in 1967.

Iver Heath | Buckinghamshire | England

#iverheath #Buckinghamshire

Recorded on 19-Feb-2021 (just few minutes before uploaded)

Iver  is a large civil parish in Buckinghamshire, England. In addition to the central clustered village, the parish includes the residential neighbourhoods of Iver Heath and Richings Park.

In the Domesday Book of 1086 the whole area was recorded as Evreham or homestead by the brow of a hill and it was in the possession of a man called Robert Doiley.

In 1351 the area was granted a Royal charter to hold a weekly market. This charter was confirmed 110 years later in 1461.
Iver

Iver village on the Uxbridge to Langley road has a pre-Domesday foundation and Neolithic pottery fragments and other artefacts have been discovered. The village church has shards of a Saxon window, and elements dating from the 15th century, 16th century and 17th century can be seen. The village has numerous houses from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Iver Heath is the location of Heatherden Hall, a Victorian estate with spectacular grounds. It was purchased by Lt. Col. Grant Morden, a Canadian financier, who transformed the mansion by adding a huge ballroom and Turkish bath. During the 1930s it became a retreat and private meeting place for politicians and diplomats. The agreement to form the Irish Free State was signed at Heatherden Hall. The Church of St Margaret was built in 1862. Iver Heath itself is centred on a triangle of roads. The village post office is on the Slough Road to the south, while a parade of shops used to be found along Church Road to the north. Slough Road and Church Road are connected by Bangors Road North to the east.

Memorial Gardens Stoke Poges Walking Tour

The Memorial Gardens have been designed and maintained in a fashion for which there is no building, structures or monuments of any kind likely to remind one of a cemetery.

The parkland landscape which originally formed part of Stoke Park was laid out by Capability Brown and Repton. Much of the area survived until 1909 when the golf course opened.

Sir Noel Mobbs, Lord of the Manor of Stoke Poges, acquired the twenty acres of land to the south of the church in order to preserve the tranquil and rural setting of St Giles’ church, made famous by Gray’s poem ‘Elegy in a Country Churchyard’ and to have the land as a Memorial Garden, to be a ‘living memorial to the dead and of solace to the bereaved’. The gardens were opened on 25 May 1935 and their 80th anniversary was commemorated in 2015. The gardens are maintained and managed by South Bucks District Council.

The Memorial Gardens were designed by Edward White, a partner of Milner, White and Son, a leading landscape architect firm of the day. The Gardens were to contain no buildings nor monuments as in a cemetery, but were designed on a generous scale as a complete garden with small gardens and family plots. It was felt that the general appearance of the Gardens should offer satisfactory unity. There were and continue to be in excess of 500 individual family gated gardens. The gardens were refurbished in October 2001 with the contract focusing on the main structure and the formal parts of the gardens, including replanting using the limited plants used by Edward White in his gardens.

The Secretive River Alderbourne - Part 2.

The Secretive River Alderbourne - Part 2.

Starting in Iver Heath Village Centre, we find a little steam which is a tributary of the River Alderbourne. After walking along an abandoned section of road we find the River Alderbourne near the M25.

The most unusual find of this video was a very low bridge on a public footpath which carries the M25 over the footpath and the River Colne Brook.

After almost crossing the River Colne in to Uxbridge, London Borough of Hillingdon we eventually finish up in the Colne Brook as the River Alderbourne confluence is on private land.
